ST:TMP started production as the pilot for the new Star Trek television series. After they started filming they realized it was better to produce the pilot as a motion picture. Decker was supposed to be the new captain in the TV series, but was written out when the decision was made to scrap the TV series entirely and stick with the original cast in films only.
What happens when you put the most beautiful ship ever created on the big screen. I don't think Kirk ever looked THAT intently at any other woman he met.
@123Tristan345 not floating. Prob using a thruster suit. Good call. Don't know how many times I've watched this and I've never seen that guy til I saw ur comment
One thing that always kind of bothered me about Star Trek is the way the ships all have the USS prefix. Im not anti-American or anything, but it always seemed really out of place by implying that the US navy names Starfleet vessels. I know its supposed to stand for united space ship or something but that seems a bit convoluted, they could have just used SFV(star fleet vessel) or something. Though I will concede that USS roles off the tongue better than HMAS :P
Beautiful..I cant't wait for her to be created! :) ill be serving aboard her reincarnated no doubt :). 100 years from now on the nx-01 :) me and my beagle .
this scene with the intro with the klingons is the only part of the film worth watching. Majorly poor movie but the triology that came after makes up for it aswel as the rest of the disaster movies called star trek. I love star trek, i am a trekky but its the idea of star trek that makes us love it.
the old red blue gold uniforms was the best, but not the ones in the new star trek film, how comes the young kirks enterprise had computer video displays, and yet in the tv show the enterprise just had computer flashing lights?,. perhaps star fleet wanted to save money and have away with the vdu screens. it makes sense.
Would love to see how a model shot like this would have played with modern computer compositing (NOT CGI, just the layering and pulling out bluescreen) The model is simply magnificent, and if you see this scene on HD, there is detail that just isn't done in CGI, even the shadowing/lighting effects as well as the spacedock model itself.
To the Enterprise modelers - that is one class act starship model that has never been duplicated or surpassed before or since, in my opinion!
Nothing can ever replace the original design of the Enterprise, this ship is a thing of beauty indeed. At the time when the Original Enterprise movies were created, they had exceptional writers, a plot/theme, wonderful actors who played the characters extremely well. The last Star Trek movie did not and nor will it ever be able to live to the success of the sheer genius and talent of everyone involved at the time of these ultimate classic movies! Gene Roddenberry Thanks for creating Star Trek!
Unfortunately, Hollywood these days is all about dollar return. How to appeal to and get as many asses on seats as possible. It's why Trek XI was made the way it was. Reference old Trek for the fans? Check. Fast edits for the kids / brain dead? Check Male / female eye candy? Check Cringe inducing 'comedy' moments? Check CUTE ALIEN!! Check. CGI action sequences? Check. A masterpiece like The Motion Picture would never get green-lighted today and that sadly can be said for any decent sci-fi.
@geosword6 Cringe inducing comedy moments, Mal/female eye candy were already parts of Star Trek since the Original Series (Super short skirts anyone?)
for those of you who thought that the last so-called trek movie was a collosal waste of time you all should make your feelings knwon to paramount before those idiots put out another abrams fiasco
plus you all should also contact ilm and tell them it was a dumbass move to redesign this ship, especially with retarded monstrosity their designers came up with

A lot of people criticize this scene for being too long and pointless. To me, it's one of the best moments in the whole film. This is the reunion of Star Trek fans with their beloved USS ENTERPRISE, which they hadn't seen in 10 years. They needed to give us a chance to drink in the atmosphere, to catch our breath at our first glimpse of her. Jerry Goldsmith's score captures the moment absolutely perfectly, and gives me chills every - single - time.
@STNeish Yup. That scene was a gift for us OS Trekkers. Our feelings were mirrored by Kirk's expression. "Good to see you again, old girl. You're looking better than ever."
@STNeish Not only see it again after 10 years, but see it in magnificent awesomeness that the TV show never had the budget to do. Totally agree, love this scene.
Wish the new film had given us a scene like this. When you see the new ship from the front for the first time, goose bumps! Of course, I think this ship looks better than what they did for the new movie - it coulda been good, but needs refining.

