  • Do you run MythTV backend as a VM?

  • @fastjp72 No. My MythTV box doesn't have IOMMU on the motherboard, which would be necessary to access my video capture card (via PCI passthrough). Even if it did, I don't think VMs make much sense in applications that need to talk to special hardware (like a fancy video card for HD playback) or disk-intensive apps (like MythTV's commercial flagging and atrocious database update). Pretty much all my other servers do, though, including my Asterisk PBX.

  • @servicescloud Thanks! The songs are Naughty Hula Eyes, by Andy Iona And His Islanders, and Cocaine, by Dick Justice. Both songs are in the public domain.

  • Hello dereks443,

Thank you so much for the video. It is great. I am currently working on a project where I want to use the most stable open source/free software solution virtualization. I has been thinking on deploying KVM + Libvirt but that command line vm-shell look even better for management. If you can shoot me a response with what will be the basic you recommend here I use Debian Linux not need all the mouse fire or even a gnome or kde. I look forward to your response. Thank you!!

  • @jairzhino I'm sorry to say I haven't had to time to maintain or promote vm-shell in the last few months. I'm hoping to come back to this project in a few months and launch an OSS project for it (and support services).

I presently use KVM for all my server VMs, and VirtualBox for desktop GUI app VMs. I have several KVM machines (on Ubuntu 8.10, 9.04, and 9.10) and they have been extremely stable. I use Ubuntu for everything: workstations, servers, MythTV, kid's machines, etc.
