Milk Cow Blues by itself is the single reason why all those morons in documentaries who said the Kinks sucked at blues are WRONG. The Kinks most definitely did NOT suck at blues!
Peter Quaife as a bass player was just fine. His riffs are melodic and they give the song exactly what it needs. He's not a show-off. Listen to "Til the End of the Day" - especially the last 20 seconds. To my ears, Bruce Foxton of the Jam had a similar syle, and I listened to both Foxton and Quaife a lot when I was learning to play. Conclusion: I wouldn't change a note Peter Quaife ever played on a single KinKs recording.
I can't stand when people say Pete Quaiffe wasn't a good bass player. No he isn't John Entwhistle (who is but Entwhistle) but he was pretty good, especially for those days.
Entwhistle isn't that amazing, he just got noticed because he was one of the first to use roundwound bass strings and play flashier than what was the norm then.
First, the Kinks were THE best group. Intelligent, thoughtful, funny, lyrics of Ray Davies and musically, so innovative. Yes, he was right up there with Lennon and McCartney. But they were ruined by greedy, not so sharp management. Although I loved Ray's singing, it always sounded thin. And Dave, the greatest British Invasion guitarist, his voice is punkish, not that its a bad thing. If the Beatles sang the Kinks songs, they would have been not just world kings of music, but galaxy stars.
There are lots of versions of Milk Cow Blues out there. To my ears, no version can top the KinKs doing it live. Check out "The Live Kinks" album. Excellent!
@girpo - They made to many poor decisions, like not tipping of the people giving tour-allowance in Usa. But don't feel sorry, we've got the music. Right!?
That is the best live performance I've ever seen of the Kinks. Dave rips through Milk Cow Blues while Pete's bass rules. Ray really does the Idiot Dunce, too. Thanks for getting this back up.
this has almost twice the hits as Part 2--YOU GOTTA SEE PART 2!

Is this how their show started?
Was the first song on that set-list really "Well Respected Man" ???
If so, that's an interesting way to start off.

I've got this on DVD, too, and the live sound is really quite good, given the technology back in the "dark ages".

Back then there wasn't a lot of ways to get a dirty, raunchy, distorted sound out of a guitar, so Dave just made them up.

dirty, smelly, unkempt, ragged, unpolished, slightly out of tune and the best Rock and roll band of all time
