Jake Shields is probably the best MMA grappler. His striking is improving, he won the final rounds against St Pierre with aggression and damage. GSP's game plan was to stay far away from Shields to avoid his take downs. Shields thought that sooner or latter they would start to exchange & he would get the TD. He finally realized that St Pierre was going to back away all night & Shields became more aggressive in his standup doing damage to the nose, eye, & bruising both cheek bones. 48-47.
@BigDaddyTerromus Most people don't know much about freestyle wrestling. They know Shields is a top level Sub Grappler and was All American in college, but he was a real high level freestyle wrestler. In Freestyle a backward step cost you a point. A regular HS or college take down is one point, but a high amplitude throw is five points.
A much tougher, more aggressive form of wrestling, Shields was invited to join the US National team, but as a single father couldn't afford it.

If Shields comes in with good endurance, it will probably go to decision, otherwise GSP will stop it earlier. Look at the Mayhem Miller fight; fairly close, Shields won due to takedowns and Miller essentially choked him out. Then look at GSP vs Miller, GSP is a whole different breed of weapon.
@pimp0573 Sometimes they aren't the most exciting, but I rarely find them boring as he is always working. He never just lays on people; he works to pass the guard, attempts submissions and stays busy.
@sinhaserpente He just laid on Hendo for 4 rounds, he never seemed to want to finish the fight. Hendo was so tired Jake should have been able to finish him like nothing but he didn't and it made for a boring fight.

Roger Gracie,Demian Maia,Ronaldo Jacaré,Big Nog,BJ Penn,Lil Nog and Rousimar Palhares.All these MMA Fighters are better grapplers than Shields and his "American Jiu-Jitsu".
@JhonnyMMARules Only Big Nog and BJ are near as good as Shields in MMA grappling. Roger, Maia and Jacare will probably get there with more time. Shields started in 1999 when the sport was still NHB, and has grown into one of 2-3 best grapplers in MMA.

Marcelo Garcia is a P4P great grappler, lost his only MMA fight to someone who wouldn't last a minute with Shields.
Strikes and standing position makes MMA wrestling and Jiu Jitsu different than wrestling, BJJ or grappling.

Many of the best fighters are Brazilian, love Nog, W. Silva and A, Silva etc. I really like a grappling based fighter who can adapt to striking.

But when Shields corner yelled 9 seconds he was able to " relax and wait for the bell " anyone who grapples or does medicine can tell you 3-4 seconds without blood to the brain & you are out cold.
Shields was not only not out, when the bell rang he jumped up & walked to his corner. He held Miller hands but didn't fight it, because no time.

GSP was fighting Leo Santos a multiple BJJ and grappling World Champion on another mat at the same time this bout was happening. Leo tapped him out in one minute putting him out of the Tournament.
Four fights latter Shields strangled Santos in one minute in the Semi's and was one of only two N. Americans to medal. Both fights are on Youtube, sidebar

@ninjion The real difference between Shields and Fitch is Shields finished 9 of last 12 by TKO or Sub. Shields is also one of only two fighters to win championships in 2 weight classes.
While GSP says he is too small for MW, Shields has gone back and forth on short notice twice and says he is willing to fight both as a WW and a MW in the UFC. Up for Okami and Menne & back to WW for Daley, Thompson, Verissimo, Condit etc, back up for Hendo, Lawler, Mayhem & after 2 years up, back down again.
@rush357x Yeah that is the point, during the years Shields fought at WW his walk around weight was 185lbs.
He went where the big fights were he went up & beat Menne & Okami at MW, but he was the smaller man fighting a bigger man, then going back to his own weight.
That is what he did with Lawler, he took the fight on 8 weeks notice so he didn't add much weight, but the big fights in Strikeforce were at MW. He stayed up did serious weight lifting, drinking protein shakes for 2 years& had to cut
I think Shields grappling is the best in MMA. He is a pure grappler, the explosive power & aggressiveness of wrestling blended with the position, submission & control techniques of Jiu Jitsu.

Roger Gracie and Werdum are better grapplers...although Shields is dangerous at ju jitsu. His wrestling isn't up to dealing with GSP's MMA version, nor is he able to deal with the pace Georges will set and keep for 5 rounds (if it goes that long).
Shields does post threats to GSP, but St-Pierre has more weapons in his arsenal than Jake, and negates Shields' best weapons with better wrestling in MMA.

