I agree, at least with South Korean and Thai movies. For example, this Alone was good, I think. It was surprising and managed to frighten even me :) Unluckily, I haven't seen any Philippine, Taiwanese or Singaporean films.

The only problem about Philippine horror movies is the visual effects.. You can really tell that it's fake, which ruins the mood while watching. But still, I must say that they're worth watching.

though there haven't been as many breakthroughs for Filipino horror yet, I can TELL you of two outstanding, well-acted and very scary ones: SIGAW (2005) and BLACKOUT (2007) I'm sure there will be more soon. SIGAW was picked up as an American remake (which will ruin it, I'm sure)

I agree with you that Korean (TALE OF TWO SISTERS, RED SHOES, OLDBOY) Japanese (CURE, PULSE, RETRIBUTION and Thai SHUTTER, THE EYE, and ALONE) are excellent horror. But Guillermo Del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH, CRONOS and DEVILS BACKBONE are also brilliant. He's also produced EL ORFANATO (from a young Spanish director) which is getting rave reviews.

Claro, Guillermo del Toro es excelente director, nadie en latinoamerica sabe hacer este tipo de peliculas más que él y tan dignamente, pero le falta el "punch", ese ingrediente que tienen las películas asiaticas que pasan del suspenso al terror. Yo creo que los trabajos de DEL TORO siempre se quedan en las penumbras del suspenso y no explotan, exceptuando a el LABERINTO DEL FAUNO que no es una película de terror.

I don't think so. DEVILS BACKBONE is a good movie with a excelent director but not a good horror movie, at less, I wasn't scared when I watched and I was 14 years old. In Latinoamérica, the horror movies doesn't have a good production but maybe this is the first latin horror movie that deserve all my respect. I like Devil's Backbone but not too much like the asian horror movies. I hope that El Orfanato is better.
