I LOVE this! I think it's so pure and beautiful and so God-exalting. My only problem is when this becomes a part of the "church culture" and is separated from true worship. Then you get a type of legalism that says "this way and no other". I grew up ABC Baptist in a church that shunned instruments (except the "heavenly" piano) and it ran a bunch of us off. No one explained worship to us. It was just "this is how it is". I kept close to Jesus but, sad to say, some of my friends didn't.
This is the best version of this song just as Mozart's requiem is the best in its' class. Tthe reach up of the soul to something higher is captured here- Bill Maher should only be listening.
@miatadriver : if you're looking for a church with no musical instruments and sacred harp singing, go to your local Primitive Baptist church. I don't know what part of the country you're in, but if your're in the South there's probably one not far away. The singing is unbelievable. There's also a Sacred Harp group that gets together to sing once or twice a month.
Shape note singing is hardly dieing. Come to the church of Christ ;) Check out my videos, all of the singing is from shape note books put out by the late, great, Lynwood Smith. Enjoyed your video
I have been in many Churches of Christ but none of the used Shape Note song books. True, the did sing a cappella but that is not the same thing.
I did grow up in Brazil and many of our churches did use the "Harpa Sagrada" song book. We used it mainly to teach people how to read music. Most of the churches did have access to instruments since my denomination is not against using them in worship.
I just 'favorited' this video...I've always loved Bethany, and I was brought up singing shaped notes in a shaped-note-singing family in a shaped-note-singing church, and I miss it and it touches my soul in a way that those heathenistic modern "praise bands" just can't with their electric guitars and rock beats. It's too bad shaped note music is gone from our churches and dying out with my generation. If only it was taught in the public schools so that the young people could carry it on. Oh well.

Incredibly beautiful and uplifting. The simplicity is why... It reaches all the way to Heaven.

If I could find a church without a "jazz band" and all the electronic stuff and just simple singing such as this I would start attending again.

Amen to that.
