I didn't see an amd older than 3 years working properly , but i've seen Pentium 2 333 mhz 128 ram working under XP. The history teach us : Intel rules!!!  I remember some guys saying that Athlon XP is better than P4. Now , there are many P4 from first class working , but amd xp....none.That means that An intel processor work properly after years , but an Amd , after a years is "getting old"

Rofl i still have my old AMD XP 2600 running at 3.15ghz from a stock 2.6ghz. Running on air and still running to this date. Now i have built INTEL systems as well and have a bunch of trouble with them. So what does this tell you. Just because you have had a bad exp with one does not mean the other is better. Simply means you have not run into many issues with them.

I do not know where you get your info from, nut I have sold years ago a computer with and Athlon XP processor to a friend of mine that uses it in her real estate company and she calls me about once a year to reinstall the OS. All I can tell you is that machine still runs as well as back in March of 2003 and I first bought it. It is now almost 9 years later (Oct of 2011) and that AMD Athlon XP 1700+ still runs strongly!

You Do know that the Frequency of AMD and INTEL is not the same

AMD is 1=1 while INTEL has 1=.75

so INTEL's 2.33(.75)= True Frequency

vs

AMD's 2.0(1)

Intel Messed up your math. and AMD doesnt do anything about it they just changed the Model Numbers to tell people that they're frequency 1=1 is equal to intel's frequency 1=.75

Summing up, I think on the right model, and the right benchmark amd shows this good test result. But the average consumer needs to look at prices. Are they buying a $250 chip? A $400? A $999 server chip? Either way, across the board, it seems that most people are saying the amd is falling behind on performance this quarter. That's why I'm probably going to order an Intel.

LOL, she's lying. I just read several articles showing Barcelona's performance was not as good as Intel's newest CPU's. They are trying to make a good impression at launch by comparing AMD's newest CPU against one of Intel's slower CPU's. AMD was great 2 years ago, but don't be fooled as it's not that way today. Also AMD is desperate to give the illusion that Intels quad isn't real. Who gives a shit about AMD's 4 core being on one piece of silicon if it's not as fast? I don't.

I think, all these comparisons without precise specification is pure speculation on nothing. Why? There is a very good proggie -- Performace Test (v6.1 now) that allows to compare various systems performance. You may download data for different platforms from i-net. And comparison of real (not hypothetical-would-be-systems) top end ones of AMD and Intel just made me laugh.

I really don't like either Intel or AMD better. I pick what's best atm, but why are they comparing a next-gen AMD with an old Intel and why didn't they list the rest of the specs of processor and system? The clock speed rarely changes all that much without the proper bus speeds, etc. Especially not with a difference of 330 mhz. Funny how intel got 30% better performance with 8 cores of Xeon vs. 16 cores Barcelona. Both are trying to impress, wait for real benchmarks

It's a fair test that reveals AMDs Barcelona outperforms Intel while using less watts. Whether or not Barcelona will outperform Penryn remains to be seen but I will say, Penryn will be more expensive then Opteron.

In the current situation the people who can afford a Barcelona or a Penryn when they come out are the kind of people who can afford 1000 watt PSU's and the electrical bill that walk hand in hand with it. About the power, amd integrates the memory controller so the amd motherboard needs less power. They also don't need FB-Dimm ram, which on top of costing an arm and a leg, need more power.

intel and AMD measure TDP in different ways. intel measures the maximum power requirements in a lab environment and AMD measure the power required when all transistors are active (which will never happen irl). thats why the AMD system needs 50w less power to run.

I've had Intel based machines before and have enjoyed them. I'm fed up with Intel. I agree. The spec benchmarks are artificial and where probably OK 15 years ago. They simply contain loops of repeating mathematical operations that do NOT touch a lot of memory, beause it's supposed to be a CPU benchmark and not a memory speed meter.

Todays CPU's perform brannch prediction, out-of-order execution and some other neat stuff that was not possible 10 years ago.

Applying this to a tight loop of a small set of operations tells you nothing about your CPU speed.

I hope AMD does well so that we have two competing companies and no monopoly. However if you read all the reviews, benchmarks etc, the new AMD isn't as fast as the Intels right now. Even though I prefer Intel (for reasons), I want AMD to do well and not get into financial trouble etc. If Intel stays ahead, then we will always have high prices and Intel might get lazy and greedy. I hope not.
