about the practice of these traditions by Chicanos here in the U.S. ...Danza, for the thousands and thousands of practitioners in Mexico and those in the US, is simply a collection of many related spiritual paths and traditions, like any other faith practiced in the United States and around the world. Some more traditionally syncretized, and others more recently "de-Christianed," and everything in between. Just some thoughts :-)
However its roots, and the bulk of it traditions, and its essencia and spirit are Native American. The dancing itself is only the public aspect of La Danza and is only one fraction of the richness. So yes, Danza may not, by Western standards, be "authentically precolombian" because of History but then, neither would most cultural phenomena of the world. As for the xenophobic comments
Danza has evolved in Mexico for 500 years as a melding of Nahua, Otomí/Hnahnu, Pame, and Purhepecha traditions, Catholicism, and European, African and Asian cultural influences. Like all native traditions today, it has not remained in isolation and is inherently Meztizo as a result of history. Conquest, disease, foreign interventions, the Inquisition, bloody revolutions, and nearly 500 years of history will have some effects ¿que no?
con su raíz indígena entre estas culturas, tras 500 años de conquista catholicismo, intervenciónes, revoluciones, y mestisaje. Estos nombre son una manera de recorder a esos antepasados. O.k...fumbling along in my pocho Spanish. An important thing to remember is not to get caught up in western constructs of black/white, right/wrong, authentic/invented etc. Think grey...if its in a good way, what's the problem.
Why don't you let all of us bask in our ignorance then. We are happy. You can try to change us, but you won't. Be respectful. Thats the LEAST you can do. Tlazokamatli puto.
And the fact that we DO dance just proves that the culture is not dead. And I think it is very rude to come and bash on someone else's beliefs. But I'm sure you weren't taught. Be respectful to everyone else please, as none of us did anything to you. We simply want to share with other people (people who may actually APPRECIATE this).
Alomejor ni regresa el menso que puso esas palabras. Nadamas quieren poner su opinion e irse.
In Response to what the person is saying. We KNOW where we come from. We practice and are a part of something that has existed long before is, and for that reason it is sacred to us. Don't bash on us simply because we still love our culture and because you come from one that your probably don't even know where you come from and don't know what your people practiced. And in that sense you are lost. You don't know yourself, whereas we do.
NO!! you are the one who doesnt know yourself which is why you say what you say and do what yo do. You are looking for an identity here in the USA. I know my culture and know where I come from.. why? well because its all around me, i live it. You see America is my present culture we white men of the West are the victorious.. and we founded the USA. You live in our world, You cannot escape it.
Beautiful culture and dancing,I tried it last week at a pow wow,my legs are still killing me,not like my usual two step soft walk around the circle.Much respect~And don't bother fighting with the fool on here,he is not worth you words..
So why did many cultures and people with many backgrounds came to the USA? hmm lemme see.. to immigrate fo a better life, for better oppurtunities... etc... for one everyone here in the USA are immigrants... we all came from somewhere else either than USA...
Mestizo's lay claim to the whole of the Americas??? hahaha.. so if I have me a nice Mestiza wife and our children look white can they also claim the whole of the Americas..
Contrary to your belief the aztec people are not extinct... fine... if you wanna live in the present, then lets not celebrate Thanksgiving...the pilgrims are an extinct people (as well as all the indians they killed on that same day)
Thanksgiving is a concept of sharing and giving thanks, it transcends time and ethnicity.. Yes the Aztecs are Extinct.. maybe they have spanish speaking Mestizo descendants following Christianity.. but for the most part the language, the culture, traditions, even the people in their modern form.. Are either lost, dead or vanquished.. the truth might hurt you.
oh really so a anglo saxon holiday of celebrating the killing of my people transcends time and ethnicity...but aztec dancing which celebrates the rhythm of the universe, of life and death, of love and harmony does not transcend time??? really?? hmmm i see...
Anglo-Saxons? I see Browns, Blacks, Whites etc all different creeds and people celebrate Thanksgiving.. This Aztec dancing is foolishness because you La Raza jokers tie it to racism.. what is your people huh? the Mestizo nation the mixed race which is the majority of modern mexicans. You are not related to the Wampanoag tribe which encountered the pilgrims.. they died out or mixed with the the settlers, so no doubt a white man carrys their direct descendant line.
the fact that so ethnicities celbrate thanksgiving has nothing to do with its transcendence of time. What your comment basically tells me is that only traditions which are anglo saxon have any validity.... so nothing indigenous can exist... u dont event understand the meaning of danza: it is a PRAYER... it is sacred...
The fact you and your La Raza cohorts perform this circus on United States soil does not make it indigenous but foreign. you say the people in their underwear with feathers are doing a prayer?? prayer to who? the aztec gods. the fact that almost nobody follows Aztec mythology as a religion. makes this an attempt at a replay of A DEAD Culture's Pagan way of Life. Its DEAD DEAD DEAD. Give this lame stuff up. its been vanquished.
First of all...dont even come to me with that bullshit...europeans are the foreigners here....so do not call me an illegal in MY homeland. the fact that you took the land by killing the people was illegal . we are not Flooding YOUR country..we are merely occupying what is ours, without our regards to Irrelevant borders. By the way, YOU cannot Define MY identity... Only I can do that...Purepecha blood flows thru my veins.. and the Aztec are my Brothers..I define my identity.
hey, what danza is this. my group does one like it, actually two that loook like this one, we call the one you're doing on this video xochipilli, but it also looks like paloma. tototl?? answer back please.
Hello, this video is not of one of my performances, it is a performance i taped in Oxnard California during the Race Unity day. This group is from around the Oxnard-Ventura Area. I dont really know what the name of the dances they performed that day.
ososvaldo....i can tell you that my group calls this one paloma...its the beat to paloma for sure...of course other groups may call it something different
You mean the mestizo nation.. aren't the majority of the La Raza.. A mix of Spanish and the natives.. this disqualifies you as a distinct race. you are impure.. hence all the boxes you have for the census choices.. anyways in a few generations we will Americanize the whole lot of you..
Oh i like that, hey is that Spanish?? isnt that the language of the Conquistadors?? lol. Dancing Stone Age Aztecs but speaking the tongue of their overlords. Viva Espana!!
wow im just so impressed you know a clever phrase in the Nahuatl Language. Did you just type that in the ROMAN ALPHABET?? lol. La RAZA follows the West, language, religion, culture, everything. I am laughing at the stone age dancers here.. trying to represent a Extinct People and a dead culture.
I am not a European, I was born here in the United States my ancestors did come from europe but that was centuries ago. The Aztecs Extinct, The La Raza movement a joke.. It seems the darker a Mexican and closer he looks to these long lost people, the more he desires for an identity. You want an Identity live in the now and lose the feathers and create a greater new nation, and go back to Mexico.. I am so tired of your people flooding the USA because you can accomplish much in your own country.
i am a bit Aztec and and i hate it when racist honkys go around and start talking crap about mexicans
