The Floating Islands, also called Angel Island, is in the sky and the Master Emerald is its power source, but when the Master Emerald was taken, it fell from the sky and into the ocean. When the Emerald is back on the island, it floats back up to its original place.

Robotnik was there because you didn't get all of the emeralds. you can play the extra boss and stage as hyper sonic if you go to Angel Island act one, grab a swing thing, and enter this code: Left Left Left Right Right Right Up Up Up. You should hear a chime. Press start + A and then press down until you see _SOUND_TEST_. Press start on that, select the stage "Doomsday," and press start. Now, you are at the TRUE final boss. Beat him to see the real ending.

the reason sonic fell is because everything on earth or in the atmosphere falls at the same speed due to gravity. i could drop a huge fat man and a pebble at the same time out of a plane and they would both hit the ground at the same time... :)

Chimney, the Master Emerald is the sole object that keeps Angel Island (the floating island) afloat. Due to it being stolen, the island fell into the sea. Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald, and is sworn to protect it as his father did. Thumbs up so Chimney can see!

one was called sonic 3

the other, sonic and knuckles, you could attach the sonic 3 cartridge to sonic and knuckles and play both games one after the other, if he had only done sonic 3 it would have stopped at Launch Base zone

You need the Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds to fight the true final boss, and get the good ending. Tip get the emeralds, go to angel island zone act 1. find the ring, get the emeralds there, the restart the level every time you fail, or get one, you will be able to get 7 of the emeralds there, then do the same again in the Mushroom Hill zone, for the rest.

The floating island fell down and you were supposed to get all the chaos and super emeralds in order to get a special ending where Sonic actually keeps the master emerald, rather than having him lose it at the end. Then you return the master emerald and the island floats back up into the sky. There is 3 endings. You get one for not getting all the chaos emeralds (Worst. You got this one), one for not getting all super emeralds (Okay), and one for getting all super emeralds (Best).

Basically the story with the island goes: The power of the giant gem gave the island it's power to float and all the happy jazz. Without it, the island fell back to sea level. The ultimate mission being to retrieve it by the end of the game by collecting the chaos emeralds to become Super Sonic, battle Eggman in space after you finish the level you just did. By finally defeating him proper, you snatch the large gem back, place it back, island floats up, Knuckles waves goodbye. Credits roll.
