I never have understood the Shuttle program shutdown. I understand they are working on the new moon program but keep them on standby in case you need them.
@kissarmyman The shuttles aren't designed for launches past low earth orbit, so if anything were to happen on the moon, NASA definitely wouldn't send them.
Also, they've concluded that the Space Shuttle Program was too costly to continue, even though they have a reusable orbiter. They'd rather have a small reusable capsule as compared to a whole aircraft. Sad, isn't it?
@anzin74 How is choosing to have a smaller reusable space shuttle sad?! The shuttles were designed to help deliver heavy loads into space like the ISS modules, satellites, etc. The ISS is practically complete. Only thing left is to deliver supplies and American astronauts to it.
Also since everyone all of a sudden is bitching and caring about overspending, like you said, the Shuttles are too costly. Use a smaller shuttle with already advanced tech, that's already saved billions.
@bubblinbrownsugar616 Yeah, it's just the sentimental part of me. I see the Space Shuttle one of the most defining creations in the era of space travel. So even though it is a lot more economically efficient to use a smaller reusable capsule as compared to a whole lifting body, I feel like we've just let go of something very close to all our hearts.
Then again, I was never one for change, so it's just me.
@anzin74 Oh okay. I'll miss the Shuttle too. I'll miss talking along with the communications on launch (Houston Discovery Roll Program. Roger Roll Discovery! LOL!), and I wish I was able to see a launch live but they have done there purpose and it sucks it can't go pass LEO. If it was able to do that, oh best believe I'd be the first to keep the program going!! :)
Exactly 1 whole minute from touch down to CDR calls "Wheel Stop"...Seems alot quicker than that..Like only a few secs in the scheme of things...Life moves pretty fast on the space shuttle..really fast.
& religious zealots are jealous that man is more powerful than their ridiculous and laughable god concept and his burning bush and his book of death and child rape , the bible :)
@FantasticBob7000 They have already been doing that for years now. Search "Fake Shuttle" and "Fake ISS" Your head will explode at some of the beliefs some lunatics have.
Going up, coming down, this awesome testament to USA's determination, triumph, ingenuity, engineering and greatness never, ever fails to give me goosebumps! What has any other society in the history of this planet ever achieved that's even come close?!
@predatortheme The orbiters have been continously up dated on the inside. The problem is the inherent design from the beginning is flawed. That is having people on the side of the fuel tank. Also the cost to launch is high because of the infastructure and people involved.
@predatortheme They probably would've had it not been for a shitload of politicians that "are smarter than us" deciding they need more money to spend on entitlements, bailouts and other politically correct programs. Making the Muslim world "feel better about themselves 'for their many contributions to science'" apparently is a more efficient use of our space program! Well, about 30 years of very succesful service out of these beauties is still pretty good anyway.
I like when she says the shuttle less than 10 miles in ALT at 2:05 yet that telescope is latched and pin pointing the shuttle if it was only 10000 feet high !
@wormsicle Dude! that lady sounds like my grandmother! I bet she's a senior citizen! If not, I bet she's a chubby nerdy gal. Either way, I bet you won't be licking any buttholes once you see her in real life!
This was an amazing yet sad event. The Discovery & the rest of the fleet are great. It moved me enough that I even cried. I hope the desire for space travel stays strong. An end to an awesome era.
You know what airboyd, I change my mind, THEY SHOULDN'T LEAVE THE GROUND, THEY SHOULD BE PLACED UNDER THE SPACE SHUTTLE DURING IGNITION! XD THX FOR POSTING I SUB!
i cant belief that the news stations had so many other so called important news than seeing the astronauts come out of the shuttle and ask them questions about the flight.
airboyd - great footage. I made a video tribute the the Shuttle Discovery's last mission that any NASA nut would probably love. It shows VAB assembly, crawler rollout and last actual launch (STS-133). Please give it a look spacefans: watch?v=Qj5tHzcMe0g
@silicon212 I think what you're hearing is the exhaust "puffing" from the APUs. On night landings and/or the infrared camera, you can actually see little puffs of flame from the APU exhausts, which are up on top of the orbiter near the tail.
@tortillaandbeans thats actually a great analogy. the space shuttle does pretty much drop like a rock most of the way, and only decreases its slope of decline most sharply as it makes its circular landing trajectory.
@tortillaandbeans : Yeah; I do remember seeing a documentary where one of the female astronaut-pilots said the shuttle had the "aerodynamics of a brick".
@L6OWY i've heard it as the shuttle approaches edwards AFB scary as hell, ur sitting down and all of a sudden everything shakes for a second or 2, and ur like OMG!! then i ran to the tv, checked, and i could watch the shuttle fly into edwards :D
@edwinshap1 they had to land at edward afb a few yrs ago when i lived in palmdale...it during summer so kids were home and we heard the booms and it was amazing how loud they were! shook pretty good...i had heard them when i lived down in oc, but that was the only time i was in palmdale when it happened!
@AERODYNAMICMICROSOFT Hhahaha! Good Idea! But when I watched this video, I realised that the space shuttle during final approach is just like a big stone with small wings...
@Zoloft61 How could you feel prood when there's overloaded airplanes flying 80-95km up the earth's atmosphere when there's freaking UFO's controlled by people travelling from star to star already?! Fucked up.
Absolutely stunning! The design of the space craft, the professionalism of the astronauts and the mission control teams, all the calculations that go into each mission, the missions themselves... and of course the beauty of the flight of the shuttle itself, from launch till touchdown! Mind boggling to say the least!!!
A question though, how did they film this approach, especially if the shuttle is so high up and so far away at first? Just ground cameras?
@winterstellar As I understand it, when the nose hits the speed of sound - the first sonic boom, a fraction of a second later the leading edges of the wings hit the speed of sound, the second sonic boom.
@winterstellar All aircraft that break the sound barrier have a double sonic boom but the size of the craft determines how close together they are. Most are right on top of each other and sound like one because the craft are small (like jet fighters). The shuttle is a large craft that breaks the barrier and because of its size gives you the double boom.
