One of the best. Fast, smooth, tasty development of rhythm patterns, and legally blind. And a consummate pro. So much more class, style, and rhythm than these metalhead sterile sounding death maniacs of today.
@smithbonz I didn't know music was a competition, metal is a heavy and aggressive genre that is right for a place and time, while jazz is more relaxed and flowing which also has its own right place and time. And besides, metal is played in such a strict form because of the speed that there is little room for improve, and theres many drummers that play both.
@goodnamepending Prepare to get swamped by people who don't have the slightest clue what subjectivity and context are... It's a youtube jazz video. Nothing this tasty as possible at extreme tempos anyway, and that's obvious. How people don't realize how this is apples and oranges is beyond me, but hey... I love both anyway
mine too. what an artist. his interpretation is beautiful. wonderful sax, piano and bass as well. stunning rendition. well done Conan. you'd never never see this on some bullshit like Johnathan Ross here in UK. wonderful. RIP JM and thanks for this posr.
"Oh dropped my stick, keep hitting the cymbal keep hitting the cymbal, nope that's not it, Keep hitting the cymbal keep hitting the cymbal, nope that's not it either, keep hitting the cymbal keep hitting the cymbal, oh got it. ONE!!!!" fucking great recovery.
What I love about Joe Morello is that he has maybe a dozen, probably more versions of Take Five solos on youtube - and they are nearly all completely different. Lots of drummers, even some of the real greats, played the same solos for decades - or else they built the solo up from well learned and rehearsed sections, even if the order changed. Even Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson were sometimes guilty of this. Joe constantly renewed his approach to this song, right up to his last performance.
I had the honor, as a kid, to take drum lessons from Joe Sefcik, Joe Morello's first drum teacher. Joe S said Joe M was virtually blind, w coke bottle glasses and the fastest finger control he's ever seen. On Sat morns, my lesson followed Ron Hurst, who is currently drummer of steppenwolf, and was Chuck Berry's drummer at 18 years old. Old Joe S knew how to teach.
Not the prettiest recovery but he still kept time with one stick and looking for another one...skill...and still rockin those aviators! We miss u Joe!!!
I think Joe was visually impaired but not completely blind, folks. I mean clearly in the video he's looking right at the stick he dropped to move it out of the way and is looking at each mallet he pulls out. Remember, blindness doesn't mean completely without sight.
I think, THIS is a really cool and groovy drumsolo ...not those high-speed-metal-doublebass drumsolo without any groove he plays an evil speed on the bassdrum without a doublebass, he NEVER drops the beat ... he gives everything to that music what it's needed ...
@stagepark u do understand that if a metal drummer did a solo like this it would only sound awkward? completely different styles...its not that they cannot do it...
@stagepark Actually he has a double base pedal, and u hear it at 3:05 and if you don't believe me he talks abouts a double base pedal in drum method 2
Can't believe when drops the sticks, he has to find another on one hand......while keeping the rhythm on the other! Not to mention that he's blind as well. Omg, that's amazing. RIP Mr. Joe Morello
I studied with Joe for Five years and his lessons were from 1 hour to as long as 5 hours. He never charged me,ever!! He truly cared that I got better and showed me techniques not in any book. Although Joe wrote many books, he kept many, many things just for himself and his students. He had me practice "Stick Control" by George Stone and I had to memorize page five. He then had me play exercise #1 with my hands and #1 thru 24 with my feet at the same time. love you , Joe!! Utube "Duncan Branom"
For those not aware, Joe Morello was blind. Not only did he grab three sticks and work out what they were while keeping the beat, he did so out of necessity by TOUCH.
i have seen this man play on a lot of different videos, always amazing and so cool.I Love the way in almost half of them he pushes his glasses back on his nose and plays a whole solo with one hand. Miss you Joe. You were great.
Love the stick drop and he's playin' like it's nothing -even gets a little smirk on his face like "wtf is this, a joke" but he NEVER drops the beat. You are missed Joe...
This man made music and was known for his musicality drumming.............unlike Rich, who was an attack drummer. One had a very aggressive snare approach, while the other was much more mellow and fluent across the drum set. Both were geniuses and none can argue with their drum solos, but they were two very different bears that inhabited the same woods.
@JamesQuall77 no bush, goldwater, nixon, reagan, westmorlen, haig, thatcher, marcos, atilla the hun, mao, papa doc,somosa,helms,thurmond..i REALLY approve of this video.
Hell yeah, all drummers drop stick..part of the game..additionally, really good players use a super relaxed grip which contributes to the occasional drop.
I saw Rush a year ago at the Boston Garden. I brought my binoculars to watch Neal Peart play his solo and guess what?- he dropped a stick too. When it happens, it is embarrassing, but it does happen to everyone. There is a video on youtube of Ian Paice playing with Deep Purple and a stick goes flying.
@wmjoca Sometimes we break the tip off a stick and need to let it go for a fresh one; sometimes we accidentally hit a stick out of our hand. It happens. We're not gods and certainly not perfect. It's just life. Even the secretary of the president of the U.S. probably needs to correct the odd mistake in typing.
Morello spells Tranquillo he reminds me of Camel Joe on the drums.
