It looks to me like your outside fan motor is draging. I cant be sure but it didnt look like it was turning very fast at all. This would cause heat build up in the compressor and trip the internal switch. I dont think it a capacitor because it sounds strong when it does kick in.
My Carrier Infinity heat pump compressor has packed it in after 4 years in a moderate climate. The noisy moose call or trumpeting reversing valve may have precipitated its demise. Very expensive to fix. Heat Pumps are a costly and high maintenance item from my experience.
check your capicitor sometimes the compressor side will go bad but not the fan side [take the wires off of either herm or c not nessesary to do both and turn your meter to MFD and stick the leads on both herm and c and it should read very close to what it says on the cap], if good check your wiring to the compressor to make sure its not got a burnt place although usually if that happens it will throw the breaker but its worth checking, if not the motor inside the compressor going bad id say sry
Yea? Well i have a 1976 Pontiac Ventura that i bought on march of 2009 and it still runs perfectly fine, the engine is from an 88 chevy iroc camaro (305 w/Holly double barrell carb and TH400 tranny) its still got the original rims and original interior so obviously its waàáâäãåąāy better than your trains, tranes and carriers and it runs waaay better too so u guys can just **** **
Comp thermal overload was obviously tripping, reasons? Reversing valve leakage? Low line voltage/high running amps. Worn compressor. Bad comp run cap. High comp superheat due to low charge (most likely), or kinked suction line, or starving metering device. Overcharge. High head press condition due to blocked condenser coil, or even a high cooling heat load (return air open to attic?). Intermittent fan operation due to faulty outdoor motor or run cap or wiring. Hard to read its mind from here.
It is all about installation. My parents had a 1993 nordyne that just got replaced last week. My church had a carrier unit that was from 1955, and two tranes from 1982. I also have friends that had bad failures from these brands. It has very little to do with the brand.
I will say it again CARRIER is JUNK in my opinion Ask any independent repairman today and I guarantee you when you tell them you have a CARRIER unit that has problems, They won't even mess with them. I have two of there PIECES of JUNK and another family member that had one of their NOISY ASS heat pumps that also was a PIECE of JUNK that was in service less than 6 years. I feel sorry for all of their authorized dealers.
@HVACKID94 How about this, I have two Carrier units. Puron, and I wouldn't give you two cents for them. Carrier has a know problem with these units. I fought it for 4 years, service call after service call. Come to find out there is a known flaw in these units. Carrier will replace the condenser coils but it will cost about 700.00 for the install. I had two Trane units that never gave me a bit of problems during the 12 years we lived in the house.
@Mollyandtaffy Carrier kicks trane's ass. Hands down. Trane these days SUCKS ASS!!! Carrier has ALWAYS been the best. 700 dollars for a condenser coil installation? That isn't Carrier's fault. That is your technician's fault. Shut up talking shit about Carrier until you get your facts straight. I know someone who has a 1994 Carrier heat pump that has NEVER HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM. NEVER. And someone else owns a Trane XL14i from 2008 that had to have it's compressor REPLACED after 2 FREAKING YEARS!
Not sure if it's the same problem but I have a bryant heat pump. The compressor starts up and runs for about 15 minutes. Frost forms on the reducer valve of the indoor unit but the coils do not get cold. Then the compressor shuts off for good. I turn it off for a few hours and restart it and the whole process repeats.
You need to check the amperes drawing just when the compressors is running amd the noise tell me you have a mechanical problem so the best you can do is replace by a new one.
First it of all the sound in the compressor is not NORMAL..you either have a bad compressor or you need a Start KIT....most likely the compressor is going bad......
@corea2006 I agree....I've seen a 1 year old Goodman do the same thing. New Start kit and it's been running for two years now. I wonder if that system is over charged to though too. That compressor sounds like it's in a serious bind. Love to know the head pressure and how clean the coil is.
You need the proper tools to check a system! Check the amperage when the compressor tries to start. The rating plate will give a LRA (locked rotor amps) if your amp draw is this high , you have a problem! It could be a bad capacitor. If the cap looks bloated it is bad. It could look o.k. and be weak. A weak cap will cause the compressor to run a higher than normal amperage causing the compressor to overherat and cut off from the thermal overload. a bad cap usually won't start the motor at all.
too much gas lol did it work before ??? if it did then its not a refrigerant problem its drawing to much amps.........thats obvious wich in turn causes it to overheat then when it cools down agian it try agian its probly going to be a problem with the compressor!
if the compressor sounds like it's trying to start but it doesn't means it's not getting enough power to turn, units old or new sometimes need some more power to get them started try to obtain a hard start or super boost kit to give the compressor a kick of power to guarentie start up. If the contactor was bad the fan wouldn't run either. The capacitor could be bad. But get a hardstart kit it should solve the problem. The compressor keeps trying to start but there isn't enough power.
