@DualAxer : A double grip is not historically accurate and decreases maneuverability with the shield. Viking style of shield combat was meant to deflect blows, not absorb them like a heavier Greek shield.

The dish is harder to go through than the wood, so no, it makes it harder for the shield to be penetrated. The hole and dish is needed to accommodate a center style grip.

a comomn viking shield wld be 3ft diameter and plus the wood you are using has many knots and holes

you can see the flaw in your shield? the bolts that hold on the bowl will end up gowging in to your arm in and fore is applyed to it; it is a great prop but if you my get hurt if you use it.

@singful have used the shield a few times cant say the bolts caused me any harm. rivets are another option...

Making the grain go horizontally to the handle usualy makes it last longer.
