I have an xps m1330, I love it, just hoping that my graphics card doesnt fry!! Im installing ubuntu right now as I type this using Wubi. Will my Bios still be the same and my hardware run the same? I need the fan to stay the way it is so the graphics card stays cool. I have the A14 BIOS
If you meant will your BIOS be the same after installing Ubuntu, then yes. The BIOS is stored in a flash chip on the motherboard. The operating system is stored on the hard-drive. To change the BIOS you need to flash the BIOS chip. Believe me when you're flashing the BIOS you'll know. You'll get lots of warnings before hand telling you not to plug out the laptop or remove battery etc. Enjoy Ubuntu! (PS hardware may not run the same after first installing Ubuntu, you may need to install drivers)
I guess it is too late for you, but I recommend to use the normal method to install ubuntu and not wubi, that though it is a little easier, hardware may not be supported as good as with the normal installation.
use wubi. very simple to install ubuntu with vista or xp. no need for any partitions. try it out. just have a copy of iso in vista partition or have a bootable cd, u r good to go. just uninstall it from add or remove programs from windows.
I just got out of a conversation with a Dell XPS rep asking why the 8400 isn't in the Ubuntu version and they said that there isn't a driver yet. I linked them here... Needless to say, I didn't get another response from them.
Sweet setup. Have any issues with the fan running high constantly like reported on the Ubuntu site or has it been corrected yet?
The Dell rep was correct, dell does not have a 8400GS driver, but Nvidia does have thier own driver for the 8400GS Graphics card, you just have to enable the restricted drivers setting in ubuntu.
As for the fan, i havent noticed anything when compared to windows XP. (although i have noticed that they both run a little bit louder then when i am runnign windows vista ultimate.)
However, Ubuntu does have pretty crappy battery life. This is about 2 hours when compared to vista's 4+ hours.
I know that, I think its a pretty shit thing to claim they don't have a driver ready when nvidia could provide it now instead.
The power management is something that is being worked on for 8.04 (again. it was supposed to be improved in 7.10). Looks like we will be waiting yet again for Canonicle/Ubuntu to get that fixed again.
Anyone want my Vista key when I get my m1330? I'll probably post it here when it comes in.
haha thats the tradeoff with having a 13" notebook, the 8400GS is good for things like compiz fusion, watching HD video, windows aero, etc. But in terms of gaming, its really only as powerful as a 7300, enough for last generation games, such as FEAR and UT2004. So i'm not exactly going to play crysis on this thing, I use my desktop for that kind of stuff :)
will the Nvidia geforce 8400 work when ubuntu 8.10 is installed? or do i have to manually install it :/ ?

Do games and programs run on ubuntu?
DerMeister2007 3 years ago
Yeah, but to run Windows programs you download a free program called Wine. I have everything installed in that (MS Office 2007, Photoshop CS2, etc.)
