YES! They NEEDED to put the Earth opening in the first cut. It clearly shows the motivation of the humans and their desperation to mine Pandora. In the normal version, we are told it is just money that they are after. But, in the script, Earth is dying and Pandora is a paradise of life to be exploited for our survival. So, this extended cut is going to make it into what Cameron intended from the start and provide the VERY important perspective of the humans simply trying to save their planet.
