In an interview with the Observer Music Magazine December 2007, Thom Yorke was asked if "Motion Picture Soundtrack," the last track on Kid A, ends with a suicide. The Radiohead vocalist replied: "No, 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' ends with little tweety angel noises, I seem to remember. [sings quietly] 'I will see you in the next life...' No, that could just be saying goodbye to someone dying. They don't have to be doing it themselves. You can read suicide into most things, can't you?"
Wow this song has some really great comments. This is such a beautiful song. It's a hauntingly beautiful and depressing song. And just when you think it's finally over. You get that little hopeful instrumental. I didn't care much for a lot of Kid A but when you end an album with something as powerful as this then it all just seems irrelevant. What a beautiful beautiful song.
I sruggle to express just how perfectly this song is structured... that brief resurgance of music that follows the complete digital silence is undoubtedly the most uplifting sound ever recorded by a group of musicians. Beautifully optimistic ending for an otherwise relentlessly bleak masterpiece.
I think that I just raped the play button. But not like all those comment that say the same; I just really, really raped it......and I'm doing it again.
so im new to the whole itunes thing, after searching: red hot chili peppers, metallica, alice in chains, ect, i came to realise that unlike all the other bands, i literally like almost every single radio head song :y
my very own opinion about the whole record, its that .... its the whole process of dying, every song its a stage, and this final song its you last moment alive, and the big silence part at 3:16 its the moment where you die, and the gorgeous sounds at 4:17 its the moment where you finally reach peace
I gave all my love to this girl. She doesnt want me. So ill stop sending letters. and maybe i dont desreve love like in the movies, cheap sex and sad films is all i will ever get. Even so i cant help but feel. . . I think you're crazy. maybe.
this song is an example of silence being beautiful...the pauses between verses and the breath noise before the "i will see you..." make me feel this unfathomable feeling that's so beautiful
I love radiohead's songs, but why do they make me consider what songs should be played at my funeral? Is it because the music is so emotional or is it because the music can be depressing? Any one else?
I first heard this song at a very bad part in my life, I was wanting to end my life, and I heard this song and this song summed up my whole life up until that point, being fed white lies, but something about that part where Thom sings, "Stop sending letters" and the harps come in, I just burst into tears, it was so beautiful and so I've continued living, making myself better, dedicating it to making music, all thanks to this song. this song saved my life.
My theory is that the part starting at 4:30 is like, a preview for Amnesiac. Like, a "we're not done yet...". You can hear elements from Amnesiac during that part, an obvious one because the in-reverse-sounding-things from Like Spinning Plates.
@NumorWashington I always thought of Kid A as a first stages human life preview. It has love,depression...MPS is like a shifting point,a person being reborn after all those years he eventually realizes that everything is wrong and he needs to change it.That's when Packt Like Sardines kicks in
Back when my ex first liked me for a while, he sent me this song because we were both fans of Radiohead. One night it was raining and I tried to find him at Starbucks and waited there for him, playing and replaying this song in my headphones until he turned up. He always said it was a weird song to get together to. "I will see you in the next life"? Well, makes sense now.
This is one of those songs that can put me in the saddest mood of reverie possible.. I think you all know what I mean
@Stiny114 Oh no I listen to this album a lot just because Its not my favorite does not mean it doesn't get listened to over and over. I really do not think there is a single radiohead album that is not a musical landmark or at least just all around jaw dropping My tastes just have me enjoying other albums more so. Also I did not listen to this when it was first released so the magic of hearing the sounds in this album is spoiled by everyone trying to copy it since on my ipod kid a play count: 37
Sometimes I find myself wishing Radiohead weren't so popular. They feel personal to me. It feels wrong that so many others share my enjoyment of their music. Selfish, I know.
so i finally listened to this album for the first time and I was impressed beyond my wildest expectations. with nearly everything but this. this song did more then that. I teared up a bit and after I heard it, i just replayed it, again...and again...and again....and again. m favorite Radiohead song and one of the most beautiful things ive ever had the pleasure to witness
fair enough, but "one of the worst?" I'm speaking more to the initial song before the long silence, but I just think it is beautiful (I love especially how it opens up around 1:40 with the chime/harp-ish sounds), and in the context of the album i just find it wonderful so it's hard for me to believe that a fan would find it one of the worst! but hey, no disrespect.
I'm convinced that the part entering at 4:18 isn't a hidden track. As a 'Motion Picture Soundtrack', it's something that would be put to a film, with a gap for a sequence that doesn't need music. If that part were solely a hidden track that wasn't part of the album as a whole, and just stuck on the end, there wouldn't be more silence at the end. I can't confirm that, but that's how I feel.
@fruitypeebils same here lol, i think mine would be 1. Black star 2. Planet Telex 3. Bulletproof... I Wish I Was 4. Sulk 5. Kid A 6. Prove Yourself 7. Packt Like Sardines in a crushd tin box 8. (Nice Dream) 9. A Punchup at the wedding 10. Optimistic
@Francois1000 I wasn't talking about his war strategies. Look at his proposed second bill of rights, you'll shit your pants. By the way, 30 and still in school huh? Well it's never late to get an education, good on you.
@MaxClarkso Good luck with your shitty newspaper album and your mid-tier rinse repeat 30 minute radiohead LP. Hey, at least you're a "true fan". And Besides, those last few tracks aren't half bad.
@sp4eva1 well, I just don't understand why you're talking about 9/11. it has nothing to do with radiohead, or this song. everything changes, albeit cyclically. other nations have also taken a beating :/
but what would I know, really? simply put, I'm just an uptight bore.
@sp4eva1 dude of course we're not confident anymore good things dont last 4ever every empire must fall its just out turn buddie...when the ppl are no longer in control moral goes down, so in a few words we're screwed...and radiohead conveys feelings of decay in their powerful beautiful music
@agindisguise09 thanks. That's just what I mean. It also so happens, that I was a teen in the 90s, so growing up I had this "idealized" image of America, but it was also backed up with facts that we were powerful and confident-- but now, to coincide with my adulthood, this country has gone astray....
Ok I've had this album for over a year now, and unless I'm really deaf I can't hear anything after 5:12. Is there a particular reason for the minute and 45 seconds of silence?
I totally agree with MaxClarkso. I also feel that after The Bends they went the opposite direction compared to most of the other band who wanted to "stay relevant" to the industry. Enter: Ok Computer and they exceeded not only the fans expectations, but some of the same musicians that made that choice and faded away.
I love Radiohead, and I never fully understood why Sigur Ros was listed as a inspiration for Thom Yorke, until I heard this song. If your looking for a band that kind of sounds like this look them up.
silence for a hundred seconds. I felt a chill down my spine in anticipation for what was to come. Nothing sadly, though that is what makes Radiohead so great: unpredictable no matter what
I had to put on more clothes because of the shivers.

If your looking for a band that kind of sounds like this look them up.

try opening this same video in another tab like 15 seconds after the first one starts, it sounds pretty cool

silence for a hundred seconds. I felt a chill down my spine in anticipation for what was to come. Nothing sadly, though that is what makes Radiohead so great: unpredictable no matter what
