@connorhhea What an ignorant statement. Merle has a legendary voice, one of the most popular singer song writers of all time. He's an old man now, so of course his voice has deteriorated... That happens to everyone eventually. Listen to the music he made back in his prime, starting with this one. youtube.com/watch?v=ad9De8V07a4
I listened to your link and his voice is better at reaching good notes there, but it still has a quaver when he holds the note. Don't get mad at me because your hero doesn't hold up to my modernistic judgment. :|
@connorhhea Whether you like his voice or not is a matter of personal preference, but I wasn't speaking to that, I was speaking to your comment about "all the funked up notes." But even then, for you to say that he has a terrible voice is ridiculous, especially considering the fact that he's considered to be one of the greatest singers of all time

You just have a stylistic problem with him, but his amazing talent as a singer are undisputed by any credible sources within the music industry, both critics and fellow musicians alike.
@connorhhea The quaver in his voice that you mention is a stylistic issue... That's his style, he's not forced to do that by a defect in his voice. In fact that quaver wasn't something that added to his style until years after he started singing (he never did it in his early songs). He doesn't use the quaver in all the time in all of his newer songs either, regardless of the pitch.
I'm just guessing that you're not a fan of classic country music, or perhaps contry music at all.
America need to get rid of oil and rebuild the system on geothermical energy and electric cars. No more wars in the Middle East for oil, no more high gas prices and no more oil crises and oil spills. Clean and cheap and inexaustable, geothermical energy.
America's biggest threat comes from within. It comes from the people that think they deserve everything that comes with a first world nation (roads, fire trucks, schools, national defense, etc.) yet they claim that it's tyranny to pay for these things (taxes). Those people, and the enablers that they elect to represent them will kill this country.

@grizzhunter59 What you fail to realize is that my Toyota was built in KY using more domestic steel and parts than many of the big 3 are. There are alot of Americans who depend on those jobs. Get in your Ford and see how many parts are imported from Mexico (all wiring assemblies) and Canada (engine and drivetrain elements).
@grizzhunter59 that would work, if all the jobs were not out sourced to other countries. If the government would penalize companies for out sourcing then I would love it

