GREAT VIDEO, THANKS !, recently went vegan, had been vegetarian for only about 6 months... I have lost about 30 lbs, am so full of energy, hair nails skin look so good, am now running, my 10km runs with more ease than before, I feel so happy in myself, no animal suffering for me, I am healthier than ever before, I have indeed found myself, and this is me now, It is a fulfilling way to live. I would say to anybody wishing to try a vegan lifestyle... DO it, do for yourself firstly,
It's funny what you said about those who profit~I had a teacher in collage(not veggie)he said how dairy was bad for us and people who were lacto intol. -that articles that told those people to eat small bits of cheese yoguart milk would be sponsored by the American Dairy Assoc.- So to prove him wrong/paranoid I did my paper on that. I was shocked to find he was right. And in independent books they spoke about calcium from veggies and Asian countries and osteop.-and they think milk is gross-thx!
I don't understand why people who eat whatever they want claim that they're healthier. I was a vegetarian for about 4 years and recently turned vegan. Honestly, I feel so much better than I used to. One time, someone I work with tried to tell me that he was much healthier than I am. He's about 50 lbs overweight; I'm a 110 lb girl with considerable muscle tone who runs marathons and is extremely healthy. Fuck the haterz, yo.
thanks so much Shelby! I live in Austin and grew up the same as you, but developed Aplastic Anemia (autoimmune disease- bone marrow failure) and am trying to be vegan. Your video reinforced everything I learned reading, The China Study" and I thank you for it!
Vegan proponents tend to focus on the dairy and meat industries, while glossing over the soy, corn, and processed health food industries.
I prefer to support my local organic farmers by buying raw milk from them. They treat their animals right, letting them live on pasture, and provide me with a product that makes me healthy (unlike soy milk). These people are heroes!
@MissJemimaPuddleduck Many vegans avoid soy too, one doesn't have to eat or drink soy in order to be vegan. Hemp milk or oat milk is more healthy than animal milk which has saturated fats and cholesterol. You are still contributing to animal slavery and death by drinking other animals milk, be it local organic or not.
@LaraHastings That's awesome. But I'm rather into cholesterol and saturated fat--good for the hormones, and the brain! I hang out at the farms I get my milk from, and these animals are allowed to roam pasture all day long, except when milked (twice a day, doesn't take long). And they're excited to get milked, cuz it means they get to eat oats. If that's slavery, I'm cool with it. Besides, life is short. I need animal foods to be healthy. That simple. My life is more important to me than a cow's.
@MissJemimaPuddleduck Good luck with getting clogged arteries! Besides eating plant based omega 3's are as good for hormones and the brain as animal based fats.
@LaraHastings Yeah, it'll be tough to do on this diet. Haha. Seriously, though, I don't go crazy on the fat, I'm not a low carber. Just like my potatoes with a bit of butter and whole milk. Ever heard of the Weston A. Price? Not the foundation, but the man and his book, Nutriton and Physical Degeneration? Can read it free online. This book is one of the reasons I don't believe saturated fat causes clogged arteries.
@MissJemimaPuddleduck Ok, yeah, you sounded like a low carber, my mistake. I have heard of Weston A. Price the man, he makes some good points. But there is so much research on cholesterol, and the big majority says saturated fats are not good. Weston A. Price was a dentist not a nutritional scientist. Eating animal products is not sustainable, I'd rather give a little bit for my health if it can guarantee that our next generations to come have resources left on this planet.
@LaraHastings Haha. I used to be one, so it's not surprising. Am into Matt Stone's 180degreehealth right now, so I'm still a little out there. Ha. Guess I just can't buy research that doesn't jive with history, and what I've personally witnessed. As far as sustainability, I, well, Idon'tbelieveinglobalwarming. Ahem. Please don't shoot me. Anyway, there's land unsuitable to farming, that's perfect for grazing cattle. And manure makes soil better for growing plant foods. Think the circle will last
@MissJemimaPuddleduck Well, it hasn't really that much to do with global warming, as I said it takes so much resources to produce animal products. I haven't really seen much land that is unsuitable for farming, most land I see is full of fields that grow crops for animal food. Of course it's good to take advantage of grazing lands, it's good for some places to have cattle. But as it is now, meat production takes up crazy amounts of land, any land.
