i failed my pft test and was wondering why? they are making me go again because the machine isnt the best i guess. is it possible i could have asthma and not even know it? thanks
@JasonCGreene Watch our other spirometry video to see if it answers your question. Look under our video catalogue and it is called "Ask the Doctor: Spirometry".
Spirometry is the basic lung function test, performed by tens of thousands of patients every year. Below age 40, its value is for measuring the degree of asthma control in patients known to have asthma. It is used to detect (or to rule-out) COPD in cigarette smokers over age 40. This video was taken during an event designed to increase awareness of COPD -- and thus enhance the $1 billion dollar annual profits of the companies who make COPD inhalers.
Is there any way to improve on one of these, I barely failed on and NEED to pass it. I have no trouble with asthma. I can run a 5min mile and ran 16miles yesterday. Im fit as hell, but I need to pass it to become a Marine aviator. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I would have to disagree with tweacle100. This procedure is performed on many patients in the ICU who are sitting up in bed and cant stand. Sure the values may vary a little but it is by a very insignificant amount. Sitting would be my preferred position for performing this type of procedure, mainly to protect the patient if they pass out.

Spirometry is one of the most common pulmonary function tests., it is used to asses conditions like asthma, fibrosis, and other pulmonary diseases. It Measures the amount and the speed of air that can me exhaled and inhaled, according to the patients age, height, etc, we may be able to interpret the results of this test. @lovedog49507 If we exhaled Carbon Monoxide, we'd all die.
