But it does it's job, i.e. a focal point of the song that the crowd can go wild at. And when this solo is played live, the crowd can't get enough. So much better than a slow, 2 minute long solo that the crowd can go "Oh yeah, that was quite nice" at.

Bellamy is definately one of the best guitarists of this era. I have friends that hate Muse but admit that Bellamy is brilliant.

that's really not that uncommon. many great guitar players taught themselves how to play; and you don't have to learn the notes; it's all in playing by ear, learning by listening how the notes work and sound together

Yeah there are definitely more intricate solos out there from many other bands - most experienced guitarists can play a more complicated solo than this one, but i've yet to find a guitarist who can write a song as well as Matt Bellamy can! Plus the effects make up for the lack of shredding, where else do you get this kind of awesome sound? :P

@rmarino4471, I agree with much of what you have said but being the greatest doesn't always mean playing the fastest or something of that nature. I agree that Matt isn't the greatest guitarist ever, and he himself would clearly admit that too, but he does put a lot of passion into his work that is hard to find these days. He doesn't always play insanely fast, but he always plays with passion. That's what makes him great, not the greatest but great nonetheless.
