  • to answer his all his speculation about whether it was a destroyer or les paul: it was an ibanez destroyer that he eventually 'destroyed' into the 'shark' guitar

  • I think you did a good job I like it

  • This is most better that other lesson's and tabs

  • Such a good guitar player! I have most all his Instruction vids.I found one of his bands cassettes(Bangalore Quire)in a used record shop.Shitty fucking music! all mostly ballad girly typical late 80"s early 90"s glamy leather crap! what a shame!

  • 5 minutes and i can play live van halen? cool.

  • Is this from 1970?

  • this chick can play!

  • Shit, I thought it was a whammy bar at the end, too...

  • someone please tell me what the pickups are. the things just sound friggin sweet.. maybe the amp?

  • @mattRRgraham1996 To get Ed's sound like this you really need a Gibson P.A.F pickup. The Frankenstein pickup works too

  • @Sean2592 like a burstbucker 1 and 2?

  • @mattRRgraham1996 no Ed doesn't do those. The magnetic stuff hasn't been part of his forte, until recently. Go to eBay, or Amazon, guitar center, etc. And look up the frankenstein pickup. I myself like the EVH Wolfgang bridge pickup. I've heard bad reviews but it kicks ass. It all just depends on what your wanting to play. For the older stuff with Dave go for one of those previously mentioned. For the Hagar sounding stuff go with a Seymour Duncan JB. Any more questions just ask

  • How can anyone dis' this guy? He nails VH pretty much better than anyone else on YouTube. Think a few people around here are a bit jealous...This stuff 'aint easy to play right.

  • I can`t watch this fucko, his so serious like he invented guitar playing or something... come up with something cool your self and than we can talk..

  • poser lolol

  • The songs i can tell he used a Gibson like you said You Really Got Me, Runnin' With the Devil, On Fire, Jamie's Cryin', and maybe Feel Your Love Tonight.

  • @Sean2592 nope it was called an ibanez destroyer a.k.a the shark

  • @atomicfile2 Now see i'm not sure if it was around then or not that's my only dalema here. I mean i know you really got me is done with a gibson, but i have never seen the shark guitar live on any vids. the only time i've ever seen it is on the cover of Women and Children First. I could be wrong though

  • @Sean2592 now even you really got me was with the shark he doesnt use it anymmore because he ruined it by trying o make it look like a shark he recorded the first album with it before he wrecked it

  • @atomicfile2 alright then man thank you.

  • Eddie Van Halen is a devil worshipper he was the one that got tapping recognized giving birth to norwegian deathmetal and every other kind Eddie Van Anti-Christ

  • @SongHooks1993 faggot

  • @DieSuperHigh lol :)

  • how do i play like him with an acoustic?

  • i have an easy way to answer this question... you cant play like him

  • @jghaverty EVH has played a les paul on many occasions I have a picture from 1978 opening for black sabbath and Ed is playing a gold top Gibson les Paul. Just google Ed w les Paul.

  • How to play like VH? Answer: obsess until you find your own personal musical expression on the guitar and you will find what Eddie found -- an individual voice. Even if you think it sucks focus on your strengths not your weaknesses. It's all about how you phrase that makes you YOU. Stop listening to music for a bout 6 months to a year and develop your own sound/voice.

  • Just Let.. Eddie Van Halen be Eddie Van Halen,..and you play your own garbage.

  • ..that dive at the end of the tapping section, is just a delay cycling down...wow, like now i think about it the floyd was not even invented when eddie did this so it follows that this way low dive would have to ahve been done another way...that is awesome, you have an insane ear. I am in awe...for real!

  • You I'd reel good

  • this is great!! really like the part where you show the delay on the last note, never knew how he did that! cheers and rock on

  • Actually, the kill switch thing has been used more time than you can count. Ace Frehley used it forever. And if you listen Jimmy Page used it before.

  • play too well that guitar! and that sound is perfect! that you use pedals? is very similar to eddie

  • More tweek please

  • how did he get the job for this lol

  • Comment removed

  • I wanna know what pickup that is!! good god it screams!

