I leave out "species" for artistic as well as pedagogical reasons -- almost everybody knows that we are Homo sapiens and though many people don't know that Homo is our GENUS they know we are the sapiens species. So it is unnecessary to repea species t except in the talking rap part when I say " KPCOFGS that means Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species." The melodic-mnemonic is intended to teach the parts most people don't know.

Thanks for writing Tomahawk. Actually I didn't forget species, I simply chose not to use it in the major singing part of the mantra because of the number of beats; but when I say "KPCOFGS that means Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species" in the rap over and over species is most definitely there and at the end I talk about being "sapiens" which is our species.

In terms of classification, however, our species designation is not something students don't know. What they don't know is how the Genus species combo they've all been taught ("Homo sapiens") relates to the rest of the Linnaean classification scheme. So I felt it was more important to emphasize, for memorization purposes, "Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus", knowing that once you get to the Generic (Genus) level, everybody knows that the next level is the Specific (Species).

Knowing that we are cousins to Homo erectus but that we are specifically Homo sapiens is what counts. When Mr. Sinowski adds species to the singing part he is technically correct but poetically it sounds a bit awkward doesn't it? But it is good he does that -- his task is to help you understand the science even better, my job is to make a singable song that sticks in your head. But having him add it all the time makes that stick in your head even more,
