The weird thing about this song is that if you translate it into english (bearing in mind that a "Leiermann" is an "organgrinder") "do you want to grind your organ to my songs" ("willst zu meinen Liedern deine leier dre'n?") it has a very sexual meaning that is uncertain in the original german but which seems to fit, especially with this version it. Any comment especially from native German speakers (I'm English) would be welcome.

@sunhoney1uk Saying that there's any sexual undertone would be too far fetched in german atfirst sight, I guess. BUT "Deine Leier drehen" could refer to masturbating. Eventually I came up with something like "kurbeln, ("sich einen kurbeln"or "Kurbelkurt") which is somehow related to "drehen" in this particular context. I suppose, when it comes to attaching (new) sexual meanings to existing expressions, a language such as german can be very productive. :-D

@usuqamadiq in fact "brummen" really makes no sense with dogs (but bears), a more used word in this piece of art is "knurren", because growl can be translated in both ways and a dog can't make noises like a bear.

@1CTMB I agree to some extend, Schubert would have never thought of his music in such ways. And any skilfully trained musician will perform this piece better than Covenant on a technical level.

However, true immortal art will be reinterpreted anew throughout generations, and I feel that Covenant does an excellent job in appraising the old master. I think Schubert would have been very pleased to hear that 200 years later, youngsters still enjoy his music in some form or another.

Quasthoff isnt the one and only to sing it. Search for the Version of Fischer-Dieskau. He is one of the most considerable classical singers of the 20th century and at least as good as quasthoff, who is also a exceptionally gifted singer in my opinion.

Schuberts' style was that of pleasing tunes. He had an appitite for experimentation. He did not care about the craft of composition. He liked to try things not done before. So I would have to agree with MrHFAlucard. Although I do not believe he would had to been "goth". In the modern world I believe he would still had choosen this particular genre, and if not, then one close to it.

You´ve seen this from the wrong direction.

This song doesn´t go out from Schubert´s Leiermann, it goes out from Covenant`s "like tears in the rain" melody, and uses only Schubert´s text as a carrier.