  • This dude looks familiar, I think he was in a band called BANGALORE CHOIR????

  • 5:00 Best part of the whole video!

  • It was a destroyer that he did the behind the bridge thing with. I read an article on that in guitar world.

  • Did I hear a "D-duh" at 1:15?...I didn't know this was for comedy.

Just kidding-great lesson! :) EVH rocks.

    __TheClassicRockKid95__

  • These lessons RULE!!!

  • curt mitchell tapes make any one else think "hey man ill teach you a couple kool riffs for some pot err.. i mean gas money!" i finally stopped buying these when i think it was the "god of thunder" lesson where he noticeably leaves out like 3 notes in the main riff. its like the guy learned these by recording off the radio onto a cassette and playing it back... but then again he was probably terrified of getting sued, i know that Sharon osbourn made them stop selling the randy rhodes one.

  • i think it was a gibson flying v

  • i bought this vhs tape in 1992

  • Randy & Eddie... EVH is greater and more creative, but Randy is still very good and legendary!

  • NEW basic lead technique lesson on our site. More to follow. Blues box lesson based on ZZ Top shuffle.

  • I didn't learn anything on this video except maybe what a "phase-shifter" might do???

No tabs, just theory here I guess...thanks?

  • I bought this dvd many years ago. lol This guy is an idiot for what its worth. The dvd isnt very good, but showed me how to do cathedral.

  • @JgHaverty I watched your videos. That "idiot" can play circles around you ha ha

  • @stringbenderE2E His ability to play the guitar doesnt make him not an idiot. Yes hes much much better then me, which is why he is selling dvd's and not me. FWIW, EVH never played a les paul, he played an ibanez destroyer. so, more idiocracy.

My videos are me fuckin around anyway, so my heart's not broken lol.

  • @JgHaverty I hate to tell ya, but yes he did play a Les Paul on occasion. There are photos out there of him doing so. It's not hard to find the info. And I was just messin with you about your playing, you're pretty good .. I was mainly just responding to you calling him an "idiot."

  • @stringbenderE2E No, I know he played live with a les paul, but he never recorded with one. :D Appreciate the compliment. BUT have you watched this video? The guy plays fantastic, will never say otherwise, but god damnit, hes about as smart as a bag of hammers lol. The video is pretty sweet and had a lot of stuff Id have never figured out (i.e. the dive bomb at the end of eruption is delay pedal O.o) so its worth while to get if you dont have it.

  • Cool stuff man...good instruction

  • TUNE IT OR DIE

  • curt Mitchell plays Eddie better than Eddie does lol

  • I watched this video when it came out

  • this guy's got really bad memory

  • Why did he punch the poor delay pedal...

  • @Emceetem i suppose it's better than being stomped on all the time

  • Kurt Mitchell!

  • this guy looks like he could belong in Lost Boys

  • it was an ibanez destroyer. not a les paul. but you could just do the thing you do with the bridge at the nut by the head. and i think eddie could do the switch thing with his franken strat, cause the neck pick up wasnt even there, flipping the switch still kept it on the bridge pick up.

  • eddie didnt actually come up with tapping either, listen to steve hacket, he played with genisis with phil collins and actually invented tapping, eddie popularised it...

  • @luco99 wow, steve hacket must be really old. hammer-on's / tapping is heard in classical compositions from the way back when time.

  • no he didnt use 2 different guitars, u can get exactly the same sound by doing what u did between the bridges, just up on the headstock above the not...

  • @LEOJ024 It is more commonly referred to as the "Snake" guitar, but I know what you are talking about:)

  • @LEOJ024 The "Shark" guitar is the Ibanez Destroyer. That is common knowledge.

  • Curt Mitchell is the man

  • what bridge pickup are you using?

  • u remind me of christopher walken! :D

  • This guy and Al Estrada were probably the two best VH dudes.

  • Go to my page for full VH song and solo dissections. Extremely accurate. I do the first four albums only.

  • you can't read you lying prick...

