  • Yep, the Class 50's are(were) great, but so is that classic original livery on the 125..

it was good to be reminded again after all this time. Nice upload, thanks

  • Superb. The video made my day. What year was it?

  • @meirion500 1985 (Says in the description) :)

  • Another thumbs up here. I remember the great days of BR but I had no camera so videos like this are a godsend.

  • yeahhhhhhhh!!! i miss the old days of br when they didn't give a shit as long as trains ran! i bet the rule book just said 'fucking turn up - we don't care how pissed you are!' drivers raced each other and the public enjoyed some decent thrash! when i was a guard at piccadilly we used to race virgin expresses out of stockport towards picc on 323's - mild compared to this!!!

  • Listen to that Valenta scream, beauty!

  • Awesome footage, had to admit my money was on the HST though! Top video!

  • That was getting good...the 50 seemed to gain for a short while, but the 125 must have been teasing, man did he put his foot down.

  • Love this vid a nice proper race between a 125 and 50. And amazingly the 50 starts to gain.....what shame for the 40mph restriction for the curve :-)

  • @FlyingEnglishman 148.5 mph

  • Excellent video :-)

  • Nice to hear west country accents in a deltic cab!

  • thanks for this upload, a pleasure to watch!

  • Excellent!!!!!

  • Awesome awesome awesome!!!! Thanks for posting, and thanks to whoever found the footage.

  • what makes me chuckle that they both look like they racing down the paignton branch ( i know there not but nowadays the train go on the right side of the 50 dont they apart form nice footage wish it stayed that way =)

  • What a fantastic video. Lovely : )

  • Lovely video, thankyou. Such a shame it's all in the past. Privatisation ruined the railways.

  • Good video. I like the driver asking: Do want me to catch him or let him past?.

  • Real trains and lots of semaphore signals. It's amazing that the railways still had most of their character as recently as this. Pity about their state now.

  • what do you mean pity about heir state now?

  • Mostly the lack of character - semaphore signals look much better (practicality doesn't come into my views!), and nowdays it's pokey, cramped multiple units everywhere where once we had real trains.

  • when you approach newton abbot station their is a big raised platform with about 8 semaphore signals but i do agree i like old diesel locos the most!

  • Isn't that a Railscene video filmed by Jeremy English?

  • Yes it is. Nice to see it again

  • Take the 40mph speed limit away and the vac would of kept up.

  • how do you work that out? its 40mph on both lines. plus top speed of HST is 125mph, the HST acceleration would out do a class 50 any day

  • Much of Newton Abbot has changed! The semophores, signal box and many of the points have been long gone!

  • Stunning! Thanks for posting.

  • absolutely awesome video

i am suprised the 50 kept up so well till he blew his horn and the 43 walked it

  • The horn was the Aws Btw

  • Fantastic film!

  • amazing film! should be in the national archives.

  • lovely vid, when Newton Abbot had real trains and real signals. How much has the lineside vegetation grown!!!!

  • Great footage!

  • Nice one, cheers.

  • Back when Newton Abbot had a proper layout. Classic stuff!!

  • There is some serious vac thrash here! *****

  • excellent stuff, it was close till the hst found its legs!!!

  • 5 stars vid !!!, bye bye , gustavo Argentina

  • Some absolutely classic stuff; one English Electric Class 50, up against two Valenta powered HST Cars? Quite a contest there. Thanks for sharing this priceless five star footage!

  • AWSOME 5 STARS

  • Ace bit of footage there! Many thanks for sharing. Favourited and 5*.

  • Many thx to all for the great comments. Cheers

  • Great video!

  • 55022 wasn't trying, it would of left the HST in a cloud of clag if it was on full power!

  • Yeh without a doubt the 50 is a beast

  • Class 55, class 50 sounds like a hoover!

  • aye tru indeed, out of the 2 i love the HST the 55 is a beast and the 50 is cool i must say (with exeption to a few eg 175 and the ones that NOONE likes) i love all trains/locos

  • Is it a 50 or a 55?

  • The cab thatu the camera is in is a class 55.

  • It is a class 50 50022

  • Whoops, sorry abou that, slip of the mind !

  • @mststv 55's have a bonnet at the front - so clearly this is not the case

  • great vid 5*

  • An excellent and unique piece of vintage footage David. Well done and thanks for sharing and to Dafydd (Loonies 125) for bringing it to my attention...5*..Bob

  • i meant 50s!

  • awsome hsts rule but so do deltics!

  • If only that were to happen now..

  • Fantastic vid mate! 5/5 and favouriting! It's great to see vids of what our railways used to look like!