Whenever I see this scene, a couple of thoughts rush through my head.
For starters, what was once deemed to be the cutting edge of the future and was thought of as our future has changed so much in the past 30 years. This is a past generation's view of who we will be in 250 years.
So much has changed since then, but this beautiful dream of peace, prosperity and exploration of that which we do not know still remains. To the future, ladies and gentlemen. May we make it in one piece.
Kirk's reaction to the Enterprise is my reaction to seeing Star Trek (2009). That even with her new glamour and beauty, she's still the same lady we fell in love with so many years ago.
2:01 Best view of any REAL Star Trek ship EVER!!!!!! J.J. Abrams didn't remake Star Trek, he aborted it. The Enterprise from the 2010 movie is a jacked up birth defect of a ship whose bridge looks like it crashed through an Apple store. This and the pre-refit version will always be the TRUE Enterprise period.
This is one of the most beautiful scenes in the whole Star Trek movie series. Great filmography, the unveiling of the refitted Enterprise A, the timeless Jerry Goldsmith score -- everything came together perfectly. Beautiful, just beautiful.
This is one of the most beautiful scenes in the whole Star Trek movie series. Great filmography, the unveiling of the refitted Enterprise A, the timeless Jerry Goldsmith score -- everything came together perfectly. Beautiful, just beautiful.
This was surely the best StarTrek. Photography awesome, awesome music, awesome storyline, clever, cerebral and compatible with what was expected of a film version of the series, without resort to conflicts between people and star wars. A true journey into the unknown, to save humanity. TMP was the best of StarTreks, and this did not betray its essence.
@leocmen Seriously? This movie was the biggest dissapointment of my life! Colorless, bad acting no plot...Wrath of Khan restored my faith. I liked the 2009 version as well, but I wasn't expecting much. I looked at it as it's own entity. But I'd waited for a decade for the return of Star trek and THIS is what we got? BLECCCHHHH. To each his own I guess,
@Mozart1220 My dear, it is difficult to express the nature of Original Series, in a movie. But TMP does so with elegance and honesty. Wath of Khan is nice, but calls for conflict and antagonism, recipe for attracting lovers of combat and war. TMP is Sci-Fi on the line of 2001, not on the line of StarWars.
@leocmen I just thought the sets and unis were colorless. I liked the "extended" version with the plot restored better, and of course the ship looked GREAT. But I like a bit of conflict in any story. My biggest problem with Star trek in general is they keep killing off the villains! Khan was great! Christopher Lloyd made a great Klingon! Not a big Star wars fan (at least not like I love Trek) but at least they kept Darth Vader around a while.
@Mozart1220 I think I understand you, but you can not deny that this small piece of the film faithfully translate the profound relationship between capitan, crew and their ship, a ship that has become e entity, a ship that became a myth, a ship that arouses devotion: USS-Enterprise. The enterprise does not say a word, but you feel respect about it, you feel as it was alive. Even today, I have not seen a feature film to be madeto better comply with an original TV series, as this one.
@leocmen The outside of the ship is beautiful! The exteroir shots are pure art! But the bridge and the uniforms just lacked all color. Of course the scene here is great because it shows the ROMANCE Kirk and Scotty have for the ship. I just likes "Khan" better because the story held my attention better, and the uniforms were MUCH improved. It's all subjective of course. I had a better storyline in mind for #4 as well. "Dances with Whales" was cute, but my idea was better. More later.
@Mozart1220 I understand, is not as rigorous as their uniforms. Try to imagine the thrill of the old fans of the original series, watching this movie in the theater, and reviewing the Enterprise and its crew in a continuity that respected the original series in a comprehensive way, and more than that: it brings an spock even more dark and mysterious, and a doctor even more passionate, critical to the seriousness of the film. ST-IV is something that should not have been produced. Stop at III
