How fun! This is going to make it so much easier to teach to our kids (we're converting). After you guys said the first portion, where do you pic up at? I've been trying to figure it out, but since I'm new at all this, I can't make out what you're saying because of all the noise. Cute!
Banging also brings an element of a play and cute mischief when done by young people; not talking about it (the banging) being a centuries long tradition
Banging on the table is a very naturral human move when singing....there's a rhytm and a tempo to a song, and it's mainted and enforced with drumming no the table
I have one question and one comment: Is there any significance to the banging the hands on the tables? On Purim it is done to blot out the name of Haman. Why do it during the Birkat Hamazon? Or is it just for fun?
Im a new member at NFTY and we do this at every meal. i am determined to learn it! (: i almost went to harlam too... i shouldve gone just to learn this . haha.
My synagogue, Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos, California, sings this with almost the same lyrics and melody! When we do in this on the retreats, people actually have to lift stuff off the table to make sure it doesn't spill from the strength with which we pound the tables!!
i went to a jewish camp for 5 summers and we too sang this after every meal. even though the tune was a little different we still did the banging of the table! good times! :)
I am an AnaBaptist Christian, and I keep coming back to this video and sharing it with others. Love it! A friend let me borrow and read their bencher a while back, and I was really struck with the beauty of it all.
We goyim have a lot to learn. May you be strong and patient to teach!
its amazing, no matter the jewish camp, its always the same, eh? (except if we hit the tables during the prayer we would have to start over from the beginning...most stressing on shabbat for sure)
Teach me how to pray for food , i'm hungry