@grizzhunter59 Are you a GM employee or you just don't know a shit of business administration? seriously dude, Toyotas and Hondas are designed and made by Americans. Both companies pay taxes to the states & federal government of this country. Toyota alone employs directly almost 29,000 people and 164,000 indirectly; the company has made a record investment in this country for $18.3 billion among facilities, infrastructure, social programs, etc. So next time you see a Corolla...think of America.
This is so funny - poor white trash, they have every opportunity, free education, access to everything, and still they're blaming others for their short comings... LOL - how sad...
Wow, you're stupid and a LIAR, I feel sorry for your parents for having had such a piece of sh*t for a child. I truly feel bad for you're whole family living in ur double wide.
Tell it Like it Is Merle, America Has alot of issues they need to fix before they go to butting into other peoples business. Not Many admit but its true
I don't care what Merle's political position is now and I'm no fan of either party, however, I do find it ridiculous to state that we, here in the United States, need liberation the most. If I lived in a country that was really oppressive, I'd be pretty offended. And what does he cite for evidence that we need liberation? Bad roads. Yeah, tell that to the guy who was shot or hanged for speaking out against his government. America at her worst is still better than most!
The Pentagon LOSES (cannot account for) EACH YEAR more money each year than the *BUSH* Bail-out, the Obama Bail-out, and the proposed healthcare reform COMBINED. In other words, terrorists have enough of OUR money between their couch cushions to pay for everything we need. Google it.
In fact genius... take the total cost of all those wars "COMBINED" and add unto that the cost of the Louisiana Purchase, the New Deal, the Marshall Plan and the NASA Space Program combined and it IS STILL LESS than the OBAMA BAILOUT!!!
yeah thanks obama for wat the money he has promised still hasnt reached the workers who r in need of new contracts for rebuilding roads but hey long it sounds good right i know of 4 contr companies that had to lay off over half of there workers for lack of funding to the state goverments for infrastructure wich was his main stance while being elected so what ever all poloticians r frauds say 1 thing do another.
What State are you in... perhaps you need to look to THEM to find out what the hold-up is... where I am there's plenty of road work going on, if your State is lagging behind, perhaps your STATE government is holding things up.
Remember what Robert Reich and Charles Rangel said? (look it up on youtube if you forgot)
White male construction workers need not apply for any stimulus money. All the stimulus money is being directed to minorities... to give them jobs and welfare dollars, not to create jobs.
You think the layoffs are bad now? hah, you havent seen nothin yet..
turn on C-Span and watch a session of congress and you tell me...
use your own eyes and ears and see for yourself..
You can either believe your own eyes and ears, or you can refuse the truth and and continue to believe the lies of Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman and John Stewart....
The cost of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, the invasion of Panama, the Kosovo War and numerous other small conflicts is STILL LESS than the "Obama Bailout Bill"......
get a life man. government and the bureaucrats who run it are out to get us all, but until you do something about it no sense in getting mad over a music video.
I just drove across the country and it was great to see so many Americans working to rebuild the highways thanks to President Obama's stimulus plan. The Republicans bankrupted America but we are getting the country back on track! Thanks, Merle!
Blazak...your a fucking idiot...its your tree hugging hippie frends that want to help all the others in the world and not America. Obama, dems, and the gop are ALL fucking up America. So dont blame one party when BIG Government is the problem.
Blakem713, maybe you failed civics class, but government is "we the people." The Republicans are the party of the rich. Their corporations, like Cheney's Halliburton, make billions off of sending working and poor people to war and sending jobs overseas. So you are either a member of the corporate elite or a complete moron. Wake the fuck UP!
my heart bleeds red white and blue .......as does every great american..........ill stand with any other man woman or child who wantes to who wants to help rebuild.
I agree with Merle.. having just came back from Iraq I think we need to focus our efforts at home with a national unemployment rate of10%+ and gas a $2.59/gal. Lets do what we need to do to get this great country of our back on its feet.
mpafy i bet you are some piece of shit fuck everyone else America is the best damn country in the world FUCK YOU from the heart of America The Midwest farmer.
I was always a big Merle fan, but I lost all respect for him with this song. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but it bothers me coming from the guy who did "fightin' side of me"
I thought both the "fightin side of me" and this song are contradicting but depending on who the person is and how they feel both songs can be very fitting. when merle did both of these songs he song what he thought.
Though I'm not the biggest country music fan, I think it's refreshing to hear someone step up and say this...yeah, let's take care of us first...and then we can do more for others later.
good to see Mr. Haggard was wise enough not to jump on the fake-patriotism and freedom fries republican bandwagon, like all the fake wannabe cowboys of modern nashville did.
Merle kicks darrel worley and toby keith's asses any day of the week!
I've served 26 years, escorted Kuwaiti tankers during the Iraq-Iran War, watched mines float past our ship during the Gulf War as we supported the ground campaing in 1991, spent a few weeks in Iraq, talked with fellow military who've served there, and even volunteered for duty over there. I suspect I've learned more than the reporters who stayed in the Green Zone hotels. I respect other opinions and proudly serve to protect free speech. Unfortunately, the anti-war folks don't do either.
