Just for you door knobs out there, to become a door gunner, you have to be infantry, second, you have to have a HIGH asvab score. When you become a crew member aboard an aircraft, you also have to perform maintenance on that aircraft....daily! By the way, during the Vietnam conflict, door gunners had the lowest life expectancy rate out of any position in the military. And the hard part is that when you shoot, the rotor wash effects the trajectory of your rounds, so it takes practice.
Brother, forgive me for my rant! Trust me, lord we had to inprovise with crap dating back to EARLY Vietnam, smelling like mold. At first we were told were going to get the mini-guns...burp, and then they gave us M-60D's that were packed in cosmoline since vietnam and took two days to clean. I pray that they are giving you the needed equipment. As a doorgunner, as well as you today, always improvise. Necessity is the mother of invention. Get in touch with Ft. Rucker, they'll want to hear.
Well when I was in, we were more screwed over than you guys are now. We were considered extremely low priority when it came to training. If your birds are at Pope, you'd be amazed what you can get from bench-stock... or at least when I was in. My only word is to improvise. And believe me when the guys from Ft. Rucker come around, you better speak up because they want to hear what you have to say in a heart-beat.
