@stonethk yes, this is Fujian White Crane boxing. Master Huang was the classmate under Cheng Man-ching of two masters that I learned Tai Chi Chuan from for many years, Masters Abraham Liu and Benjamin Lo. This clip shows true soft power, the result of a lifetime of cultivation: the mastery of two internal arts.
Its great that this kind of thing is on the 'internets'.
I sent this vid to my girlfriend who is oriental so she could see a true master, and she said her mom would play the song playing for this vid all the time when she was very young. And she asked me to try to find out the title or the artist of this music.
GM Huang was performing the last set of a series of 5 of the Calling White Crane movement. The voice recording is not audible here or else we would hear the sounds he made. The sounds are an essential part of the training in the movement. The original movement is still being practised in Fuzhou, China where the school recently celebrated its 100 years anniversary on 15 December 2007 with international participants particularly from Japan. It is more physically demanding than Taiji.
Well, there are the T'ai Chi people who study the form and ponder on muscle memorization or learn to sense minute movements, and then there are the kind who for some reason think they can shoot fireballs out of their eyes. I have taken T'ai Chi for a few years now and my balance has improved dramatically as well as my improvisation. Don't be frightened away by the crazies who think that they can one day break a brick wall with a pelvic thrust.
If you see the older ( pre communist ) tai chi, it is much more martial. Also, applying the techniques can only be learned by someone who has mastered FIGHTING WITH TAI CHI. Most people who master it ( which is a really incredible thing to do) don't learn from masters from a fighting tradition. I studied with a sifu with that knowledge and it is different. But that can be said for most martial arts nowadays. You only learn fighting by fighting. Those traditional forms dont protect the head.
I see your point and I agree. You do become a better fighter by fighting, and I recommend that people fight to test themselves and what they've learned. However, doing the forms over again makes movement more instinctual. Also, I admit I do not know the application for every move in that video, but I saw several that could be used to deflect blows to the head.
I agree with you. The training influences greatly the outcome of your applications. If all you do is form, then you may not be as well prepared for a fight as you should. Your body may not be conditioned enough to react and withstand a fight. I think the forms are choreographed sets meant as a tool to compile and remember the individual movements. Sometimes that need to be applied differently to work.
@kagyu1 well u can learn fighting just by practising taijiquan. westerners have almost no profound knowledge of "qi" therefore they threw away such things.
The fact that we make a specific choice doesn't mean that some one else who made an other choice made a bad choice. Why is it so difficult to just respect other human beings?
to the naked eye.. this is just a plain exercise for really old people.... i can't see outside that box yet.. like many other people who know nothing of tai chi
It is an excercise for old people, but it doesn't mean it's not a great excercise for us as well! ^_^ It's not so much about seeing outside of any box from what I learned, but rather giving anything a chance and take careful notice of how it changes you. Master Chen Man Ching spoke concerning of those who never seem to grasp the concept and said simply, "They lack faith. Faith in the form, and faith in the teacher."
Gibson: It is essential that anyone practicing external martial arts also practice a soft style too. Otherwise, energy dispersion will kill you at a very young age.
There are additional benefits to be had by the young MA practicing the soft side. If you ONLY practice the hard side, you will remain appallingly weak, lacking a root, and your mind will freeze when in combat I would recommend practicing 4 hours of soft for every hour of hard. If not, you will not reach your potential and life short
I absolutely and enthusiastically agree with you. I did not mean to imply that harder styles are better. I know through experience that a softer style (I mean T'ai Chi) can improve balance, health, and even posture.
And you can do four hours? Wow...I am almost completely exhausted after one hour. The great thing though is that Chen Man Ching says that five minutes upon waking and five minutes before sleeping is effective enough for great health. But, I'd like to be able to last four hours :)
"Sorry but...boxers, kickboxers, and mixed martial artists all disprove your claim that heavily practicing external martial arts will kill you young. "
haha mixed martial arts disprove that claim? the sport hasn't even been around long enough for its practitioners to reach old age...and old by western standards isn't really that old compared to what one could expect from disciplined internal practice.
It´s great to see this form !! As long as I know it comes from Ming He Quan, a White Crane Style that emphasized internal energy. Hope that someone has a video of the other forms, but we´re lucky to watch Mr huang

@austinproject - If you are still wondering what is the title, it's Sakura . A Japanese music and song. It was also sung in Chinese/Mandarin.
