Really, really nice, still the same beautiful song but totally different. It's so nice to see Ric, the edge of The Cars, showing his human side -- what a great guy.
Rick...Plays For Ben...with a great voice that was the Cars....They were amazing and I grew up with them..Thank you...Rick, Ben and the Cars...Candy-O
Naw....With all due respect to Ric, this is Benjamin's song. As long as its played, you'll have a vision of Ben in his prime belting this out. Just watch the "Drive" video and you'll see what I mean.
All comments are spot on. I could never do any more justice in describing my Cars moments. My best comparison is their different and contrasting styles is much like salt and pepper, different tastes but put together very tasty...
@Petethadriver1010 Oh without a doubt, Pete -- you've nailed it. They were opposite ends of the same sensibility, a perfect musical pairing. Together they gave us some brilliant moments.
Benjamin Orr Came Back to Earth For 1 Night on this night to give Ric the strenth to do it it becuz before the show he said it would be very emotional to do it. Ben was sitting right next to him the whole time We love you ben you were taken too soon we'll all see you one day. Rest In Peace AND God Bless
I didn't see this show. Can somebody who did tell me if Ric said anything about doing this as a homage to Ben, or is that just what everybody guesses he had in mind?
@Alyson2610 Well I per The Cars and okay but don't insult The Cars. Ric sing this song to tribute his friend and band mate Benjamin Orr so if you like it than get out of here and don't watch it.
@Alyson2610 I'm also a fan of the Scorpions, but I like them doing their own songs-seriously, they could never come close to the smooth, rich voice of Benjamin Orr, and they don't come close to Ric's version either-There is NO comparison!!!!!
@birddoc47 The Cars were notorious for not talking much during concerts - they were genuine artists who allowed the music do most of the talking. Whether he said anything or not, 99 percent of Cars fans would understand the significance of Ric Ocasek singing Drive as a tribute.
"...¿quién prestará atención a tus sueños?..." Excelente letra. Ric Ocasek la dedica al amor de su vida: Pau Porizkova. Tal vez por eso en el coro de la canción oficial, cantada por su amigo, se oye, apenas, las sílabas pa, pa, pa. Viva The Cars.
Me sale igualita, con mi guitarra acústica. Los acordes lo acomodé para que salga en un tono apropiado para mi voz: RE, fa(sost.), si , MI. Nada más y cantarla.
:(.........cryin like a baby watchin this....miss you Ben. Can't imagine what it's like for those who were so close to you....Thanks Ric...really beautiful tribute....
thank you Rick for making this, and YouTube for showing it. i can only speak for myself so, i appreciate and commend Rick for doing this and feel deeply for the loss of Ben... we are immortalized by our written words and for some of us, like these boys, have the fortune to be a part of our history and future with theirs.. Ben sang with all his heart and no one can ever be him. We can sing along and remember . This is how we are truly appreciated. Thanks for the music,
I cried through the whole song. Ric may have wrote it but he knows it's Benny's song, hence the way he sung it. Ric does a great job and I think he meant it as a homage to Ben.
Ric wrote it and Ben sang it best. Sadly, Ben is gone, but this great song lives on. I will always love and prefer Ben's version but Ric's is good too. If you pay attention, you can hear the raw emotion in Ric's voice when he sings it. I think he still misses his band mate and close friend terribly and we need to stop with all the insults.
Then go ... goodbye. Go watch the Scorpions cover version of the song originally written by the man you see singing it here. This is a tribute by Ric to his band mate and good friend Ben Orr, who recorded the song. Millions of fans love and miss Ben terribly to this day ... show some respect!
I get the very same feeling. While Ric has never been blessed with a great voice, his performance here IS very heartfelt, and I get the feeling that he's just trying to hold his emotions back from the brink of losing his composure. I think he knows full well that he can't sing it like Ben did, so to his credit, he doesn't try. He makes it his own, and while it's much sadder in tone, it seems just as poignant in a different way. What a fine homage to Ben.
@woodchuk123 Not "blessed with a great voice"? Are you serious? Define a 'great voice'...celine dion, robert goulee(sp)....he has one of the most unique quirky voices in R&R , and if he didn't then the Cars would not have had all those hits.
You're certainly right. :) No offense meant - perhaps I should have clarified my earlier statement. I never meant to imply that Ric has (or had) a BAD voice. I was intending to point out that his voice was "quirky," as you so aptly put it. I should point out that I think there's a difference between being a good singer and a good vocalist. The former is more execution/ability, the latter more emotive IMO. While Ric doesn't have Ben's pipes, he can certainly create a mood.
Haha! Thanks, but I doubt the ratings would improve too much with me at the helm! I'm too nice to really tell it like it is if the performance sucks, which is exactly what some of those so-called singers need to hear!
I see in the description that this was from "VHi Hanging With"? I'm not familiar with this--does anyone know how he introduced this song? Did he dedicate or pay tribute to Benjamin in any way before singing it? He did a great job on it. But there will never be another that can do it like Benjamin. Very much missed.
This was really nice. I did cry through it though. You can just hear Ben's beautiful voice on that song and picture him. It was wonderful seeing and hearing Ric do it here with all remembering Ben.
@glennjridge Paul McCartney recently did the same thing at his last concert in NY to honor George Harrison. He took one of his songs and played it differently. I would rather have them do that then never play the song again. That would be a shame.
I have my own best friend. This is so sad. I appreciate Ric. He made me smile more times than I can ever say. Isn't it amazing what & who we survive without. makes me cry.
the cars are my favorite band. and to hear ric sing this, it breaks my heart from what he had to go through. it must have been hard to get over ben. im crying rohgt now and you can tell that ric is coming close to crying in this video. i don't what I would do if ric died also.
