I really want to get this for my mom and myself, but the wifi issues worry me. And to say that I'm a tablet/Android noob would be an understatement. I want a suitable substitute for an iPad (I don't Apple anything) that's user friendly.
question: could you retest some of the speeds with the new ics updates? I've heard that they didn't start truly using all the speed the quadcore (well technically 5core) used till the new ICS came out.
@TheMasochrist We have tested the tablets with the new version of Quadrant which is more optimized for the quadcore. We have the new numbers in our full written review, see the link in video description. The Prime is getting updates often, we are testing it with all the new updates.
Lisa, I was wondering if Yahoo/Yahoo Messenger be installed on this tablet? Would I also be able to play Yahoo games like Dominoes (I mostly play that on the computer) on this as well?
I really wanted to get this prime on hand...but i doubt on their wifi and gps issues. Do this prime(uk version) still have the issues needed to be fixed??
Just brought it, mainly because of your review! VERY EXCITED to get it! I could not find it anywhere it was sold out everywhere, until I went to Office Depot.com and found one!
Hey Lisa just wanted to check back in with you about the Prime as i said i would when i received mine. Well ive had it for about a week now and I LOVE IT and ur review of it was spot on...this is a great machine (writing this from the Prime). Thanks for ur vid!!!
Exelent review Lisa, as usually. I have o say that i was expecting more fluid web scrolling from a 4ad core tegra but still a very desirable gadget./ Exelente review Lisa, como de costumbre. Debo decir que esperaba un web scrolling mas fluído de un quad core de tegra. Aún así es un aprarato muy deseable.
@MobileTechReview Overall I like this review and your points in certain aspects but the version of shadowgun your playing is the one for all android devices not Tegra 3.
The speaker is good but not the best when compared to certain other tablets
I have been doing some intensive research on tablets and thanks to your reviews I am going with the Asus EEE Slate EP121. I wanted a bigger screen for by android games, but I can just hook it up to my TV thru HDMI.
I know but i needed a tablet that can run AutoCad and a few other programs that I have. As I stated I can just hook my phone to a TV for a bigger screen.
This is just a fantastic review! You are so knowledgeable, and you give us the whole story. A lot of these reviews just sugar coat everything, and this tablet is so great, and there's nothing anything wrong with it. Don't get me wrong, I'm probably going to buy this, but I want to know what I'm getting into. I will be watching your YouTube vids and visiting your website!
i have been up in the air as to which to get (the xyboard or the prime) i think i am going with moto. a few reasons, the design of this one is a major flaw, if it's not comfortable to hold i will get agitated. also even though i am not necessarily going to use this for navigation, the fact that is has connection issues at all bugs me. To me a more well designed tegra 2 tablet is much better than a rushed tegra 3. even though the xyboard has no sd card slot, the usb host kinda makes up for it.
Hello! Very good review and learned a loot more about the device. I have looked at the prime for a while and think i am going to get one, but i have a question. How is the prime to play movie in 720p or 1080p, from the web, youtube or a video on the device, does it lagg or is it going smooth and have no problem?
This is a really good review. I'm debating between this and the Thrive. I'm torn. I like the IPS and the specs. I have some concerns with the design. Exposure from the ports as mentioned in the beginning is a concern. Wish they had at least one USB port (makes the keyboard less tempting - LOL). Incidentally, I just learned about the ASUS USB Kit which is essentially a USB adapter that connects to the dock port. It's back-ordered at Best Buy;I need to try it out before I make a final decision.
You're welcome, Lisa! I am typing this on my brand new Tab 8.9 and I am loving it. The size, weight and ergonomics are all just right. Loving the nice round corners. Btw Lisa you are my one stop shop whenever I need solid accurate reviews. You helped me with my Lenovo U260, the Tab 8.9 and soon the U300s! Plus countless others. You are an invaluable resource, keep it up! We can't thank you enough for what you do.
id guess that quadrant, and most benchmark software, doesnt take advantage of the 4 cores. Since this is the only quadcore tablet out dont expect developers to rush out and make their benchmarking apps for hardware friendly....even though they should
lol xyboard who releases a new tablet with barely any additional horsepower and then try to charge 529....... youd be stupid not to go with the transformer prime
This review is spot on, and I actually got my Prime on 12/23/11 and just sold it. The ergonomics are just awful. It would leave holes in my palms. That tapering corner design is terrible and it needs to GO. I sold it off and will be getting a Galaxy Tab 8.9 which is a JOY in the hands. The Prime is nice but just way too hard to hold for it's bulk. Also the power button is impossible to press. It's very annoying. As for the rest of the review, I agree on all counts. Wifi and GPS are weak.
Hi Lisa, I believe so much in android but I can bear the lag and the fact that applications crash all the time on my xoom. Do applications respond on the prime smoothly when scrolling as they do on the ipad?
IDK about cameras in phones and tablets. I have the 8mp on my Bionic. About half the time if it focuses right, it'll come out with a digital-camera quality great picture that is really nice and sharp. The next pic, for no apparent reason can look like it was taken by a piece of fruit. Video always looks great tho...
WOW I've been watching a lot of reviews for new tablets and you are by FAR the best. You've really done your homework and understand the tech. Plus the fact that you've used all the major benchmark utils and thourghly tested all of the features that I would testat if I had it in my hand. Everything from HD video output to animation speed cpu clocking. Thanks a lot!
@BigAsSmellyDog in raw cpu power better . In gpu department its worse than ipad2 .
If you want to run almost every video and audio format out of the box without converting ,itunes etc. + many other android exlusive features then the tablet is for you .
I've heard that Asus have just rolled out a firmware fix for the GPS (+other fixes). Have you received this on your unit and if so do you know if this has improved the GPS at all?
Hey Lisa quick question, I'm looking to buy a tablet and I'm leaning toward the Asus brand, which would you recommend the Asus transformer or the Asus Prime?