@leocmen My "Trek IV" would have been more like the "A-Team" With the regular cast being chased by both the Federation and the Klingons, while still working to help the Federation. They had every skillset they needed, and it would have been fun to see them finding ways to travel and work for the common good, while on the run. Oh well, it is what it is and I'm still a HUGE fan.
When I was 10 years old I saw this at the theater when it first came out. When the view at 2:01 came into shot the entire packed audience stood and clapped for the remainder of this scene. Many people were crying even. What a memory for a fan of the Enterprise and Star Trek.
@chengloki you didn't like the uniforms? wow even most "purists" love the uniforms because they are true to the original while still being new and "HD".
Personally I love everything about star trek, all 11 films and all 28 seasons. There are maybe 3 episodes I would throw in the dumpster and they are TOS - turnabout intruder, VGR - Threshold, and ENT - These are the voyages.
@awilliams1701 When Pike was in command, the uniform shirts were NOT the ones with the black collar. They were more of a rurtle neck with the collar the same as the rest of the shirt. The breast insignia was approximately 1/3 of the size. Ref "Menagerie" or the original pilot to see what I'm saying. =Stefan=
@chengloki while your right about "continuity" in the prime universe, even if the alternate universe follows the same uniforms, the pike uniforms were terribly ugly. so bland. One minor complaint that NBC had with the cage (but not the big one) was that there wasn't enough color in the show. While I know they didn't create the familiar uniforms tell the corbomite maneuver, they were a HUGE improvement over the cage/where no man has gone before. Besides Pike wasn't even the first captain.
@awilliams1701 You're right. Robert April was actually the first Captain of the ENTERPRISE. Actually, the black collar uniforms were worn on the premiere episode, "The Man Trap". 8Sep66. The big complaint from NBC was that the pilot was too ceribral. =Stefan=
When Star Trek 11's Enterprise came out, I decided to build my own version of the original series Enterprise by using Andrew Probert's Enterprise with Matt Jeffries warp engines, deflector and so forth onto Probert's Enterprise to give it the old look, and using numerous elements Ryan Church's Enterprise to make the 2 Enterprise's work together.
for me this ship is a source of inspiration and dreams yet to be fullfilled. for it is a ship of discovery with a mission to seek out new life and new civilizations without fear and prejudice.
@tgrman1 BWAHAHAA YOU ARE PATHETIC. HALL MONITOR ON ONE PAGE..THEN SAYING SUCJH GAY SHIT LIKE THIS. GO KILL YOURSELF IF IT MEANS NOTHING TO YOU NOWADAYS YOU FUCKING LOSER
See how Kirk is gazing at Enterprise as one would a long-lost lover, and Scotty is enjoying every moment of Kirk's approval. Add the wonderful Goldsmith score and sweeping cinematography, and this becomes the ultimate reveal of a spacecraft in sci-fi history. Abrams wouldn't even know how to begin making a Trek this good. Still puts a shiver up my spine 30 odd years later.
When I saw this for the first time I fell in love with this Enterprise, If I were to choose 1 ship out of al Science Fiction shows this one would be it!!!
God I love this theme. It would have made J. J. Abrams' Star Trek feel so much more like a Star Trek movie (and not a Hollywood fan film) if they would've used it. They had changed SO many things for the movie (character's back stories and in some chases personalities) to make it fit "new time line" story, but did they have to change the theme song too?
This Enterprise is the best I love How the pylons swing back the way they do and the Nacels sit so perfectly ! I hate the New Enterprise in the Newest movie how they have the pylons bowed out like that when the next movie comes out hope that changes but doubt it.
I remember this scene well when I was 14 in the movie theater. Up until this movie came out, Star Trek (TV) effects were cheesy at best. STTMP finally gave fans, Star Wars quality effects. Of all the ST movies, this is still my favorite scene. The music really sold it.
