they changed it into a church because of the times were livin in,they might have got abit of backlash if it was a mosque :) but it is based on the real ac-130 mission

whats hilarious about this mission in COD4, is that it taken directly from an AC-130 mission to kill Taliban who were hiding in a mosque. If you search AC-130 on youtube, its one of the first results to watch.

Its amazing because that square building next to the mosque was bombed IRL, and it didnt damage the Mosque, which is a tribute to how amazing our AC-130 operators are.
