@past1or I've read the whole background of this song on a CD and it didn't mention particulary bulgarian wedding music but in general bulgarian traditional music elements
@MrCold012 I'm bulgarian. And I have some background knowledge about out folk music. And can tel you that the wedding folk music is part of traditional folk music here.
@MrCold012 yeah thats true ... thats a typical bulgarian dance, called "horo"... and you say it like you read it... Im a bulgarian and listening to this song and knowing that a musician like Vai presents Bulgaria like that makes me even prowder being Bulgarian
This album is Vai's best record. His other stuff is good, but this is a landmark achievement in terms of conception and production. No-one else has ever done anything like this. He really set a precedent with this record, and as far as I'm concerned, more than any other record, this is the one that cemented his reputation as a player, and more so a composer.
yeah i totally thought that was going to be busted out... maybe this song was part of of some insight for him before he wrote for the love of god :) either way, amazing stuff on both sides, except this one is new, but not for long :D
i kno for sure steve said 5/4 and 11/8. i was like "ok oddball time signatures, i'll jus use my ear." then he started countin out those times, and thats where he lost me haha this is the only bulgarian styled music i listen to
one has to know: Balcan cultures are realy similar, Slavic origins, so one can hear 7/8 played all over Balcan. This type of music is characteristical for Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia....
I just listened to it, and yes, it sounds like the solo!
The only difference is that your song is all in phrygian dominant, but the solo Steve does is in a chromatic no major 2nd thing. Then he turns lydian, but that's an other story.
Wish i had that kinda sound :(

wasn't alive in an ultra world a live album? He recorded all the new songs on stage. Does that mean it's not a "studio" album?
GuillermoSmyser 3 years ago
no cus it was mixed and rendered in a studio. It's called live STUDIO album
M3TALLICA444 3 years ago
Actually, just about all live albums were mixed in a studio, and a ton of live albums have studio overdubs. It's still a live album.

search for "Kopanitsa A La Turka". sounds kind of similar to the solo part.
