when i play a game (apb) it runs very slow when i shut the game down, even though my computer is better than the recommended hardware.
my question is, if i buy a flash drive to allow for ready boost, will it help my computer run normally when i close the game down? or will it not make much of a difference?
I use readyboost, however my computer doesn't restart properly when I keep the USB stick connected during reboot. The BIOS starts up, and then it goes to a DOS looking black screen that says "NTLDR is missing or invalid, press any key to continue".
Pushing the any key doesn't do anything until I disconnect the drive.
@teknotoast i think you might be able to disable your computer from trying to boot from ur flash drive. go into your bios and i think you might be able to disable your computer from doing that.
@pennenbakje1 you need to go in to Computer from "Start" menu and right click removable disk or whatever you called your memory stick. then click "Properties", click the "Readyboost" tab and check "Do not use this device".
I have a few questions: I'm using windows 7 HP, and I have 4 gb RAM. Is it still effective to put an 1 gb USB flash drive in? And, does the computer boot up faster with readyboost?
@Interdiu It won't make a noticeable difference, your initial 4gb RAM is plenty. Readyboost will probably be more effective on systems with 2gb RAM or lower.
one tip for this is most people say it dosent work it is because you have to use a fast drive right now i am usung a 4gb exreme sd card with 30mb per second most standerd memery cards only have 2mb per sec so thats why
Only works with USB 2.0 devices and must pass tests for available free space, write and random read performance. Recommended to reserve 1-3x the amount of RAM installed. Your drive must be at least 2.5MBps throughput for 4KB random reads and 1.75MBps throughput for 512KB random writes. Open the "Event Viewer" and drill down to: Applications and Services Logs, Microsoft, Windows, ReadyBoost, Operational. Look through the list of events to see the performance rating for a specific flash device.
Also I like to add. Format your flashdrive to NTFS, Set readyboost to dedicated. What I've found from tests for windows 7 take the amount of physical motherboard ram and multiply that x 2. And that's the size of flash drive you need. Too go it faster. Go into device manager and in disc drives find you're flashdrive and go into policies and set it to Better performance. This is if you leave it connected permanently. If you have a usb port on the back of a desktop, set it and forget it.
Readyboost doesn't save on the driver permanently from what I've seen it's empty soon as you unplug the flash drive. Yes it caches stuff to increase speed but also extends the onboard memory. If you have 1 gb of physical ram. And you open enough programs to exceed 1 gb. That extra is transfered to the flash drive. Also everything put on the flashdrive (readyboost) is compressed x2. So if you have a 4gb flash drive, that's 8gb of cache-ram. Win 7 also supports multiple readyboost drives vista not
Can I Stop using Readyboost? you Know How it takes memory on your flashdrive how can i remove the memory its using? like Restoring It back to Its Default
So if this only affects start-up and closing of programs and not during use...is this really a considered a performance boost? I would expect it to actually speed up processes when using a program.
I have one quick question , I have a dual Windows 7 OS on my system , will the Ready boost dedicated USB can be also normaly use on the second OS without getting my index crackedup ?
@Ericiscutie Great question: ReadyBoost serves as a repository for non-critical files only, so you can remove the USB stick at any time without having to worry about corrupting system files, or crashing the entire computer. Reinserting the USB drive into the computer will allow it to reassume its ReadyBoost abilities automatically.
@getconnectedtvshow So if i take the USB out. I still have have the amount of RAM. Like I have 1 GB of RAM, and I wanted to put in a 4 GB flahdrive. If i put it in and used ReadyBoost and then took it out will it have 5GB of ram or do I have to keep the flahsdrive in to count as RAM.
@Ericiscutie These are technical questions that I am not really qualified to answer. Try messaging @TuneUp4Windows, I think they might be able to answer your questions regarding ReadyBoost. I hope that helps.
@getconnectedtvshow hey i didn't know what this was for and I added to to my psp's memory but it took a huge space! i had 3 gb left but now i'm left with 783 Mb and i wanna delete it, so when i try to delete it, it says this file can't be deleted because the file is open in system. So please help!
How would your computer use it if its not plugged in? You can remove it if you need it for something else, but it has to be in and set up for readyboost to work. And it doesn't count as more RAM, its more of a secondary swap file.
@Ericiscutie For Readyboost to work you need to keep the flash drive plugged in. It uses your flash drive as a physical piece of hardware to boost the performance of your computer. As soon as you unplug your flash drive then all of the performance benefits from Readyboost are lost.
Would've been nice to see some benchmarks or tests. All this really did was tell me exactly what's on the Windows 7 home page for ReadyBoost. Good promo, but not really any kind of feature review.
@ZeroCorpse We try to keep our reviews pretty simple and basic because we want to cater to everyday computer users. But your right - some benchmark or tests would help demonstrate how effective ReadyBoost really is. Thanks for your comments, your point is well taken.

ok this is five star material i didnt even think about using my flash drive for this now i have 950 mb instead of 500 mb il have to figure if the performance is better or not well this is going in my favorites and its awesome
Well, on my dell mini 10v with 1 gb of ram, I definitely feel the improvement with a 4 gb sd card dedicated to RB... On my desktop pc it's different, as it has 4 gb ram. RB is made to stabilize the performance of weaker pcs running win7, above 1gb of ram>U.S.E.L.E.S.S. But be careful netbook users, with its 6 cell battery full, I can use my netbook 7-8 hours no problem, but RB reduces it to 4,5-5...
yeah but how do you format to exFAT!!!!

it really depends on the read/write times of the USB, you want higher read/write times to see a bit of better performance.
