I always read in the internet about history of guitar-like instrument in small jazz ensemble in the pre-amplification era, and in this video I finally can see with my eyes what I always read: an acoustic archtop guitar in the rhythm section (that replaced the banjo) and also a resophonic guitar. Thanks for posting
Definately not my style, but man, you sure can't argue with skills like Django's... and all of this with two fused finger... What an AMAZING player he is. His stylings infulenced SO many players in future generations.
The fact that Jazz originated in America does not imply that all styles of Jazz that exist are American, or that all Jazz is American. By your line of reasoning all geometry should be regarded Greek. That is foolish.
I don't claim the music of Django has nothing to do with America, i said his style is not an American style. Like all musicians he was influenced by those who came before him and he is very much connected to American music via his American predecessors, some of whom he admired greatly.
@gr0mithtimon I'm Amercian, but some of the finest jazz musicians I ever had the opportunity to play with were from all over Europe, including the eastern block countries and Russia. Also there's some killer South African and British jazz musicans. If a musician has real talent and a burning to play JAZZ, it doesn't matter where they're from.
C'est extraordinaire de pouvoir visionner ces quelques secondes pendant lesquelles Django est visible, on voit quelle était son attitude pendant les chorus de grapelly, il bouge, accompagne, pas du tout le 'melon'...
I'm pretty sure the is called Swing Guitars. Django recorded a few different versions of this song, including a versions for big band and for electric jazz guitar, from the mid 30's to mid 40's.
The one your after, assuming you want the traditional HCOF sound, is the recording from 1936-37 era. This version is found on quite a few cds. Just to name a few, I found it on:
The National that Chris Seibold plays with Howard Levy is a single-cone type, similar to the one in this clip. Oscar Aleman played the more expensive tri-cone model, and I'd love to have been there when he was jamming with Django in Paris...
The best National player I ever heard live is Bob Brozman, who plays both single and tri-cone models. That same night (in LA) I also heard John Jorgenson, but he was playing rock with Davey Johnstone at the time, not gypsy jazz, and I wasn't impressed.
Thank you again for clarification. Chris Seiblod is a good guitarist and a humble man who is not on a ego trip. He is an very good accompanist. You should hear them do "Nuages" John Jorgenson Quintet was a the 07 Clearwater Festival. They were pretty good and very respectful of the music.
 I couldn't imagine who/what you're getting at ;-) But he is good!
I've heard John J. playing at sessions in Samois a few times, and bought a CD of him playing both gypsy guitar and clarinet the night of the LA gig I mentioned, so you can imagine how disappointed I was to find him in Elton John Band mode that night...
great little video! thanks for uploading, django's expression (unchangeable) is great :) i'm reading his biography at the moment and this is great matearial on the side. youtube has a purpose!
Wait a second! Did I not see the great Argentine guitarist Oscar Aleman playing a National Steel. To the best of my knowledge, he was the only jazz/swing guitarist who used a responic instrument.
No, that's not Oscar Aleman, who played a National tri-cone (as well as a D-hole Maccaferri) anyway. But resophonic guitars were originally intended to be used in dance bands, where they would be able to cut through the sound of the brass instruments.
Late 30's Germany, Netherlands. So glad Django and his jazz pals escaped the camps.Hitler gassed Gitane or Romany or Gypsies and dissidents and "deviants" as well as Jews. Think about those he did get who we will never know about...
please give me the full address on ebay, is there more footage of django than the short clip of him in the chair. since the 80's the only 2 clips i saw of him were the train and on the couch and with the hot club of france, i've had those clips for 20 years but this clip is really rare. please get me that ebay address and thanks!!!!!!!

Are you familiar with the great Harmonica Player Howard Levy. His accompanist plays a responic instrument and does wonderful things with it.