These units are junk. My mom bought a house brand new in 2000 with carrier furnace and AC unit. They both had to be serviced every year until 06 when she had the entire system ripped out and replaced with Train units.
There are at least 12 different things that can be wrong- get somebody licensed to check it out for you. if the unit is only a couple years old, and was installed by a legitimate contractor and not purchased on the web- there are warranties on damn near everything under the hood. I wouldn't try to do any repairs on this yourself, nor use any comments on here to diagnose this, as without being over top of the problem it's about impossible to be precise. Check out your contractors on BBB...
I have a Carrier 2007 Carrier airhandler and a 2004 Carrier Heat Pump. I installed a time delay that would drop out the reversing valve one minute after the thermostat stops the call for cooling. This works great and cost less than $100.
the humming came from the compressor and thers a lot of reason why is it happens, first ok maybe its over charge, maybe the one of the contact at the contactor was burn out,or maybe because of the preassure switch contac was burn out
I have a carrier also and it is the sorriest piece of junk that I have ever owned. I had a trane in my former home and it worked fine. I did not have to do anything to it for 9 years. When I replaced it I only spent $1000. I now have to spend $3000 to replace this one because the compressor burnt up. I have had problems with this unit since I purchased my house in 2000. Each year I have had some problem with it. I will never buy a carrier anything for as long as I live.
From the audio I can tell you what the problem is. This system is overcharged...not undercharged. The compressor has the oil washed out of it. Most of The oil is most likely in the evaporator now. Liquid refrigerant entereng the compressor plus a lack of oil is causing the noise.
I have this same problem. They have checked the freon, it is is good. They did replace the a switch inside the unit and that id not fix it. It appears that that the compressor get hot and the thermal switch shuts it off. It will only run about two hours. The tech. said he would have to call the Carrier tech support on Monday to see what is wrong. I think I should have called the Carrier people instead of these guys as the Carrier people would have known what the problem is.
do amp test after unit has cooled down for about 1-2 hours, if high amp test capcitor, if ok all is ok try putting on hard starter for comp, (that is saying that the charge of freon is ok)i have som cases were other companies put in 13 seer or higher unit with 10 seer a coil works put on hot day comp. will not start after some use.
FIRST OF ALL, SHUT THE MACHINE DOWN, before you loose you compressor to a burn-out.
Compressor more than likely is red hot, and is going off on an internal thermal safety. If the compressor is hot on the top, then insufficent freon is returning to the compressor due to Low charge, bad metering device, clogged L.L. drier, Kinked L.L. or...
You all can guess all you want but I own the top of the line Carrier and it is the biggest piece of shit I have ever paid good money for.I will never own another Carrier product. Hope the Koreans or the Japanese start making central a/c and put Carrier and companys like them out of buisness.
hey guys, i'm learning about AC systems, is the capacitor located on the outdoor coil? what does the capacitor do? i don't mind getting a minus one for this..
The system is trying to start against high head pressure. A TXV with a balance port needs to be installed. Or a hard start capacitor needs to be wired in parallel to the run cap.
you need a start kit for the compressor a 38ycc only comes with a run capacitor a start kit is a special order field installed part you propably have a 208 volt service 230 volt could hide the problem the 38ycc is a cheap carrier unit its good but not great next time you order a unit get the best or better but never the cheapest, cheap units have minimal performance enhancing parts as such they usually DONT have crankcase heaters, hi and lo pressure safeties, freez stats, compressor start kits
Check the run cap first to see if it's within 5-10%, then cut the power to the unit and tighten the lugs on the contactor, the outdoor disconnect and possibly on the breaker in the house as well. Check or change the Start capacitor.
Check at the evaporator coil and see if it has a TXV on it, if so someone might have overcharged the system via superheat instead of charging it by subcooling. Even if this is so it should start with a good cap and start cap.
I suggest that you check the compressor start capacitor. Assuming that the refrigerant level is fine, and assuming that it is a single phase unit, this could be the problem. Explanation: The unit runs for 1 or 2 hours, thermostat satisfies, unit cycles off. In a few minutes the thermostat calls again. The unit attempts to start, but due to the added heat load of a hot day, the compressor must have its proper phase shift in its start winding. If the start cap is weak it will not be able to start.
you dont know me but im an a/c tech in las vegas an whats going on is your compressor keeps goining off on overload and then keeps trying to start but cant (thats the humming) and then when it finally cools down it starts up i dont know if its the video audion but the compressor sounds real noisy and what can cause an overload is your low on refrigerent or the pump compacity of your compressor is dieing