I just love how this is the only ship in ANYTHING to receive this much attention on screen. It really couldn't work with any of the others. They're all grey and clunky looking. Even the E doesn't have the grace that this ship radiates. This is the Enterprise.
This film has been criticized for being slow and clunky. This scene is especially picked for criticism. You have to realize, we hadn't seen the Enterprise for ten years and had never seen her on the big screen. The redesign and reintroduction of the Enterprise to the fans was the entire point. This scene was a gift to all of us, plain and simple.
The Refitted Constitution Class ships are still sweet looking even by today's standards in Star Trek. None of the others just come close in how they look.
@terrywest I agree with you mate, Its the best looking enterprise, I think the new movie enterprise basicly took this ships saucer section and the TOS nachelles and said we got an enterprise, I didnt much like it... This shall always be the Enterprise to me...
@terrywest111 Absolutely! While I liked the original ship (a favorite from my childhood), this refit was an update that worked. Stylish yet functional, futuristic yet classic, it was a marriage of Industrial Design and Victoria's Secret: the Lamborghini of spacecraft. It made the Star Wars vessels look clunky by comparison.
Even today, this is the best design of all the films--and the series, too. :)
@wolfstev76 Agreed; R.I.P USS Enterprise NCC-1701; Destroyed to prevent her capture by Klingons. Her sister carries on the legacy...May the Original Enterprise find peace in Starship Heaven.
You know, I'll bet that when this came out, there were thousands of people complaining about the Enterprise's redesign and bemoaning the forever ruination of Star Trek.
Ships evolve, gentlemen. No matter what version she is-she is ALWAYS the ENTERPRISE.....No matter who commands her-her history and legacy are forever assured.
As for the person who said Captain Picard didn't love his Enterprise - yes he did. But Picard is a different captain and no captain is cut from the same mold.
This is such an epic scene! I love the way they really give you an idea of the enormous scale of the ship! the new Enterprise has absolutley nothing on this one!
I STILL prefer the pre-refit Enterprise with the earlier tube nacelles and 45* struts. But I suppose they HAD to update it. If they followed Trek storylines the Enterprise was approaching 20yrs old at that time. 1st Captain Robert April,2nd Christopher Pike, 3rd James Kirk followed by Will Decker, Matt Deckers son perhaps? (Commodore Matt Decker was Commanding the USS Constellation in the episode 'Doomsday Machine') Then admiral Kirk for the motion pic time frame. yeah,I know, details DO matter.
@joeylodes Guess I did,.but my cronology stopped at the Motion Picture. Captain Spock commanded Enterprise as a training vessel after Admiral Kirk. Why he didnt remain in command after the Vger incident was never explained if I recall correctly. I stand corrected.
@thecopykidofthestarz The 1701-A was just this same ship with an A added to the registry number, so it's the other way around - the 1701-A looks like THIS ship.
@thecopykidofthestarz The warp engine nacelles - not rockets at all - were round on the original Enterprise seen in the 1960s TV show. The original refit - this ship - was introduced in The Motion Picture and was in The Wrath of Khan and in Search for Spock, where it was destroyed. The same model was reused to be the 1701-A at the end of The Voyage Home.
@thecopykidofthestarz Also, underneath all the changes, this was meant to be the old Enterprise with new parts - the original Constitution class starship, upgraded or "refitted." The 1701-A was built from the ground up as a Constitution refit. (perhaps according to unofficial sources, I'm not sure)
IMHO Paramount owed this to us old timers. The effects budget on the TOS kept getting in the way and the effects were less than wonderful. When I saw this in the movie I was totally flabbergasted. Awesome!!
This is what Gary McKinnon saw when he hacked into the defence computers.

