When I was a kid this song was haunting to me and at the tender age of eight years old when it was released, it made me feel nostalgic and made me cry.

I was 18 mnths old when this was released its ok living in a dream world but the worlds problems cant be faced and resolved unless you face upto reality, when this was made i'm sure heads were in the clouds just like the beatles and hundred's of other bands and artists from this era, flower power was a great thing but the flower withered & died but i was thinking of this song yesterday when it popped into my head while i was at work and i thought it would go far today if it was released again :)
36 years ago ?? god thats terrifying, i was 11, remember it so well, great song, hadn't heard it for years, my friend just text me from the pub cheating in a pub quiz, asking who had sang this song, from no where is name came instantly, and here i am within minutes logged onto you tube and back in 1973 again lol
This song will always have a special place in my heart. It was playing constantly on the radio the day of a very good friend's funeral - she was 16 when she died suddenly. Carol, I still miss you and think of you!!!
@1235jacqueline1235 yeh it sucks i'm 17 the music these days is rubbish in comparisan to the old classics a crap time for music but a great time for technology
This song was originally written by Jacques Brel as "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man") - in French - in 1961.
It was a song from a dying man to his unfaithful wife and his friends. Rod McKuen translated it into English as "Seasons in the Sun" and dropped the unfaithful wife part!
Jacks released it in December 1973 on his own label - and It is one of the all time highest selling singles in American history - at the time - over 6,000,000 records sold!!!!
@Earthlinked such a beauty this song...almost immortal and material the same time. Thanks for the story... Cause the story of this song , song many times heard in my childhood, was kind of untouchable, like all things from old times
@TheMara61 When it was released - the critics BLASTED this song as a "bubble gum" - a song of no worth - something that a 12 year old would buy - a teenie bopper song!!! And they did buy it - over 6 million copies - they made Terry Jacks a mutlimillionaire!!!
@Earthlinked thanks for the story... Like J Brel... but i have grown up with this bubble gum surrounding me... and i think it is one of those unchained melody... like the Unchained melody itself... like those Sim& Garf unforgettable I'd rather be a seagull
@TheMara61 I'd rather be a forest than a street?!?!?! (El Condor Pasa - The Condor Passes Over) Those are NOT considered "bubble gum" music - but "Seasons In The Sun" was - and a zillion 12 year old girls bought the record!!!!!! The same with all Bobby Sherman records!!!
@Earthlinked Hmmm, I see. I used to listen to this song whenever I could but so far I had imagined it dealt with a young man about to die bidding farewell to his best friend, his father and his girl. Such a great difference!! Anyway, it's a very moving song, but thanks for making things clear to me - it was worth knowing that - and thanks samaki1o1 for posting!
@acla9000 If you are going to be a "one hit wonder" - it is always best to make that one hit - the biggest hit at the time!!!! Today the biggest selling single in recording history - is ELton John's "England's Rose" - a remake of "Candle In The Wind" - sung at Princess DIanna's funeral in 1997. It sold over 15,000,000 copies!!!!!!
@acla9000 it was not dedicated to Marilyn Monroe - "Candle In The Wind" was about Marilyn Monroe - she was the Candle In THe Wind!!! Both Bernie Taupin (words) and Elton John (music) were greta fans of Monroe!!!!
@Earthlinked Well, I had come to that conclusion when I learnt the lyrics - chiefly because of the first words, 'Goodbye, Norma Jean (her real name)". Truly she was like a candle in the wind, easy to be blown out.
@acla9000 Correct - it was about Norma Jean Baker - who lived in Hollywood - and changed her name to Mariyln Monroe - because she liked the name Marilyn - and after President Monroe!!! ANd she truly was a candle in the wind. In those days - you either slept with the producer/director/whoever - or you did NOT get the part!!! It was guessed by her biographer that she had slept with over 400 studio executives before getting her first break!!! She had very little actual talent - but was gorgeous!
@Earthlinked Are you listening to this song?? Seasons in the Sun wasn't about Marilyn Monroe. Nothing to do with her. That is Candle in the Wind, by Elton John. Totally different tune.
Why are you writing about that song on this page? Makes no sense. Seasons in the Sun is about dying. Leaving loved ones behind.