I agree that Merle Haggard is an American icon. Great singer with strong emotions in every song. That said, I disagree with his political views on Iraq. Those that feign concern over the loss of 4,000 brave American military souls should recall the loss of nearly 3,000 American citizens on 11 September 2001. How many have we lost on American soil since taking the party to the bad guys' houses?
This man is an American ICON! Funny how right wingers don't mention the trillion spent in Iraq, over 4,000 dead American solders and all the wounded. All based on LIES! Now they want to wine about a trillion spent on America all which happened on Bush's watch. Remember him saying "The fundamental of the economy are sound"? That was another lie!!!!
i commented on this video a while ago and it sounds like to me that he is a true born californian democrat liberal love his music just not his views we cannot just abandon our post in iraq if we did that the terroists would crawl all over us but i dont care what anybody says we need to be in iraq its our duty as the #1 world power to protect freedom here and there and all these liberals are feeling sorry for the troops why they signed up for it it aint no damn draft it was their decision
liberate america first is right, man.Forget about the terrorists,we need to fear our own government. They're spending a trillion dollars of our money on every left wing organisation in the country and around the world.
I think you don't understand the intention of the song. He is talking about making America first and takeing care of us instead if rest of the world. Look at the shape our country is in and tell me he's wrong.
You resort to insults when you cant formulate a logical argument or provide evidence to support your assertions. You REALLY think Cuba's healthcare system is superior to ours? How many Canadians seek medical care here vs. vice versa? And Mexico? Examine the cancer survival rate (from 2008) in the US. Statistics rarely give an accurate portrayal of the complex subject and simply looking at statistics ignores another important issue-about which, you and I certainly disagree.
Leaving your head in the sand and refusing to face facts does not solve the issue. The US is 37th overall. There are more than 45 million Americans without any health care benefits at all. That's a disgrace. Why you want to applaud a disgrace is beyond me. 37th overall. 45 million without benefits. I don't care how many people go somewhere. LOOK AT THE FACTS 37TH OVERALL - 45 MILLION W/OUT INSURANCE.
I don't see healthcare as a right b/c that would mean that I view food, clothing, and shelter as rights since they are more pertinent to survival than healthcare. I dont expect the govt. to cover the costs of those things and I dont want them paying my medical bills either. Assuming that the US can simply adopt another countrys plan is unrealistic because our society is vastly different from any other. We need to look inward and find a solution that will work for AMERICANS.
The main problems facing our healthcare system are medical costs and insurance. No system is perfect, but we can find ways to address these issues without giving control to the federal govt. To quote Thomas Jefferson: as govt. grows, liberty decreases, meaning that, as Gerald Ford proclaimed: A govt. big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take from you everything you have. Govt. bureaucracy= complacency and ineffectiveness.
First, you don't know me, so your judgment of me, has no meaning. You seem to miss the MOST OBVIOUS point about what I said. We were ranked 37th eight years ago. A similar survey today would probably show us slipping even farther down. If you can show me any study that shows the US improving, I'd love it. But just saying a study is XX years old and implying it's no longer valid as a source, doesn't hold water. The rest of the world is aware of our rank, you apparently aren't.
I think you've already seen the latest results I've seen. If you have newer info, post it. I doubt it's any better. It could even be that Cuba, a nation that has been suffering for nearly 50 years under an illegal economic embargo. They were 39th then, and they spend less than 1% of what the US does. btw, the US pays more per capita for a health care that is 37th than almost any other nation.
Again, what are the latest results? The most recent info I can find is from 2000 which, by the way, weighted equality in healthcare treatment more heavily than quality of healthcare. In the WHO's 2000 report, the US ranked # 1 for quality of healthcare. Why do you think so many people seek medical care here? I agree that we need to address certain issues, namely cost and insurance, but adopting a socialized system will only multiply our problems.
Please reread my first sentence. If you're still having trouble understanding simple English, there's really nothing I can do. I would like to hear your definition of "so many people." I do know that many Canadians buy health insurance before visiting the US because everything costs a lot of money.
I can personally compare 3 separate systems in 3 different countries. Do you know any other system at all???
i agree with this song 100%. We are so busy going to help this country and that country but we forget about our own! What happened to the old saying " GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES"?
WE HAVE HOMELESS PROBLEM,HUNGER, CHILD ABUSE BUT YET WE GO HELP COUNTRIES PEOPLE WITH
THERE POLITICAL ISSUES!
FIX OUR PROBLEMS AND LET THE OTHER COUNTRIES FIGURE OUT THEIR OWN DAMN PROBLEMS. WE HAVE ENOUGH ISSUES AT HOME TO SOLVE!
Why is everyone ragging on Merle for asking us to come home for Iraq? Where do you people think the money is coming from? The 1+ trillion spent on killing could have been used for good.
I have enjoyed Merle Haggard's songs since I was a kid. But I found this one offensive. I have a son overseas. He knows the truth about what's going on, and he believes in it. Old Merle must be suffering from some form dementia in his old age. How sad. But when