Lisa, you spoke briefly about the wi-fi issues and stated that it was "average," and not the best among tablets, but could you possibly expand on this issue a little more for me please? How well does the device work, comparatively speaking, one room away from a router or maybe two and three rooms away? How about if the router is upstairs and I'm downstairs? Could you post internet wi-fi speed test comparisons? I know a lot of people would appreciate it from a credible site like yours. Thanks
I'm curious if the GPS might work better if you had a mi-fi on and in the car with you? Of course doing that might drain your data allotment pretty fast.
I'm not too worried about the TV remote and switching audio to TVs and stuff like that because frankly, I'm going to use this exclusivlely for stuff like Netflix and Web Browsing and games and stuff along those lines. This tablet is the one for me... Much better then that crappy XYboard.
Like any Android tablet same things all over again and again. Only thing that is good about Android tablets and phones is companies only improve on making them faster but they never improve on better hardware outputs and software. Overall Androids are way to over priced and can not compete with any Apple Iphone or Ipad. Lisa love all your videos and revues Mark Las Vegas Nevada.
@xguitar123 there isnt one single statement in your comment that is true or makes any sense at all^^ :) sry dude but wh00t?
Problem with the Prime: It was rushed to the market to make the holidays. The software sucks and is full of bugs. Everywhere else on the world it gets released in mid january with Android 4.0. It'll probably feel like another tablet then. Apart from that its a wonderful tablet especially with the dock.
@clouds5 Just to prove that all Android products are bad I own the Motorola Zoom tablet and it run slower than an Ipad 2. Videos run in slide view mode software apps run at only half the speed compared to the Ipad 2 witch is flawless in all aspects of what a tablet should be an Apple Ipad not an Android.
@xguitar123 Ah so if one android product sucks all android products suck? Your logic doesnt work man.
I believe you, the xoom sucks. I never owned one but i heard that all over the place. But lets talk video playback: On the ipad you have to convert everything into the right format or it wont even play. On the Transformer Prime you just put the .avi or .divx or .xvid file on the tablet and hit go. Huge advantage over the ipad if you like to watch movies on your tablet.
@clouds5 The xoom didn't suck. It had probably the worst calibrated display of any honeycomb tablet but that was about it as far as shortcomings...well that and that LTE hardware upgrade fiasco. As far as tegra powered tabs go it was among the quickest, still probably has the most responsive screen, and when it comes to the Galaxy Tab and Transformer at least it blew the competition away in build quality.
Not much point of a tablet that plays bluray movies, since there is little memory. I want one that I can surf the web and watch dvd quality movies. I'm thinking the first transformer is the one to get, since the wifi is better then this one.
@BrokenBjartur We will add full specs and a lot more info in our full written review. We will post a link to that as soon as it goes live. Stay tuned!
nice review and another nice tablet from Asus~ the only thing i dont like bout it is the audio jack... its in the most dodgy spot of the tablet.. imagine when its dock in its keyboard station.. and the audio jack is on the top right of the tablet.. wish they would've make another audio jack and speakers on the keyboard.. that'll be great~ thx for the review~ B-)
what a let down i really wanted to get this but its not living up to the hype it seems. i guess i will be waiting to get last years tablets for 200-250 range or wait and see what the next over priced ipad will be all about.
you need to have that or else you'd have nowhere to hold onto and will be pressing random buttons on the edge of the screen. Unless of course you have a dock in which case you wouldn't have that same problem.
Hey great review but you should protect the serial number of your device. People have bad tendency to use other people's info on things : / happy holidays by the way.
This thing is definitely the hottest tablet on the market currently. And it will even shine a lot more with the ICS update and it may be the first tablet to get it.
Interesting issue with the GPS - sounds like they need to rework the backing to make it more transmitter / reciever freindly. I'm looking forward to trying one out in the store when it's released in the UK (12th Jan here I believe).
Lastly do you have any ideas when the Galaxy tab 7.7 is due for release? I like the smaller form factor but know one has any idea when / if it's going to be released (I think including Samsung).
This will only be good with ics as that fully supports the quad core and hw acceleration etc. Honeycomb is pathetic. Have ics alpha on my xoom and it flies!
for $499 32GB, this thing is cheap knowing that it is a quad core and has great design. Normal tablets with that memory size is usually 100$ more expensive.
wow this was a huge disappointment the way you talk about it. I was so hyped for this tab i was going to pick it up as my first tablet and laugh at my friends with their ipads, i guess im still on the look out for a tablet god dam i knew i shud have picked up the transformer when it was 250 im hating myself right now :(.
@frankiebeans20 well, mobiletechreview is the only one who seems to not like the transformer prime. Prime is still the best android tablet especially when you buy it with a dock.
This tablet will have high appeal among weight conscious Android tablet users, looking for a boost in speed and also increased productivity you can only get with docked keyboards at this point. Admittedly the T3 is based on some tech that will be improved, BUT it is proven technology. ICS on A15, two very young technologies, is likely to be pretty dicey in the early stages as things naturally are.
Thank you Lisa on a great video. I will pass on this. I did have an early promotional Prime with a weak wifi signal. I was very surprised at how laggy it was when typing in the browser. Tegra 3 is speedier than Tegra 2 but this wasn't the second coming that some touted it to be IMHO. It had a weird brightness thing too where if I went to another app etc, the brightness would go darker. I sold it and will look forward to the beasts that will come in the spring.
Dual core is a nice safety net on Android that keeps it running smoothly, but the benefits of quad are dubious IMO. Faster dual cores based on Cortex A15s will likely have a bigger advantage than a slower clocked quad, as most developers are still going for the lowest common denominators, ie single cores. The fifth low power core is interesting, but 28nm and improved gating designs will probably eliminate that battery advantage too. You could make a quad A15, but a faster dual would sill win.
Lisa you should do a review of the Prime with Ice Cream Sandwich :-)