@Earthlinked That's right, although she had done much effort to get more substantial roles; she wasn't the so-called 'dumb blonde' that she would play in many movies of hers. Unfortunately she wasn't taken really seriously by the others - other source of disgust for her besides her personal life. If you asked me what her best role was in my opinion, I'd tell you: the one in 'Niagara Falls'. A sensuous woman, but quite different of the bimbo character that had consecrated her.
@acla9000 She was too stupid to remember her lines & act at the same time!!! Remember the infamous photo of her standing on a subway grate and the wind blowing her skirt up? This was scheduled to be a 1 hour shoot - in NY at 1:00AM - it took 2 full nights to shoot a 35 second scene!!! She had 2 lines - and could not remember them! Then they noticed that her pubic hair was showing - they added 4 pair of underwear! Then a few wardrobe changes - and finally they wrote her lines on large posters!
@acla9000 She was the orgianal "Hollywood Space Cadet" - her head was empty - but she did fill out a dress very nicely - and EVERYBODY took advanage of her!! I cannot remember who it was but one director said that he had sex with Monroe - more than his wife!!!! She was simply passed around for sex - becasue she was beautiful - but almost no talent and very difficult to work with!!! She actually invented her own role - the "Bimbo" and played the part very well!! Hollywood will eat you alive!!
@Earthlinked Some directors would have said terrible things about her ("Directing Marilyn is like directing Lassie" - Otto Preminger or "Taking out her a performance is like taking a tooth out" - Billy Wilder). I believe she may have been someone quite difficult to work with, and in my opinion all of this is very sad for an actress, being gorgeous or not. But if you ask me if those two had something with her, well, sorry, sir: I really don't know...
@acla9000 True - there was a film about her many, many years ago & Bernadette Peters played Monroe and it was a true story of her rise in Hollywood!! And when she was starting out - they gave several examples of her going into the directors office - and the director would throw a sofa cushon on the floor - which meant for her to get on her knees and give him oral sex. And this happened almost weekly - for over 2 years! It was known as "visiting the casting couch" - and Monroe visited it often!!
@acla9000 Look at some of her movies - she was NOT a good actress - but she was gorgeous – and a GREAT body (breast surgery did not exist) and the way she moved - was very sexy! But she could NOT act!
Opposite of Justin Bieber - his stardom is due to the fact that he was given a very rare gift by God- a "pitch perfect" voice - (about 1 in 100 million) - he is NEVER off key and his pitch is absolutely perfect (as was Elvis, John Denver and Sinatra - the top 3 record sellers in music history!)
@acla9000 And she was not taken seriously - because she was passed around to Hollywood directors for fun - for a few years! She came in & read for the part - gave the director oral sex and then left! And when you do this - who is going to take you seriously? And Clark Gable was BEGGED not to be in her last movie - all said she was terrible to work with. He accepted the role anyway - and had a heart attack while waiting for her to show up - at 4:00PM - for her 9:00AM shoot with Gable!!!
@Earthlinked Yes, I know this. She was really said to have brought about Gable's heart failure due to her delay, since his health was quite fragile then. By the way, many actors and directors (eg Laurence Olivier) complained she used to arrive quite late for rehearsals.
@margatelad Terry Jacks (born March 29, 1944, Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian and since he is still alive today - i would think the answer is NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! There are versions of Terry Jacks singing this song in 2008 - right here on YouTube!!!!!!!
they played this for my pops at his funneral (moms choice) it was so sad but it kinda brings peace to know his suffering is over but this song brings tears every time

Why are you writing about that song on this page? Makes no sense. Seasons in the Sun is about dying. Leaving loved ones behind.

@Grannysheart You have to read the previous message - he was asking about "Candle In The Wind"!!!

@Earthlinked So much work for a scene which needed just something quite spontaneous!!
acla9000 11 months ago

But if you ask me if those two had something with her, well, sorry, sir: I really don't know...
acla9000 11 months ago

Earthlinked 11 months ago
@Earthlinked Yes, I know this. She was really said to have brought about Gable's heart failure due to her delay, since his health was quite fragile then. By the way, many actors and directors (eg Laurence Olivier) complained she used to arrive quite late for rehearsals.