Toyota alone employs directly almost 29,000 people and 164,000 indirectly; the company has made a record investment in this country for $18.3 billion among facilities, infrastructure, social programs, etc. So next time you see a Corolla...think of America.

Google it.

How many have we lost on American soil since taking the party to the bad guys' houses?
hns123192 2 years ago
This man is an American ICON! Funny how right wingers don't mention the trillion spent in Iraq, over 4,000 dead American solders and all the wounded. All based on LIES! Now they want to wine about a trillion spent on America all which happened on Bush's watch. Remember him saying "The fundamental of the economy are sound"? That was another lie!!!!

Statistics rarely give an accurate portrayal of the complex subject and simply looking at statistics ignores another important issue-about which, you and I certainly disagree.
guillem43 3 years ago
Leaving your head in the sand and refusing to face facts does not solve the issue. The US is 37th overall. There are more than 45 million Americans without any health care benefits at all. That's a disgrace. Why you want to applaud a disgrace is beyond me. 37th overall. 45 million without benefits. I don't care how many people go somewhere. LOOK AT THE FACTS 37TH OVERALL - 45 MILLION W/OUT INSURANCE.
Use your brain (if you still have one)
toeg1 3 years ago
I don't see healthcare as a right b/c that would mean that I view food, clothing, and shelter as rights since they are more pertinent to survival than healthcare. I dont expect the govt. to cover the costs of those things and I dont want them paying my medical bills either. Assuming that the US can simply adopt another countrys plan is unrealistic because our society is vastly different from any other. We need to look inward and find a solution that will work for AMERICANS.
guillem43 3 years ago
The main problems facing our healthcare system are medical costs and insurance. No system is perfect, but we can find ways to address these issues without giving control to the federal govt. To quote Thomas Jefferson: as govt. grows, liberty decreases, meaning that, as Gerald Ford proclaimed: A govt. big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take from you everything you have. Govt. bureaucracy= complacency and ineffectiveness.
guillem43 3 years ago
toeg1: Going back to your comment on the US being ranked 37 . . .
guillem43 3 years ago
gui,
First, you don't know me, so your judgment of me, has no meaning. The rest of the world is aware of our rank, you apparently aren't.
toeg1 3 years ago
So what is our current rank?
guillem43 3 years ago
gui,
I think you've already seen the latest results I've seen. If you have newer info, post it. I doubt it's any better. It could even be that Cuba, a nation that has been suffering for nearly 50 years under an illegal economic embargo. They were 39th then, and they spend less than 1% of what the US does. btw, the US pays more per capita for a health care that is 37th than almost any other nation.
toeg1 3 years ago
Again, what are the latest results? The most recent info I can find is from 2000 which, by the way, weighted equality in healthcare treatment more heavily than quality of healthcare. In the WHO's 2000 report, the US ranked # 1 for quality of healthcare. Why do you think so many people seek medical care here? I agree that we need to address certain issues, namely cost and insurance, but adopting a socialized system will only multiply our problems.
guillem43 3 years ago
gui,
Please reread my first sentence.
Ranking by ignorance is invalid.

I have enjoyed Merle Haggard's songs since I was a kid. But I found this one offensive. I have a son overseas. He knows the truth about what's going on, and he believes in it. Old Merle must be suffering from some form dementia in his old age. How sad. But when
