@rocktupac2132 unm, yes they did run with armor and shield. it's called the hoplite run, the tactic spartans used againts xerxes' mobile archers, the hoplite tun was the tactic that the persians feared the most coz that era it was next to impossible, you just can't sprint long distances with 70lbs on you, which the spartans did.
@vhanhanzz lols, i feel like asking that bolt guy, (forgot his name, the one who broke the world record at the last olympic for running) to wear the actual hoplite armour and sprint, LOL, i wish i can too,
and i heard they sprint for 100yrds and some even ran a marathon in hoplite armour and they call it hoplithon, hahas.
It would be nice to see a macedonian sarrissa phalanx doing drill and re-enacting.
and it's interesting that he doesnt cover how to advance when you are about to engage the enemy, a sort of shuffle of the feet, so left goes forward, right comes to meet it in stance, left forward right to meet it etc.
wasnt hoplites supossed to be protecting their friend at the left with their shields and with right hand holding the spear? that is why discipline and unity in this phalanx type formation were vital, if the formation was broken then all the formation was in peril of being totally anihilated
I know what it is. What I said that in the testudo, each soldier in the front row portected the one to the left. In the phalanx formation each soldier portected himself.
No, testudo, or tortoise, was used to defelct incoming arrows. the central trrops would hold the shield over their heads, the ones in front kept their's in front, the ones on the flanks faced outward. all the shields interlocked creating a roof or shell.
the phalanx of greece used 3-4 foot shields that when held in close formation interlocked and protected not only the one carrying the shield, but part of the man to his left.
you don't have any idea what you are talking about are you? because a hoplite is a heavy armoured Greek soldier and spartans are people from the ancient greek state sparta. And tell me what you think is gay at soldiers who carry 70 pounds of armour and are really effective.
The two girls on the right got mixed up the Hoplite day with the Legionaire day and got a rectangular shield - Greeks used round shields, U shaped shields 8-shaped shields but never rectangular or triangular.
@Hoplitikon EXACTLY!!!! im one of those teens that love ancient history. :p started reading books about Ancient greece and persia at age 6 :p. I still read some of those books

There's a gondor shield there and a upside down spartan. They would have no chance against the sarissas, they do look like welsh militia! ;P

No that's the Romans.
tFighterPilot 2 years ago
romans did not use spears, they used pillums and short swords and a legion formation, not a phalanx formation
LXMGN 2 years ago
But in the Roman formation called Testudo each soldier protected the one to the left.
tFighterPilot 2 years ago
@tFighterPilot no testudo was where the alll formed a turtle of shields to protect against arrows.
