Besides they still have what people want: large, imposing SUVs and trucks like the Escalade and F-150 and in the end that alone will save them.

An annoying thing toyota does is on their batteries. They put a "indicator" light on your batteryand is advertised by the dealers to tell you, the owner of the vehicle, whether or not your battery is "good". FALSE.
In every battery there are multiple cells with plates dividing it all. That little "indicator" only measures the electrolyte level of one cell of the battery, while the other 7 cells remain untested. Therefore you could have a problem in cell 1, yet that light on cell 3 says ok.
I had one of those Ford f350 diesels brand new in '93. In a year and a half it was in the shop 13 times. 3 injection pumps, 2 air conditioning compressors, 2 split radiators, 4 serpintine belts, 2 sets of pulleys, steering linkage failure, and anti lock brake faiure. I traded in a 1981 Toyota Hi-lux 4x4 for the Ford. That Toyota gave me over 250,000 miles, and the only thing I replaced was a clutch at 130,000. I dumped the F350 for a Tacoma 4x4 in '96, and I still have it today. Runs great!

With the fact that everyone has finally got fuel injection down, except for Nissan, cars run pretty damn well overall.
Nissan is the only company to use sidefeed fuel injectors, which clog and leak easily.
What kills automobiles is the lack of maintenance. People who own domestics tend to beat on their cars more, and not maintain them as much; perfect recipe for automobile failure.
The reason why the United States auto companies are swirling in the toilet, is because of the UAW, environmental restrictions, and US cars are not worth, what they sell for. And, if the congress thinks that greener cars are the answer for the big 3problems, their dumber than they look.
The US automaker's CEOs share in about 5% of the blame and the UAW about another 5%. The other 90% of the blame lies with Congress and CAFE. It must really suck to go Washington and then have to take part in dog and pony show put on by a major source of your problems. I wish a few of these CEOs would go on a easter egg hunt, find a pair, and then watch Howard Hughes' congressional hearings. Hughes never took that $hit.

Manufacturers are only going to build whats in demand and there was no shortage of people buying SUV's(that get 10mpg) on loans they couldn't afford to go along with mortages they couldn't afford thinking their jobs would be around forever when job security was going out the window.
Been a while since you read Consumer Reports? A 2005 JD Power and Associates 3 year survey rated Ford and Chevy just above average. But as the article "Fact check: Are American cars really that bad?" at CNN Money put it, "The problem is that "pretty good" has become "not quite good enough" in a world where quality standards have been raised so high and which many consumers still have bad memories of General Motors and Ford cars that have failed them in the past."
It's not the taxpayer's fault that america can't produce cars profitably...most of that is because of the federal reserve inflation machine and the rest is over-regulation of industry

You could say that they relied on the SUV balloon too long, but even Nissan is getting trouble from their Armada. Perhaps Chevy's sudden surge in research into green power is why they have no reserves. Right now Chevy offers more green vehicle options than even Toyota.

I would have to agree with socarfiat. The idea of a US Top Gear makes me a bit nervous. It's perfect the way it is, and I'd hate to see it ruined. Even worse: I'd hate to see an American version that wasn't good, but becomes more popular than the BBC version. It's just not a great idea to mess with perfection. I saw the Australian version, and it was a little weird. Something just didn't seem right. They should just air new seasons of the BBC Top Gear on major American networks.

I would like to point out that even though the US auto industry is struggling Chrysler deserves to die, GM has a line of eco-friendly cars for the future (if people will shell out thousands for the pathetic Prius imagine what will happen to the Volt)and Ford isn't even in trouble, they just want credit backing from the US senate. Besides they still have what people want: large, imposing SUVs and trucks like the Escalade and F-150 and in the end that alone will save them.

Like you, I oppose the bailout but not because of the UAW workers. I blame the hundreds of recalcitrant vice presidents and other executives resistant to change who did not plan for predictable cyclical gas prices. As to your hostility to UAW workers, you'd work for 70Gs if you were offered. Why is it that we applaud wealth accumulaton but then shame those who make a little bit more than the rest of us? Why not see how they did it and replicate it at your shop?

An annoying thing toyota does is on their batteries. They put a "indicator" light on your batteryand is advertised by the dealers to tell you, the owner of the vehicle, whether or not your battery is "good". FALSE.
In every battery there are multiple cells with plates dividing it all. That little "indicator" only measures the electrolyte level of one cell of the battery, while the other 7 cells remain untested. Therefore you could have a problem in cell 1, yet that light on cell 3 says ok.

