I don't think drug "treatment" is a good solution either, better than jail though. It's time to end the war on drugs and send our troops home from jail.
The real issue is creating a cheap labour force in order to compete with China. Because of our human rights record, we can't force "non-criminals" to work for $7.00 a day, but we can demand that our prison population does. China pays it's workers $17.00 a month, has a terrible human rights record, and thus doesn't need to put people in prison in order to be economically competitive with western developed nations.
The dumb ass neo conservative Harper/reformers are a complete embarrassment to Canada.
They will enact all these failed US policies because Harper is a moron and for profit prisons is the only thing he can come up with for a jobs strategy. What an idiot Harper is, the only people dumber than these hick cons are the dunces that voted for them. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
No worse than the Liberals before them. Every party has to please their supporters. The Liberals have the "guns scare me" or "poor me" crowd and the Conservatives have the "drugs are bad, m'kay" crowd.
The difference is, the Conservatives would rather spend money on prisons for indicted criminals, whereas the Liberals would rather spend money on lists of guns sitting in peoples closets.
I'd rather criminals be locked up over knowing if my neighbor owns a rifle or not.
Yes but what about those that have DUI, or Hit & Run causing death or long term injuries. Punishment must fit the crime, otherwise it's a slap in the face for the victims.
@kfix2007 So let me get this straight. We're going to kill a criminal because the criminal killed someone. And this is supposed to send the message that killing isn't right?
isnt this the same "government" that said the arrest of hundreds of Canadians for a non-existant law and the countless other breaches of the "police act" wasn't worth investigating?
nothing to see here, move along....
incidentally, I am actually impressed with this CBC report. wtf !?
This is somehow a "new" idea - that recidivism drops when criminals are given treatment options, rather than just thrown in jail with other criminals?
Conservatives cling so desperately to outdated, historically incorrect idealism when it comes to crime and incarceration.
WHO’S BEING PAID TO GET YOU TO SUPPORT THE RIGHT ,Over past 4 years Murdoch’s U.S.-based News Corp.including FOX made money on income taxes. Having earned $10.4 billion in profits, News Corp. would be expected to pay $3.6 billion at 35 percent corporate tax rate. Instead, it collected $4.8 billion in income tax refunds, nearly all from the U.S. government.

Prisons are an easy way for private business to steal more of the peoples' money and justify it "because it protects YOU". If it's not in the best interest of people in and out of prison we know it doesn't work.
Prison conditions are horrendous, getting a job after prison time is next to impossible, living in the outside world is too traumatic. The world is cruel and people in our courts and prisons are, sometimes, the only kindness a prisoner has ever known.
help heal people with addictions, instead of jailing them..... i like this idea.... this will help improve situation for everyone, less cost to rehabilitate, and less crime. this judge on this video has it right.
If it weren't for the criminal, there would be less need for government financed prisons, courts, barristers, government departments, etc.
This would put many highly paid people in positions of power and authority, unemployed.
Therefore, it is imperative of government to make more laws, and more stringent regulations, that create more criminals, from their own population, to help fight the unemployment of its appointed officials, and code enforcers. Eventually cities will become the prisons.
thanks for the video, have made fav and thumbs up hope it help get noticed, canadians are asleep, did a vid where stephen harper has given away our sovereignty to homeland security for trade rights, its called (canada loses sovereignty to homland security)

@1ElectroDan "This is somehow a "new" idea - that recidivism drops when criminals are given treatment options"
It's a frequently repeated fraud. Criminal harm always increases when punishment is zero or close to zero. It's human nature no matter what.
That doesn't mean treatment can't be attempted but if punishment is near-zero treatment is also ineffective, 100% assured outcome.

@tomuchbabble "Republicans have blocked every attempt by Obama to stimulate jobs."
wrong. Obama's Jeff Immelt, Jobs Czar and CEO of GE, is sending as many jobs to India as possible.
Presidents do not, can not and will not stimulate jobs. It's impossible.