@LaraHastings Ah, right. The grain thing. Well, there is the grass-fed option, but even conventional beef are fed more grass in their diet than grain. You might find this article interesting: "Cattle Feedlot: Behind the Scenes" on the Precision Nutrition site. (Can't include a link, but if you do a search it'll come up.) It's written by a vegan. Another, with regards to the land issue, is "How can grazing heal land" on the Managing Wholes site. Grazing animals are essential for topsoil.
@MissJemimaPuddleduck You really think all cattle in the world can be grass fed? You forget things can be different between countries on how agriculture is done. I have grown on the country side and seen with my own eyes how it is done. It is not sustainable at all. Of course some grounds like natural flower fields could actually benefit from cattle, but the amount of that is small. Eating plants through the stomachs of other animals is absurd. I did not find that article helpful btw.
@LaraHastings I honestly don't know. Would be interesting to find out. I have friends who farm in Paraguay, 100% grass-fed. I have no problem with grain-fattened beef from a health standpoint, only an environmental one. You have caused me to think more carefully about this, so I thank you. Conventional grain farming causes loss of topsoil. So I do agree, conventional North American farming may be unsustainable. I grew up on one of these farms...I dearly hope this will change.
@MissJemimaPuddleduck Oh, and of course, I do not imagine grass-feeding is possible everywhere. Just wonder if enough grass-fed beef could be produced somewhere, to satisfy worldwide demand. I really have no idea...May be quite impossible.
@MissJemimaPuddleduck I'm sorry, but I'm really getting tired of you trying to morally justify your flesh eating. Animals are getting killed and slaughtered for your own pleasure, that's the fact. Meat eating is something I can't tolerate if done only for pleasure, I understand if it would be a survival situation were there wouldn't be any other options. But the thing is, today we have so many options to live sustainably and ethically, why choose the worse?
@LaraHastings Why? Biology. Lions, as carnivores, would go extinct if they all went vegan. I, as a omnivore, require a balance of plant and animal foods in my diet to thrive. It's that simple. I was vegan for a time, as a teenager. Said the same stuff you're saying. I got very sick...Once my mom got me to eat animal foods again, I got better. This is not about indulgence. Meat isn't ultra-delicious to me. Plant foods are way yummier. This is about being alive. It's a survival situation thing.
@MissJemimaPuddleduck Well, most people who did not thrive on a vegan diet did it all wrong.
I'm not saying carnivore animals are doing something morally wrong, of course they can't live on a vegan diet they would die. The question is could you?
But yeah, lets hope for better times. That organic grass fed animals would become more common, even in my country :)
It's an uphill battle, the meat and dairy companies have been way too effective with their brainwashing, many men base their "manhood" on how much beef/meat they eat, and think God put animals on the planet to eat.
And then their are the vegans that ruin it for the rest of us, acting so over the top, that people just discount them as "nuts" and no one wants to listen to them.
We need more people like you Shelby, just stating the facts.
Animal protein foods include meat, poultry, fish, dairy products and eggs and are said to be of high biological value. That is, they contain all nine essential amino acids that can not be synthesized in the body (histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine).
Plant protein sources, although good for certain essential amino acids, do not always offer all nine essential amino acids in a single given food.
Hey, yikes. Don't be so mean. People who are trying to be vegetarians and/or vegans are only trying to do what they think is right, and you should respect that.
Partially digested cow cremains may appear as dry, hard stools without extra water, fiber, fur, antacids or laxatives to remedy the difficulties of trying to eat meat. Unfortunately, carcinogens in meat are absorbed. "Dietary patterns characterized by a low frequency of meat and potato consumption and frequent consumption of fruit and vegetables and fat-reduced foods are consistent with a decreased risk of colorectal
"Human milk has the lowest protein concentration (about 7% of energy) of any primate milk that has been studied. In general, it appears that primates produce small daily amounts of a relatively dilute milk (Oftedal 1984). Thus the protein and energy demands of lactation are probably low for primates by comparison to the demands experienced by many other mammals.

Hey! I've seen you on the grounds at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. I'll remember to say hi to you when you're in and around the Outdoor Stage this year. Will you be here this year?
theatreangelina - try ricemilk (Ryza, Natura, or another organic brand, preferably not Rice Dream), I never liked the taste of soymilk (plus that it's not as good for you) but I LOVE ricemilk and it's chalk full of calcium also. It's very fresh and smoothe tasting, with no nasty aftertaste. delish! I prefer the vanilla flavor but some ppl prefer original flavor. I hope this helps.