Cool calm free flowing and in control.
His protoge Gottlieb is the same Love the way Danny plays his quick jazz sticking on the ride is so elegant. the stick tip does make a difference but its a touch. Erskine is the same the ballet elegence on the ride with that open bop sound.
Morello was always known for mastering random sticking techniques, I'm not suprised to to see him do Buddy Rich's hihat trick. I'm not sure Rich invented it but it was Rich's go to gimick on the hats.
He was really on the edge here , even at such an advanced age....going for so much and taking risks in the solo....he got at some marvelous ideas too....i wonder what we will be doing at 80...God Bless Joe Morello. : )
In my opinion, simply the best. As a young teenager I saw my "idol" Gene Krupa in Detroit, had a chance to visit with him, and he was incredible. But as I grew older, I discovered the real art of drumming in Joe Morello. A "musical technician" extraodinaire. God bless you, Joe.
After dropping a stick like that on national television, most drummers would buckle from embarrassment after picking up a new stick... let alone 2 mallets before hand and STILL holding it down!
Lovely guy, and possibly the most musical drummer of his generation. I saw him at the farewell concert of the Brubeck Quartet in London MANY years ago...what a fabulous and emotional occasion! A unique talent. We will miss you Joe...
Look at the bass player when he dropped the stick, he was like "no, he couldn't possibly come back after that D: .... wait o.O ..... AH HE DID IT! xD" amazing! Joe Morello, R.I.P.
@castlehilldude And I read that he's blind. You could almost suspect that when he grabbed the wrong stick he could tell by it's weight and feel alone. 'Such a brilliant recovery you wonder if it was just meant to have been that way...?
Morello plays better with one stick than 99.5% of drummers play with two sticks. And, don't tell me that Buddy Rich or Steve Gadd or any other percussive genius never dropped a stick - it happens!
I have read some of the comments about him dropping the stick but, if you listen carefully he did not miss a beat. He was playing so well and so fast the stick jumped out of his hand. THATS WHAT YOU CALL SKILLS!!!! TOTALLY AMAZING!!
Sticks drop. That's life. Joe is nearly blind from what I know. Also traditional grip makes it easy to drop, when you're moving around the kit. Sorry to hear of Joe's passing this year. He was a musician on the drums, besides a great technician. He must have been 67 at this time.
Not many people are still performing at age 70 and appearing on TV and at concerts around the world, if you get my drift, all of you critics. Joe continued to teach and perform into his 80s and will be missed.
Now, I'm going to make a comment about him dropping the stick. Watch it again. Yep, he drops a stick - but just listen to that right foot while he's searching for another stick. Simply amazing. RIP Joe
What drummer hasnt dropped their drumstick? That means your going for it. RIP Joe the world is a better place for having had you in it. Not many people get to make a dent in the universe. You made a hole in it.
The sound he creates is beautiful! If your technique/mechanics is solid age doesn't seem to matter. He sounded better when he was searching for a stick than most drummers will in a life time.
Found out this in the DFO forum by someone who knew Joe... "Great clip with Ralph Lalama(T), Greg Kogan(p) and Gary Mazzaroppi(B)...Max Weinberg was instrumental in getting him on the show...After the appearance, I asked Joe about the dropped stick toward the end of the solo and he told me that someone had moved his HH out out its usual position, so he slightly miscalculated where it was...Due to his vision issues, he had to have all his gear set up within very tight tolerances. Jim
Joe is one of the greatest drummers that ever drew breath. There aren't many. He's in my top four. Buddy, Elvin, Tony, and Joe. As far as the stick. Any drummer who has ever played the drums more than once has done the same thing including me. It's not the stick that's important, but what you do when it happens. He did great. Also, I've have yet to hear anything top "Far More Drums".
Ralph Lalama on tenor sax. Nice! And regarding the stick dropping, there is a video here on YouTube of the old Tonight Show band, where Ed Shaugnessey obviously drops a stick during the performance. Everyone drops sticks (God knows I have) but the difference between a hack drummer and an artist is how well the drummer copes with the loss of the stick. Both Joe, and Ed on the other video, handle it gracefully. If you were only listening, you probably wouldn't know a stick was dropped.
i bet he was beating himself up backstage. so what joe?! you dropped a stick, but you dropping a stick is more graceful that any of us being on 20 drum magazine covers.
Please note that Joe was legally blind, and still could get around his kit as you see here. Joe Morello showed the world that the drums can be as musical and complex as any instrument. Thank you, Mr. Morello for all you gave us.
You also must remember that Joe's eyesight by this time had deteriorated to the point where he had almost no vision. A marvelous performance, and he will always be one of my favorite drummers.
Hacer sonar algo con todo y error, carajo ahora a contar la cantidad de veces que toco la nota perfectamente con la técnica adecuada. Great and gorgeous job¡¡ :D.
Great Solo, thanks for Posting. Love his Snare Sound here. Saxplayer Hairdo is a Plus!

I was fortunate enough to study with one of his teachers Asher G. Zlotnik Ph. D. Dr. Z told how he taught Joe Morello some stuff. I was in awe.
