@nearlyoutofideas ..i like ian, love his persona, love the film, his band were awsome with that whole jazz funk thing they did, i think the band out shone him to the point where i think he was the wrong front man for them, although he was a good front man, his cheap school boy lyrics ruined their music, the only two songs that stand out were the very commercialized "hit me with your rhythm stick" and "reasons to be cheerful", and that is only due to the chorus, the actual lyrics are crap
God this man was an absolute bloody genius! Although what he sings about here would be politcally incorrect nowadays he wasn't singing it back then to have a go at anyone in particular. Good for you beepbopdoodoo so glad you could laugh at it.
Spasticus autisticus was written to show his disdain for 1981's International Year of Disabled Persons, which he saw as patronising and counter-productive —it was banned by the BBC. Dury was a disabled person himself, having been left crippled by childhood polio. (wiki)
Considering 1981 was the year the BBC children's show Blue Peter put Joey Deacon on the TV- yes it was extremely counterproductive. That's kids for you.
@anonUK And how is it, that a disabled singer like Ian Jury, gets slagged for singing about his own experiences? He was raised in a special school, 'where they let you lie down if you fell down' , according to his own words. This song is about saying something truthful about being disabled, and not sweeping it under the carpet. Or allowing it on Blue Peter once a year.
helo can ayone tell me whatt tis soung is aout??? somon told me as a opersonj with disabailittes (FSA that i suhld listen tho this soing brcause it is about m e but i do not unerdstand it!!!
@CockneyRebel1979 he didn't get away with it when it came out, it was nearly banned and taken off the shelves, the only thing that stop them was him arguing the fact supposedly
@jdo3000 Thanks! Just a matter of choosing the right gizmo to transfer, really. (I use an ADSTech DVDXpress DX2 that advertised proper synching, but I don't think it's available any more.)
Saw Sex Drugs and Rock n' Roll this week...blown away!!! Don't doubt he was hard work, but what a talent.....listened to this in my youth and didn't really get it...now I feel guilty that I didn't really know what it was all about...he's been gone 10 years now....and boy in this PC world we seriously need another Ian Dury
@Pasion4MyPassion It was OK anyway. Guy's message? "show the disabled some respect". He doesn't have to be a victim himself just to be able to preach something that needs preaching.
"Lord Upminster" was Ian, Sly and Robbie; I believe it was recorded in Jamaica, when Mr. Dury took a break from the Blockheads (the temporary departure of Chas Jankel --"Musical Diector" --hurt the band musically, although "F***ing Ada" and "Superman's Big Sister" stood out as vintage Ian) -- "Laughter," with Wilko Johnson, was okay, but Chas is a bloody wizard ("Do It Yourself" may have been their finest hour), and his return was a relief for us Blockheads ...
@revjemima Yeah, it's definately Wilco Johnson alright. He joined the Blokcheads a few years after his departure from Dr. Feelgood and is a great player. Ian Dury was always a hero and a true british treasure. A real good poet that got get the right band working around him. Just so glad we had him..

In 1981 Ian Dury and the Blockheads came to Australia on their "Antipodean Progress Tour". I saw them at the Capitol Theatre.
Ian Dury came on announcing: "Hello all you out there in Normal Land!" and I still remember watching a guy dancing to this song.

It's always amused me how the only people that got offended by this song back in the day were the able bodied people and not disabled folk.
It's a classic song and was Dury's way of giving the finger to the twats that thought a "Year of the Disabled" would be a good idea.
The BBC banned it. Idiots.
