@CosplayCore Well, take "A Little Priest". Mrs. Lovett has just come up with this brilliant way to simultaneously increase business for her pie shop and please Todd. Every other performance has this as the most up-beat and gleeful song in the show, and the almost casual tone Carter uses just throws it off.

This film got a lot of things right, but the choice for Lovett was not one of those things (at least, if you've ever seen any of the other Lovett roles). It can't hold a candle to Broadway.

@Nitrinoxus Sorry for two comments, I forgot to mention this ; Surely it's just your opinion about Broadway being better... Personally, I adore musicals where they should be - a stage. But I adore Carter, Deepp and Burton, and this film. And I really don't think that, in the film at least, the song comes off as bored... They definately sound happy, triumphant almost. Although I do agree that the soundtrack of this song sounds a little flat.

@Nitrinoxus XD That was a pretty strange thing to say on the soundtrack of the version with her in. If you don't like her singing, fuck off. Seems simple. I mean, why would you listen to a singer who's performance you don't like, when you could listen/watch the Broadway? :) That way keeps everyone happy.

@ChocoCoatedLemons Why listen to this version? Simple: I think Depp is one of the better Todds. To be frank, I never liked the Broadway version of the barber, just as I don't care for the film version of Lovett.

Each version has its own charms. Can I be blamed for that?

Yeah Lovetts a very confusing character. She acts like shes against killing in the live musical, which is the true musical version, but she lets Todd do it because its raking in money. She might actually be two-faced. Think about it. She tried to kill Lucy to get Todd and when Todd was around she was probably nice to her. And I think she would sell Todd out for enough money even though she loves him.

I love that line, but it has the tendency to pull one out of the story and think of the "overdone" bits of this show....there aren't many, mind you, but they're there (and no matter how much you lok past them, "they somehow can still remain".

Saw/heard this performed at Sondheim's b-day concert at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago. Angela Lansbury was there but I can't for the life of me remember if she was the one performing Mrs. Lovett....I want to say it was. Anyway it's always been one of my favorite songs. So clever and morbid - especially because the music, if you listen, is a waltz. So twisted. Fantastic
