  • for years I never knew the other side of ELP beyong something like "Lucky Man" (which is a great song) on popular "rock" radio ... they only play the most popular songs - I can't really listen to any radio now since I can't stand the announcers' polished BS voices or the annoying loud ads.... so checking out youtube, one finds this stuff ... woah! This is a whole other realm - these guys were great musicians and Emerson was one of the greatest keyboardists in rock/jazz/classical IMHO!

  • Undisputable skills here !

But, to be honest, it's all too much for me. When I was watching this I kept hoping that he'd slow down somewhere and get into some harmonies that I could tune into ...

  • Took me a while a long while to understand backward beethoven, now I get it.

  • This (and the rest of the 1974 California Jam gig) is available on ELP's excellent "Beyond the Beginning" 2-DVD compilation. Check it out!

  • Back in the day I could barely relate to Keith Emerson"s backward Beethoven. Now I love it.

  • se ho iniziato a suonare il piano è grazie a lui :) Dio avrà sicuramente tutte le canzoni degli ELP nel suo MP3 :)

  • Bellissimo, l'ho veramente apprezzato. Però bisognerebbe sparare al cameraman.

  • I saw ELP in concert several times during the early '70s and usually found his solo piano sets to be the most amazing (better than throwing knives into his Moog or stabbing his organ keyboard to create a tone cluster to improvise around!). Eventually I moved on to mostly classical music but it's still great to hear/see these clips from the past. Great times!!

  • @eurisko618 :) if you want to play moog well, you obviously have to be good to play piano :) . Piano is the mother of his song

  • @darthgrillus96 Then again, the Moog is more than just a keyboard instrument. It takes a good understanding of generating analog wave-forms, modulations and other electro-musical concepts to get all the sounds just the way you like them. We had one where I used to work and it was a lot of fun to play with. But I agree the piano is the king of instruments. (One might say the organ is the obsessive-compulsive dictator of keyboard instruments...:-)

  • wtf? he's playing ragtime, classical, jazz, and blues all at the same time!

  • sounds like emerson has had a blood transfusion with art tatum!!!

  • Well, I have never played the keyboards myself ( I play guitar, but I don't read music) and I am still in awe of Keith Emerson. 35 years since I bought my first album and still can't get enough.

  • Every video of Emerson Lake and Palmer is an unique relic.

  • A guy from the "prog" rock band Quasar emailed me ,telling me that Emerson likes to "pretend"he's a virtuoso.Emerson wasn't even 30 yet when he performed this.I saw his solo years later in 1992 and he was even 10 times better, apparently he'd been practicing 8 hours a day or more for the previous 15 years(which inevitably gave him his carpel tunnel shortly thereafter).Quasar's been around since 1979,has anyone heard of them?I didn't think so.The fantasies people will tell themselves!!!

  • One of the Masters of the piano of Rock Era....one of the best I have seen in concert and I have seen many in my 55 years. I grew up with jazz parents and performers....;-)

  • Pure Bebop. Who knew!

  • Great piano solo. Remindes me of Oscar Peterson. No small task.

  • MrLagunapete, thank you for stating the absolute obvious. What the hell is the matter with people today? How is it that this solo doesn't go down with some of the greatest works of all time? Look at his hands on this song. If you know anything about keyboard, you will know that this is a brilliant masterpiece on piano. I have stated before, and I will say it again... Keith Emerson is the finest musician in rock and roll history. Thank you for helping our cause, MrLagunapete.

  • @weednlogic Comments like these literally make my day. As a minor keyboardist I must say that his use of ever-shifting time signatures, 32nd and 64th notes, and his constantly changing rhythms create a kind of music that seems to avoid all cliches that plague most musicians. Seeing him and Greg Lake live in L.A was truly a spectacle to behold...... and being one of the few kids there also made it a more unique experience....

  • @weednlogic Oh, I meant "As a minor keyboardist myself"; I didn't mean to imply that Keith is a minor keyboardist. That would be contradictory of my later statements, now, wouldn't it? And I'm not a big fan of using doublethink ;D

  • As a keyboardist, fan, and speaking of musicianship in general, I would have to say that this solo is pretty much about the most incredible thing I have heard in my life. No man known to the best of my knowledge can come close to touching this solo, dare they even approach it... Emerson's hands should be clad in gold.

  • It's painfully obvious here's why they were and always will probably be the greatest group of all time, but do you think ELP has a chance to make it into the rock hall of fame?Of course not,he's way too good for those idiots.

  • Lengendary

  • è un piacere guardarlo...

  • Fantastic mastery! A stupendous performance!

  • Mindblowing!

  • Really Nice!