Jake was sluggish, but he cut 40lbs in 9 weeks. I think it is another show of his HEART, like getting up after Hendo dropped him and still dominating the fight.
He had to use saunas because of an injury that repetitive running would have irratated. Saunas suck, but Shields fought through dehydration and fatigue and beat a top contender.
Jake Shields had a hard cut, and was sluggish, but anyone who thinks he didn't win the fight anyway should watch it again.
Shields gets # 15 in a row. He looked better against #2 MW Henderson and #4 MW Lawler and #2 WW Sakurai etc. but in a long career there is going to be a " just got by fight "

Shields also has a choke out win over Fitch in a Supper Fight at the Gracie Open.
As far as MMA goes this is important only because all these fight are grappling based.

His old walk around was185lbs during all the years he fought as a WW. It took him 2 years of serious strength & conditioning & protein/whey shakes to add the lean muscle we saw in the Hendo fight.

@JhonnyMMARules Only Big Nog and BJ are near as good as Shields in MMA grappling. Roger, Maia and Jacare will probably get there with more time. Shields started in 1999 when the sport was still NHB, and has grown into one of 2-3 best grapplers in MMA.
His pure grappling is pretty good too.

@JhonnyMMARules You are mixing BJJ, Grappling and MMA up. Shields is a better MMA grappler than the fighters you named below, wrestling is half of grappling BJJ is the other half.
Marcelo Garcia is a P4P great grappler, lost his only MMA fight to someone who wouldn't last a minute with Shields.
Strikes and standing position makes MMA wrestling and Jiu Jitsu different than wrestling, BJJ or grappling.

Many of the best fighters are Brazilian, love Nog, W. Silva and A, Silva etc. I really like a grappling based fighter who can adapt to striking.

But when Shields corner yelled 9 seconds he was able to " relax and wait for the bell " anyone who grapples or does medicine can tell you 3-4 seconds without blood to the brain & you are out cold.
Shields was not only not out, when the bell rang he jumped up & walked to his corner. He held Miller hands but didn't fight it, because no time.

GSP was fighting Leo Santos a multiple BJJ and grappling World Champion on another mat at the same time this bout was happening. Leo tapped him out in one minute putting him out of the Tournament.

@ninjion The real difference between Shields and Fitch is Shields finished 9 of last 12 by TKO or Sub. Shields is also one of only two fighters to win championships in 2 weight classes.
While GSP says he is too small for MW, Shields has gone back and forth on short notice twice and says he is willing to fight both as a WW and a MW in the UFC. Up for Okami and Menne & back to WW for Daley, Thompson, Verissimo, Condit etc, back up for Hendo, Lawler, Mayhem & after 2 years up, back down again.

@rush357x Yeah that is the point, during the years Shields fought at WW his walk around weight was 185lbs.
He went where the big fights were he went up & beat Menne & Okami at MW, but he was the smaller man fighting a bigger man, then going back to his own weight.
That is what he did with Lawler, he took the fight on 8 weeks notice so he didn't add much weight, but the big fights in Strikeforce were at MW. He stayed up did serious weight lifting, drinking protein shakes for 2 years& had to cut

Jake Shields was the big winner last night in Strikeforce even though he has moved on to the UFC.
Three of his last five opponents won by first round KO's. Hendo knocked out Babalu, Daley dropped Scott Smith and Lawler KO'd Matt Lindland.
Shields tapped out Lawler and Daley and dominated Henderson. Just keeps beating top tier fights GO JAKE.

Roger Gracie and Werdum are better grapplers...although Shields is dangerous at ju jitsu. His wrestling isn't up to dealing with GSP's MMA version, nor is he able to deal with the pace Georges will set and keep for 5 rounds (if it goes that long).
Shields does post threats to GSP, but St-Pierre has more weapons in his arsenal than Jake, and negates Shields' best weapons with better wrestling in MMA.

Jake was sluggish, but he cut 40lbs in 9 weeks. I think it is another show of his HEART, like getting up after Hendo dropped him and still dominating the fight.
He had to use saunas because of an injury that repetitive running would have irratated. Saunas suck, but Shields fought through dehydration and fatigue and beat a top contender.
That is how he got a 15 fight win streak!!!

Jake Shields had a hard cut, and was sluggish, but anyone who thinks he didn't win the fight anyway should watch it again.
Shields gets # 15 in a row. He looked better against #2 MW Henderson and #4 MW Lawler and #2 WW Sakurai etc. but in a long career there is going to be a " just got by fight "

As far as MMA goes this is important only because all these fight are grappling based.

His old walk around was185lbs during all the years he fought as a WW. It took him 2 years of serious strength & conditioning & protein/whey shakes to add the lean muscle we saw in the Hendo fight.
He put it on the right way, started to run it off when he first heard, lost 15lbs & pinched or pulled somethin