  • @djsorrell04 you misunderstood, he used the les paull to record the song, not on the whole albumn. Running with the devil came out before he had his own trend of guitars. I even think the guitar he first used was a flying V/ shark Guitar

  • @deavazquez and @djsorrell04 You are both completely wrong. He is playing the Ibanez Destroyer that he later cut up into the "Shark" that you see on the cover of the 'Women and Children First' album.

  • @deavazquez he used the shark to record on a lot of his albums. a lot of the rythm tracks are done with it.

  • @deavazquez it was a ibanez destroyer...he cut it like a flying v..but he destroyed it in the process

  • @deavazquez He Used The Shark Destroyer

  • @evhfrankie yes he Did I Got it Tattood On my Arm Eddie Rocks

  • @deavazquez acually it was an Ibanez destroyer

    (sources via guitarworld interview)

  • @deavazquez no, he never used a les paul. He used an ibanez destroyer....

holy cow. EVH openly advertises he used the ibanez, and not a les paul...

  • @deavazquez actually if you read his interview in guitar world he used an ibanex destroyer! his hand bulit guitar...and I believe a gibson les paul with the paf taken out of it...that pickup was what he rewound and put in the frankenstrat :)

  • @djsorrell04 man your stupid. he used it for his first year

  • @djsorrell04 He used a gibson destroyer a lot on the albums. He modified the guitar for the W&CF album cover and ruined it forever (so they say - look at that album cover and you'll see it). Once you take the meat of the guitar away underneath the bridge, it lost all it's punch! Too bad, that guitar sounded amazing.

  • @djsorrell04 He's used one live on numerous occasions. He built his Frankenstrat using the pickup from it. Do your homework or get the fuck out

  • @djsorrell04 No he does use a les paul on some songs, notice no whammy bar... and thicker tone

  • @djsorrell04 Eddie did not use a "Kramer" until the 1984 tour. All those albums up until the 1984 album were done on his Frankenstrat (Boogie Bodies neck and body with a Gibson 335 pickup), an Ibanez Dwstroyer borrowed from Chris Holmes of WASP. And a Les Paul. Dude is right in that the start of Running with the Devil is on a Les Paul. The Frankenstrat did not have a selector switch set up - it was just for show.

  • @djsorrell04 the destroyer was used on most of the first two albums wherever no whammy bar is present. it became the shark guitar, eddie was upset at himself for cutting it up because it never sounded the same after. Also to djsorrell04-eddie did use a les paul, i have concert pics from the late 70's to prove it, just because you discovered vh in 1984 doesn't mean he didn't play guitar before then.

  • @djsorrell04 come back to me when you appreciate a les paul

  • @djsorrell04 Tough stand for some one who doesn't really know what he's talking about. There are so many mid 70's pictures of Eddie playing Les Pauls. One famous pic is a gold top Les Paul with a missing neck pickup. There are so many pics of eddie with Les Pauls that seems impossible >you< haven't seen any. Maybe you're the knob and should get back at a later time.

  • @djsorrell04 he has used a les paul, ibanez destroyer( shark guitar, charvel, kramer, steinberger, peavey and wolfgang

  • @djsorrell04 what you talking about? he uses the toggle switch on you really got me which the les paul is known for having and peavey's are pretty cheap guitars so why would i want to use it lol

  • @motleycrue24 american made peaveys are just as good as any gibson out there dude. Wolfgangs and PCX's for starters...

  • @JgHaverty ya if you like warped necks....like gibsons lol i think not

  • @JgHaverty nope! les pauls rule

  • @back2backband1 Oh cmon, you cant tell me a les paul is better then a music man :D Id be hard pressed to hear that ;)

  • @JgHaverty i have played music man, i love them but give me my 1958 les paul anyday! plays like a hot knife through butter and sustain? nigga please!

  • @djsorrell04 you got pawn noob! hahaha go kill yourself now x)

  • @djsorrell04 he would finish his concerts with the les paul OFTEN because the other ones would be completely out of tune or with dead-nroken strings.. get your facts straight..and check out the web, lots of pictures with eddie with a les paul

  • @djsorrell04

yer th' roundest nob in th' sqr box........have some respect....

p.s peavey and kramer had nothing to do with EVH in the early years....knob....

    get back to me.