At 15, I saw the first Star Trek episode televised in Australia.
Prior to showing it was billed as 'the future, today", and words similar to this.
I had to see it.
I begged, promised my life away, if only I could be allowed to watch the first episode.
I did, and at the end of 30 minutes, I was 'transported', filled with wonder, and curiosity.
I still wonder, and remain curious.
Your words are my thoughts.
'She' is a fine ship.
I too, got chills.

Stop at III
leocmen 6 months ago
@leocmen My "Trek IV" would have been more like the "A-Team" With the regular cast being chased by both the Federation and the Klingons, while still working to help the Federation. They had every skillset they needed, and it would have been fun to see them finding ways to travel and work for the common good, while on the run. Oh well, it is what it is and I'm still a HUGE fan.

When I was 10 years old I saw this at the theater when it first came out. When the view at 2:01 came into shot the entire packed audience stood and clapped for the remainder of this scene. Many people were crying even. What a memory for a fan of the Enterprise and Star Trek.

cockercane 4 months ago
@chengloki you didn't like the uniforms? wow even most "purists" love the uniforms because they are true to the original while still being new and "HD".
Personally I love everything about star trek, all 11 films and all 28 seasons. There are maybe 3 episodes I would throw in the dumpster and they are TOS - turnabout intruder, VGR - Threshold, and ENT - These are the voyages.
awilliams1701 3 months ago
@awilliams1701 When Pike was in command, the uniform shirts were NOT the ones with the black collar. They were more of a rurtle neck with the collar the same as the rest of the shirt. The breast insignia was approximately 1/3 of the size. Ref "Menagerie" or the original pilot to see what I'm saying. =Stefan=
chengloki 3 months ago
@chengloki while your right about "continuity" in the prime universe, even if the alternate universe follows the same uniforms, the pike uniforms were terribly ugly. so bland. One minor complaint that NBC had with the cage (but not the big one) was that there wasn't enough color in the show. While I know they didn't create the familiar uniforms tell the corbomite maneuver, they were a HUGE improvement over the cage/where no man has gone before. Besides Pike wasn't even the first captain.
awilliams1701 3 months ago

This is the Enterprise.
redwa11er 1 year ago
@redwa11er
This film has been criticized for being slow and clunky. This scene is especially picked for criticism. You have to realize, we hadn't seen the Enterprise for ten years and had never seen her on the big screen. The redesign and reintroduction of the Enterprise to the fans was the entire point. This scene was a gift to all of us, plain and simple.

kd84afc 1 year ago
@terrywest111 Absolutely! While I liked the original ship (a favorite from my childhood), this refit was an update that worked. Stylish yet functional, futuristic yet classic, it was a marriage of Industrial Design and Victoria's Secret: the Lamborghini of spacecraft. It made the Star Wars vessels look clunky by comparison.
Even today, this is the best design of all the films--and the series, too. :)

And the writers knew that

Whata great moment for Trek this was.
jayce79 1 year ago

@modeler308 you forgot "Captain Spock" from The Wrath Of Khan
joeylodes 1 year ago
@joeylodes Guess I did,.but my cronology stopped at the Motion Picture. Captain Spock commanded Enterprise as a training vessel after Admiral Kirk. Why he didnt remain in command after the Vger incident was never explained if I recall correctly. I stand corrected.

thecopykidofthestarz 1 year ago
@thecopykidofthestarz The 1701-A was just this same ship with an A added to the registry number, so it's the other way around - the 1701-A looks like THIS ship.
briguy1971 1 year ago
@briguy1971 why do the warp rockets look straight an sleek the original was round.
I saw the film recently the said it was so refitted it might as well be a whole different ship.
thecopykidofthestarz 1 year ago
@thecopykidofthestarz The warp engine nacelles - not rockets at all - were round on the original Enterprise seen in the 1960s TV show. The original refit - this ship - was introduced in The Motion Picture and was in The Wrath of Khan and in Search for Spock, where it was destroyed. The same model was reused to be the 1701-A at the end of The Voyage Home.
briguy1971 1 year ago
@thecopykidofthestarz Also, underneath all the changes, this was meant to be the old Enterprise with new parts - the original Constitution class starship, upgraded or "refitted." The 1701-A was built from the ground up as a Constitution refit. (perhaps according to unofficial sources, I'm not sure)
briguy1971 1 year ago