U R The best
just question
Motorola XYBoard or Asus Transformer Prime?
how much point give these two tablet out of 10 & What would be your choice?
thanks:)
kh42601100 1 month ago
Not much point of a tablet that plays bluray movies, since there is little memory. I want one that I can surf the web and watch dvd quality movies. I'm thinking the first transformer is the one to get, since the wifi is better then this one.

You should add some text to the video when mentioning specs and/or benchmarks.

nice review and another nice tablet from Asus~ the only thing i dont like bout it is the audio jack... its in the most dodgy spot of the tablet.. imagine when its dock in its keyboard station.. and the audio jack is on the top right of the tablet.. wish they would've make another audio jack and speakers on the keyboard.. that'll be great~ thx for the review~ B-)

you need to have that or else you'd have nowhere to hold onto and will be pressing random buttons on the edge of the screen.

Thanks Lisa. Great review as usual.

Is it only me or is this display one of the worst I've seen yet on a tablet!!!!
LinkinPark3r 1 month ago
for $499 32GB, this thing is cheap knowing that it is a quad core and has great design. Normal tablets with that memory size is usually 100$ more expensive.
akocern03 1 month ago
wow this was a huge disappointment the way you talk about it. I was so hyped for this tab i was going to pick it up as my first tablet and laugh at my friends with their ipads, i guess im still on the look out for a tablet god dam i knew i shud have picked up the transformer when it was 250 im hating myself right now :(.
frankiebeans20 1 month ago
@frankiebeans20 well, mobiletechreview is the only one who seems to not like the transformer prime. Prime is still the best android tablet especially when you buy it with a dock.

thank god i sold my android tablet in time, cuz it really sucks

This tablet will have high appeal among weight conscious Android tablet users, looking for a boost in speed and also increased productivity you can only get with docked keyboards at this point. Admittedly the T3 is based on some tech that will be improved, BUT it is proven technology. ICS on A15, two very young technologies, is likely to be pretty dicey in the early stages as things naturally are.
trevorpinnocky 1 month ago
Thank you Lisa on a great video. I will pass on this. I did have an early promotional Prime with a weak wifi signal. I was very surprised at how laggy it was when typing in the browser. Tegra 3 is speedier than Tegra 2 but this wasn't the second coming that some touted it to be IMHO. It had a weird brightness thing too where if I went to another app etc, the brightness would go darker. I sold it and will look forward to the beasts that will come in the spring.
CandysAllMediaReview 1 month ago
Dual core is a nice safety net on Android that keeps it running smoothly, but the benefits of quad are dubious IMO. Faster dual cores based on Cortex A15s will likely have a bigger advantage than a slower clocked quad, as most developers are still going for the lowest common denominators, ie single cores. The fifth low power core is interesting, but 28nm and improved gating designs will probably eliminate that battery advantage too. You could make a quad A15, but a faster dual would sill win.