  • Where's this guy now.

  • what's this guy's set up other than the amps and guitar?

  • tht killswitch thing was more of a Randy Rhoads deal. Better player than EVH in my opinion

  • @str1570 they are really diffeferent... its hard to compare

  • @deavazquez yeah they got different sttyles

  • @deavazquez Wouldnt it make them easy to compare if they are different? People who type this cliche really need to think first.

  • @deavazquez it is i love them both, randy was a better writer, but then again so was eddie your right you can't compare and they were friendly rivals

  • @str1570 amen bro ever since I saw Randy I knew he had more experience with it... then I learned that Randy had first picked up the guitar at age 6... insane

  • @str1570 Eddie did that way before Randy.

  • haha of curse Randy was a better player

  • @str1570 randy rhoades was the best

  • @str1570 No way was Rhoads a better player than Eddie. We tend to deify people when they pass away at an early age. Rhoads was great, but Eddie is an immortal player, a virtuoso

  • @owlsrfun47 Rhoads is better he surpassed EVH in every aspect. I love them both both i think Randy was a better guitarist just died young and couldnt write his best music to come.

  • @str1570 Apples and oranges, my friend. Don't hate on Ed though. Besides,Van Halen I came out two years before Blizzard.

  • @str1570 lol fuck u

  • @str1570 how would it be more of a randy deal?

  • @str1570 i agree randy was a better writer, they were friendly rivals

  • @str1570 if you listen to "you really got me" van halen does it in the solo

  • @str1570 Yep....that's your opinion!

  • gee, amazing!

  • I believe that chime sound at the beginning of "Running With The Devil" was played behind the nut, not between the bridge and tailpiece. He also tracked his rhythms on his Ibanez Destroyer.

  • what kind of delay pedal is that, does anyone know??? Do they still make it or one like it???

  • @EddieMan2222 Yes. and its a boss DD-3

  • where is the rest?

  • TRANSEXUAL!

  • he used ibanez destroyer

  • This guy related to Gary Busey? Hmm..

  • @DougFCKNSteele ....haha gary busey....i can see that!!!

  • @DougFCKNSteele NONO his son LOL

  • it was his shark he only used the frankenstrat and the shark on the VH1 record

  • what the hell are you doing on youtube? you should be in a gay parade !!!

  • homo! you probably cant even play

  • @nickbartguitarist666 hahaha,i guess thats cool but a little creepy

  • Curt is using a BOSS DD-2 that is no longer made...but a DD-3 or DD-6 will do the exact same thing when you turn that same knob and dive like Ed did on his Univox back in the 70's

  • what boss delay pedal is he useing?

  • I handle that dive at the end with my whammy pedal. put it in 1 OCT down, i pull the harmonics on the 12th fret then i slowly push down the pedal, its an easy solution and it sounds awesome.

  • yes on the Explorer. According to Eddie, he borrowed a Korina wood Explorer from Chris Holmes (Wasp)

  • wats the set up for the amp?

  • @XiaNingTian That's a long story.

You can download the whole video torrent

  • "years years and yeeeeears"

HAHAHA FUNNY, but also awesome lessons, nice work!

  • It was an ibanez Destroyer. In the you really got me video hes using that

  • Eddie's amazing! And Curt does a good job copying his stuff

  • totally have this on tape :D

  • Wow, I never realized that Ed ended Eruption with a delay knob. Good catch.

  • same LOL xD

  • brian may did not invent tapping for spread your wings, I'm pretty sure it was eddie that was the first to do that

  • gezz...billy gibbons people...was th first to do it...LISTEN to the video!

  • what is the guitar he is using at 2:01

can u give me a link of that guitar, or same model??

  • Eddie used the Destroyer on Jamie's Cryin' and overdubbed with the Frankie

  • i love eddie

  • Great video, although I still can't tell how hammering is different than tapping

  • Hey only hammers here, you need to find the Tap segment with harmonics.

  • Great shirt!

  • nice