Honestly, the Tacoma compared to a GMC2500 DuraMax Diesel, or a Cummins RAM, or even a Ford PowerStroke is just a joke.
Not to mention I have had more complaints from people about the differential failing on Tacoma's than any other pickup.
The import car manufacturers only got people purely by company image through advertisement, and the fact that their cars retain value longer.

I had one of those Ford f350 diesels brand new in '93. In a year and a half it was in the shop 13 times. 3 injection pumps, 2 air conditioning compressors, 2 split radiators, 4 serpintine belts, 2 sets of pulleys, steering linkage failure, and anti lock brake faiure. I traded in a 1981 Toyota Hi-lux 4x4 for the Ford. That Toyota gave me over 250,000 miles, and the only thing I replaced was a clutch at 130,000. I dumped the F350 for a Tacoma 4x4 in '96, and I still have it today. Runs great!

As a technician, I can honestly say American cars are built just as well or even better than japaneese cars.
With the fact that everyone has finally got fuel injection down, except for Nissan, cars run pretty damn well overall.
Nissan is the only company to use sidefeed fuel injectors, which clog and leak easily.
What kills automobiles is the lack of maintenance. People who own domestics tend to beat on their cars more, and not maintain them as much; perfect recipe for automobile failure.

The US automaker's CEOs share in about 5% of the blame and the UAW about another 5%. The other 90% of the blame lies with Congress and CAFE. It must really suck to go Washington and then have to take part in dog and pony show put on by a major source of your problems. I wish a few of these CEOs would go on a easter egg hunt, find a pair, and then watch Howard Hughes' congressional hearings. Hughes never took that $hit.

And yes auto manufacturers have been producing good quality vehicles and keep in mind that a good amount of "Higher quality" cars from toyota and honda are built in the United States. Get it in your heads people. There is really no vehicle, car, truck or bike that is of one country origin through and through anymore. That era has been long gone. Just about every vehicle, be it good or crap quality build, has parts and design influence from many different parts of the world.

Truth is the people do have alot of this as well as the state of the economy on their heads. Not just the manufacturers or bush or the war. Manufacturers are only going to build whats in demand and there was no shortage of people buying SUV's(that get 10mpg) on loans they couldn't afford to go along with mortages they couldn't afford thinking their jobs would be around forever when job security was going out the window.

Been a while since you read Consumer Reports? A 2005 JD Power and Associates 3 year survey rated Ford and Chevy just above average. But as the article "Fact check: Are American cars really that bad?" at CNN Money put it, "The problem is that "pretty good" has become "not quite good enough" in a world where quality standards have been raised so high and which many consumers still have bad memories of General Motors and Ford cars that have failed them in the past."

the american auto company DOES make reliable vehicles now, its just that foreign auto companies are making vehicles cheaper and so more americans are buying their cheaper vehicles. My father has been an auto worker for over 30 years and he had to leave his job as a master mechanic because there is no work (no work because the american cars are getting more and more reliable/thus leading to no jobs/side jobs) so in my opinion, the US auto industry is going into the red because of the people

There should be a salary cap for all workers including CEOs, if they don't like it, find another job.
No CEO deserves more than $100,000/year.

Well, I do not mind rewarding CEOs with higher saleries or bonuses - provided they keep the company in the black, but many CEOs are lavished with spectacular & expensive perks even when the company they are in charge of is running deep into the red.

Oh and a quick comment about the video: Very informative! The only problem I had with it was the poor editing. I wouldn't have been turned off in the least bit if you had shot your dialogue in multiple sections so you could edit out the stutters and mess ups.

Its funny, Toyota sells less cars than GM. They sold 9.37 million cars last year and made 17 billion, GM made 9.7 million cars and lost 40 billion. Its the UNIONS you idiot! MG pays for pensions and salaries for employees that do not work. You do the math, work for GM 20 years retire and then collect a pay check for 30 years. If you owned a resturant would you want to pay employees taht used to work for you?This is almost as bas as Social Security.Bound to fail and bring us all down with it.

Even with the UAW only 10% of the cost of a GM vehicle comes from employee wages. It is difficult to figure out why GM and the other American manufactures are in the shape that they are in. You could say that they relied on the SUV balloon too long, but even Nissan is getting trouble from their Armada. Perhaps Chevy's sudden surge in research into green power is why they have no reserves. Right now Chevy offers more green vehicle options than even Toyota.

I would have to agree with socarfiat. The idea of a US Top Gear makes me a bit nervous. It's perfect the way it is, and I'd hate to see it ruined. Even worse: I'd hate to see an American version that wasn't good, but becomes more popular than the BBC version. It's just not a great idea to mess with perfection. I saw the Australian version, and it was a little weird. Something just didn't seem right. They should just air new seasons of the BBC Top Gear on major American networks.
