Great, but very under-rated song. Joe Egan (half of Stealer's Wheel alongside Jerry Rafferty in the early/mid-70's) should have been more recognized in the pop idiom, and should have made the Top 10 or 20 with either hits or albums but sadly and unfortunately he didn't. Great singer and should have had the public exposure he so deservedly needed.

I appologize, I got the Steelers part WRONG, it being STEALERS WHEEL. Great music from Joe Egan. It does sound like Gerry Rafferty singing back up on this song. I wish this band would have stayed together and produced more music than they did. This was (still is) a fantastic sounding band. Mellow music. Good music for just hopping into the car and taking a long drive out in the country.

I would like to have seem them stay together a bit longer too... but before they went their seperate ways, they made three consummate, polished, under-rated, major label albums of superb folk-rock gems.

Their eponymous debut LP 'Stealer's Wheel' (1972)... the 2nd one titled 'Ferguslie Park' (1973) and the final release 'Right Or Wrong' (1975) are all characterised by an unerring sense of pop melody, fine harmonies, professional instrumentation & production that resonate long after listening.

It's amazing how much this guy sounds like Gerry Rafferty. I can now see why they sounded so good together in Steelers Wheel. Their voices are VERY smiliar. In fact I always thought Gerry was the lead singer for Stealers Wheel, not Joe Eagan. I am now awakened to Joe's music which is incredible. Gerry Rafferty and Joe's style are extremely similar. I bet if 100 people listened to thing song, 50 or more would identify Gerry Rafferty as the singer. Gosh this sounds like Gerry!

I agree, Rafferty's & Eagan's voices do have a similar quality... however, once you're able to identify their differences in tonality, enunciation & pitch etc, it isn't as difficult to know which one is singing. They harmonized great! The lead vocal parts on Stealer's Wheel albums were generally split between the both of them.

Stealers Wheel was the band Joe Egan & Gerry Rafferty formed in 1972 before going there separate ways. I think they broke up 'round 1975, then reformed again in 2008 (without Rafferty & Egan) and are still together to my knowledge. Egan & Rafferty's voices complimented each other as they sounded quite similar though there are differences and they often shared the lead - though Egan was the main lead vocals...

This should have been massive in the UK but sadly wasnt to be. Brings back great memories of hearing it on the excellent Mike Read Radio One evening show at the time. Underrated writer. Don't forget Joe Egan co-wrote 'Stuck In The Middle With You' it wasn't solely Gerry Raffety although it appears he gets all the credit - luckily, Joe gets half the royalties !

@58boy Indeed, shame Joe kinda dissapeared into obscurity while the late, great Mr Raffferty's solo career rocketed. Yeah he was a talented songwriter in his own right and had a good voice as is evident on the 3 Stealers Wheel albums. He turned up again on the two Gerry Rafferty albums in the 90's. He got a bit emotional when interviewed in the recent BBC2 Scotland Rafferty docu (when he would talk on the phone to Gerry but had to end the conversation as Rafferty was too drunk).
