  • Would the garden hose melt, after hours of use ?

If so, radiator hose as an alternative ?

    My generator is so loud.....

Thanx for posting, enjoyed the video.

  • Thats a nice hookah...for the gearhead. Good to be Kind to the neighbors.

  • Great idea, it really quiets er down! When I did this it melted the hose though lol!

  • it will also make a good sprinkler lol XD

  • dude thats back for your engine it wil choke him o_O

  • Read through some of the other comments.......

As I have said so many times, on a simple crapy old mower engine like this, it makes no difference. It wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding anyway so it really isn't a problem.

The main reason for this silencer was so the engine could be left ticking over without getting on the neighbers nerves!

Please read through the rest of the comments in future.

  • You got it right bro. I did much the same thing with an 80CC motorcycle engine. I put a piece of hose off the stock muffler and put it into some old rags. All I could hear is the mechanical noise of the engine and maybe a little from the intake but it was deathly quiet compared to before.

  • I like videw where people soup up massively powerful engines - mopar or nocar! ;-)

  • Find a way to get a better microphone, talk louder and speak English. Well, the last one was a joke. But seriously, you are way too quite. Great video otherwise!

  • Send some money this way and I'll get a better camera!

  • @steamwally Oh! Sorry my friend! I am so poor I don't have enough for postage for a post card to send across town. Less than dirt poor. Didn't mean to upset. just can't hear you on 2 parts of video. Love the video, I an always making things from scraps and trashed items. Or fixing stuff because I am so darned poor. Tell you what, when I strike it rich, I'll get you a professional setup! Gonna go look for some of that treasure now with a metal detector. Cheers!

  • No worries mate, cheers!

  • @steamwally And great work on the silencer also. As an artist and tinkerer fixer upper, I really appreciate folks like you to give me ideas on how to deal with issues like that. I have an Atlas Powered Paraglider with a Fresh Breeze Motor unit and I fly as often as I can. I have worked on the motor several times for one reason or another, and this silencer gives me ideas. Thanks again!

  • @superdave54811 dont bitch unless you have videos on your page

  • I agree with you, but it doesn't help when others have a go at someone for a comment aimed at someone else. Far too many youtube videos are spoild by petty arguments. That goes for everyone commenting on this video.

  • @aaronzack14 Troll!

  • @superdave54811 WHERE!!!

  • I know if it was my engine, I would put another set of holes on the opposite side of the can to allow the engine to breath more, but hey, your motor not mine.

  • Indeed, had the engine been working hard then I would have done so, but my aim here was just to make it as quiet as possible with it ticking over, I think I achieved my goal.

I got rid of this old engine a long time ago, it was just a boring old mower engine and I have moved on the better things....

  • wouldn't it melt? :O

  • If you read through some of the other comments you will find quite a few people have asked that, the hose did not melt and was used, many, many times.

  • I put a tin can on my old 1980 xr80 and I thought I had a 1000 dollar exhaust

  • BOOM, woops to much air.

  • An exhaust like this will never cause such a low stressed (frankly crap) engine like a suffolk to hey are just indestructable old beasts, boring but indestructable!

  • Rubber pipe?

    It will melt quickly.

  • So how come it didn't......!

  • Wow, great job. Thinking about doing this for the intake on my air compressor. What is inside the tin can?

  • There is nothing inside the tin can, the end is simply sealed and a few small holes drilled in it....simple as that.

  • @sweetlikeADAM Green Split Peas lol

  • hmm back pressure?

  • I don't think thats ever going to be a problem......

  • im inclined to think that most of noise is being absorbed in the hose...

  • Dramatic difference. Well done.

  • Thanks!

  • Would have guessed, the garden hose would melt from the hot exhaust.

    Great idea, thanx for sharing.

  • funny name - "Suffolk" suffolk suffolk

  • "Suffolk" is a county here in England and these engines were made by the "Suffolk Iron Foundry."

  • @steamwally Mmm.. interesting. So when the engine is running, it's trying to say where it comes from... SSSSuffolK ..SSSuffolK...SSuffolK.... and you are trying to gag it!

  • something like that......lol

  • ok, thank you

  • it seems as if the suffolk may be running a bit rich on the fuel mixture side??

great idea i may try this on my 12v ac generator project

  • No, it's set just how it should be. The engine is very worn so passes lots of oil, hence the smoke :)

  • Nice!!!

    Its given me ideas!!!

  • They sell swirl chambers for ATVs which do the same thing this does. They are made for people who hunt from them and can't afford to spook the animals with a loud exhaust note.

  • Nice idea.

  • Thanks :)

  • So silent, good. Fit a 2 stroke chinese engine on that bicycle.

  • thanks, but that bikes not mine to do that with!

  • @steamwally cool beans can i use this for my riding lawn mower and when you say sodder do you mean like wire sodder or pipe sodder!

  • Hi there,

Yes you could do, but you would probably need steel hose on a faster reving engine like that. The solder was just electrical solder and I heated the can with the blowlamp first.

    thanks.

  • Very good, that's ideal for running the engine inside a shed, as you can sling the silencer out the door or window, useful to avoid CO poisoning!

  • Yeah, if your trying to spray paint with a compressor or pump up bike tyres, it's nice to be able to direct the clag away from you, and makes it easier to work on the engine as you can see what your doing!

    Cheers,

    Phill.

  • seems to make a big difference i like it :)

  • Thanks Dan!

  • Well what can you say except the proof is in the pudding so to speak - it certainly made one hell of a difference regarding noise.

BTW - I bought another old petrol mower, Suffolk Colt purely by chance, the owner wanted rid and I paid what he wanted... ha ha

  • It will help keep next door happy I'm sure!

Those Suffolk Colts are nice machines, I was going to get one a while back but naturaly, another engine came allong....

  • @steamwally It may well be a Suffolk Punch? I haven't had a proper look yet, I really didn't need another mower, but you know how it is sometimes when you see old iron, and its cheap as chips etc...

Part of the deal was a small compressor pump thingy, that will go with my Lister all being well, thats how I ended up with yet another mower. Oh well, it may have its uses, I'll see how it looks tomorrow morning in the light. :-)

  • Ah well, post a video and we'l be able to tell you what it is.

I have a pair of compressors, useful little things to have.

  • The only issue i can see is the plastic pipe may melt when it gets too hot, other than that its very effective.

  • I had the engine running for half an hour with a bit of rubber pipe on it, only starts to melt if you really thrash it, but at idle it seems quite ok.

    Cheers,

    Phill.

  • @steamwally The other way to quieten the exhaust down is to get a stainless pot scourer and put it inside the exhaust, i did this for a friend on their motorbike slash cut exhausts for the MOT some years ago and it worked very well, but its has to be the stainless variety as a brillo pad will just burn and melt.

  • Thats true, prehaps I should do that on the Wolseley, would make it very quiet indeed.

  • @steamwally Your Wolseley is NOT quiet !!!!

  • It's pretty quiet with a bit of pipe stuck on the exhaust!

  • That silencer makes a big difference!

    Good work.

  • Thanks, no baffles or anything like that needed, just a simple expansion chamber.

  • very quiet. my guess is the can increases the exhaust backpressure thats why it smokes more.

  • I thought about that but came to the conclusion that could not be it. What it seems to be is a little oil in the tube where it has been used as an exhaust before and the combination of that and the water left in the can from washing it out made a nice cloud!

  • thats amazing!!!!!!!!

  • It sure is effective!
