The motor is one of the easiest things to replace on a GE washer!

You could have found it on ebay for 30 bucks!

But if you wasn't able to fix you could have sold it to someone who can fix it and then re-sell as reconditioned, don't know how much the scrap yard paid you, but with the washer or its parts you could have easily made 200bucks!

I'm telling you that you could have had it fixed for nothing and keep it running for years to come, if not you could have at least have saved the parts as transmission, pump, agitator, timers, valves etc....you could have made some money with them and sure this was more than what the scrapper paid you for iron weight!

Once upon a time, when I was your age, you could look at appliances, cars and many other things and know by their appearance who made them. Nowadays everything is churned out by a handful of factories, most stuff is imported from somewhere else and it all looks generic inside and out. The only difference is the name that gets put on it. When things broke down you got them fixed by someone who actually knew how to repair them. Now it's more economical to throw away and buy new.

What does anyone expect. Kids these days have no idea. They've been brought up on shiny mass-produced throw-away crap, have virtually no interest or idea about repairing anything and, thus, don't really understand the concept of quality and good performance. These machines represent an era when people and companies took pride in their work and products, but that's considered old-fashioned now. This machine was probably fixable and could have given someone many more years of service.

A burnt out motor can be replaced. You'd be surprised how many spare parts are still available for these appliances. If the tub wasn't rusted out and the bearings still fine, changing the motor would have been a ten minute job for an expert. A large proportion of people working in the appliance retail sector are as clueless as the next person. Unless they specialize in reconditioning vintage and old appliances, why would they care?
