we were listening to this song in science and when it said '' you gottta drink the mama's breast''. everybody left the class. our school is so dramatic
@QueenLuciana Thanks for your question. I leave out "species" for artistic as well as pedagogical reasons -- almost everybody knows that we are Homo sapiens and though many people don't know that Homo is our GENUS they know we are the sapiens species. So it is unnecessary to repea species t except in the talking rap part when I say " KPCOFGS that means Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species." The melodic-mnemonic is intended to teach the parts most people don't know.
Lol in 1st period we watched this and when the guys like huhuhuhuhuh I'm like wtfand my teacher played that like 5 times and we watched the vid for like 30 mins
Dear Katie Please Come Over For Good Sex.... thats how we remember it.... missing Domain in the Video........ but its more recent than when this video was filmed... maybe.....
nobody in my form can get this out of there heads yesterday mr thackray showed us it and now its in forever! What you singing? CLASSIFICATION RAP!? ok then
Thanks for writing Tomahawk. Actually I didn't forget species, I simply chose not to use it in the major singing part of the mantra because of the number of beats; but when I say "KPCOFGS that means Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species" in the rap over and over species is most definitely there and at the end I talk about being "sapiens" which is our species.
In terms of classification, however, our species designation is not something students don't know. What they don't know is how the Genus species combo they've all been taught ("Homo sapiens") relates to the rest of the Linnaean classification scheme. So I felt it was more important to emphasize, for memorization purposes, "Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus", knowing that once you get to the Generic (Genus) level, everybody knows that the next level is the Specific (Species).
Knowing that we are cousins to Homo erectus but that we are specifically Homo sapiens is what counts. When Mr. Sinowski adds species to the singing part he is technically correct but poetically it sounds a bit awkward doesn't it? But it is good he does that -- his task is to help you understand the science even better, my job is to make a singable song that sticks in your head. But having him add it all the time makes that stick in your head even more,
so that is the point of interactive multimedia education -- it is participatory and that increases its learning value. Thanks for writing and thank Mr. Sinkowski for sharing our work with your class!
Then there must be a lot of racists out there then, including myself -- I'm a white female and my students are 98% Black and Mexican. Sorry that my kids have any sort of pride in their community...geesh.
Thanks you guys! Grade 6 students of Poplar Rd. rock! Keep rockin' your science lessons (and why not make your own melodic-mnemonics? Just take the vocabulary from your textbook, make it rhyme, put it to music and video yourselves with images from the textbook and the internet! Then post and share with the rest of us!) Cheers!
You rock for saying so! Thank you Napanee! Since the video was made back in 1989 I don't know if anyone still remembers the dance (it's like the Charleston...); twe learned it from ostriches :). The yellow pants went out of fashion at the end of the last century, but check e-bay.... Cheers, T.H.

The students in our class were not "black kids" but humans whose skin showed various shades of color (many lighter than my grandfather).
The creature that I did the voice over on is in the supefamily Hominidae, like us humans and the other great apes, not Cecopithecoidea, which is the superfamily of monkeys. Get your classification straight. "Rap" is "Rhythm and Poetry" and is an art form that belongs to all hominids and is very effective for transmission of quality information. If you think teaching our descent with modification from our mutual primate ancestors is somehow wrong or shameful you belong in Sarah Palin's world.
To suggest that co-learning evolution is somehow racist reveals the racist in you. If you saw something "degrading" about using rap to describe our relationship to the other life forms on this planet then you should examine your own racist beliefs. And if you are a "creationist" you should examine how religion has been used over the centuries by bad people to enslave others. When asking "what even lurks in the hearts of men" follow Michael Jackson's advice and "look at the man in the mirror and ask him to change his ways."
Ok lets see smart guy. Frist are you saying the teacher is not a jew? And your saying the the kids in the class are not black? And you did not vocie over the chimpanzee to have him rap about evolution? To a room full of black kids? You are delusional. Im not the only one on this board that thinks this is very rasist.
One more thing you should not teach evolution. Is a theory not a fact. Now I have to get make to my stocks. Why dont you teach them about that. Some thing that can do them good.
Hello stockmister. First I AM the teacher in the video (that was me back in 1989) and I am Catholic. I also have Muslim relatives and live most of the time in Egypt. I have Egyptian relatives and Egypt is in Africa in case you were wondering. Some of the kids in our class were of American Indian ancestry, Irish ancestry and English and French ancestry as well as African ancestry. We are all hybrids.
European-ancestry-obsessed racists who wanted to defend their warped eugenic agenda would emphasize one part of our heritage and call us "black" or "colored" if we had even 1/16th pigmented ancestry. We did voice over the chimpanzee much as we made the ostriches dance and people dance. Nobody is offended by other animals dancing or singing except those who are racist themselves.
Second, evolution is a fact not a theory, since it has been observed. What is still a theory is HOW we evolved and precisely which common ancestors we evolved from. "Evolution" is defined as a "change in gene frequency over time". It is the cornerstone of molecular biology which is a huge growth industry. The stock market has proven itself to be capricious -- a form of gambling (read Nicholas Taleb's books to learn more --he's one of the most successful guys on Wall Street and knows.)
I don't know what your ancestry is, but if you think you can speak on behalf of the world's disadvantaged with your Sarah Palin lip service you are doing the underprivileged a huge disadvantage. The only reason we have a robust stock market, when it is working well, is because of the scientific progress civilization has made, creating goods that have tradeable value. Without real goods the stock market is mere magic tricks. American youth need good science training, not pseudo religious quackery
