  • Oh yes after days of practicing I'm now able to play this groove *__*

  • yes learned it on drumclass yesterday! :D

  • Skills!

  • man this groove is so legendary i love it

  • Comment removed

  • 1:15 scream. lol

  • Needs more cowbell :)

  • lmao look at his face when he says Flavour

  • I love that sound of that Snare. Perfectly tuned.

  • ... and I'm a Mormon.

  • I can do that...in my sleep...but i have to be asleep and dreaming.

  • way better slower

  • Try to compare it to Cobus! -.-"

  • @Xblade2187 No, Never.

  • When i listen i want say : OuHhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!

  • Show me those, who disliked this video. I will laugh at them as loud as I can.

  • @oskarveliky always gotta be some dumbasses tryin to get noticed? ha! and instead of laughin at em we can just enjoy the fact we aren't that stupid

  • I remember going from jam to jam with rodney in nyc.the jazz cultural theater, blue note.great times great music. I knew bac then hed be the shit. As another put it"he's a problem" lol wonderful rodney. Go get it!

  • I saw Rodney Holmes with Santana '98 and he played some crazy stuff together with bass player Benny R. They played RATM Bulls On Parade and it sounded better than original!!!

  • i just shat myself.

  • 4 people need to do it SLOWER!!

  • This is not the same holmes as the one with the horsecock right ?

  • Nice!! i actualy liked it better when he played it slower \m/

  • Needs more cowbells.

  • "so i came up with this" then my jaw dropped

  • finished his playing and a brick fell on somebody´s feet...

  • Christ on a crutch, this guy is a beast.

  • Does anyone know what type of kit that is? Starclassic performer? B/B ? Birch?

  • @javey1980 this is a maple starclassic ... now he's playing a B/B starclassic kit.

  • Not sure if this stood out for anyone else, but the tuning of the toms is the icing on the cake here... amazing drummer!

  • GEIL :-)

  • he sounds like michael jackson.

  • So i came up with th...*BOOOM*

  • whoopie goldberg plays drums?

  • "Do it slower!"

    "And count it!"

    Haha

  • its not difficult

  • ahoooow!

  • he is just one of the best around. I love the fact that he doesnt need MANY drums to sound BIG. Rodney is one to be commended as the chosen few drummers who has groove and taste

  • wtf..

  • That was hilarious^^

  • Amazin' ! Better slower though in my opinion.

  • what rudiments is he playing? it kinda looks like pudita's

  • @bruisedupunk paradiddle diddle and a triple paradiddle.

  • I agree, rudiments are important. All that clever sticking and those complex patterns advanced drummers play, whether on drums cymbals or cowbells, its all rudiment based.

  • it does sound better slower. nice groove tho.

  • what stupid teacher... he dosen't want show his paradiddle.

  • is that paradiddle?

  • @kuramnasmeh tons of mixed sticking... which is why learning rudiments becomes important.

  • awesome groove but imo i think it was better slower

  • HhAHAHA Do it slower!!! So awesome!

  • needs way more views!

  • Just got the transcription from Fran Merante's website.. watch his video his channel is funky2714

  • wow, this is unbelievable

  • u no why this groove sucks?

    NEEDS MORE COWBELL!!!!

    haha jk love this guy

  • NO MORE COWBELL!

  • So awesome!

  • anyone feel like charting this?

  • i doubt it

  • its here online somewhere .. i found it like a year ago and learnt it. sorry cant give u a link tho, just google

  • I have it charted

  • how do you guys recon his toms are tuned? Hes got ambassadors over his starclassics. Does it sound like this resos are slightly tuned tighter than his batters? or slightly tuned lower?

  • @etherealeyes the resos are a litle bit higher than his batters..

  • It needs to be played fast when you're showing off to your friends. It needs to be played slow when you're tryin' to sex up the ladies.

  • @loud08sti And people need to listen to actual drum'n'bass before sayin' its too fast.

  • Killer Drumming.....I have to learn that.

  • Good Luck man, really. ha ha

  • feeling is everything!

  • I think feelings mean really much in music, druming, but U must have good play technique, becouse only than U can correctly express ur feelings :)

  • not all the time, Phil Rudd can play a simple 4/4 rock beat better than anybody in the world, sometimes less is more

  • HOLLA!

  • he is so awesome...on the dvd he said he took lessons from frank malabe who is one of the best percussionists of all time...he wrote a book called afro cuban rhythms for drum set.....that is the best independence book to study in my opinion...anyways rodney is king

  • He's been a tremendous player for a long time.

  • fucking nice

  • shit! much slower please!!!

  • god i love this beat

  • troooppo ganzo!

  • which drumsticks does he use?

  • amazing

  • holy shit !!!!

  • he really can play and has a good sense of humor as well, very inspiring.

  • i think i have a new favorite drummer :O

  • really nice

  • OH MY GOD!!

  • BEAST!!

  • rlrrL rlrlrlrrl / rlrrL rlrlrlrrl

he does it @ 180bpm! fuckin fierce

  • does someone know which drum set hes playing ? And which ride cymbal ?

    Thanx

One of the sickest drumbeats ever btw

  • Comment removed

  • Is a Tama Starclassic Maple

    And the Ride is Zildjian K DARK ( I think ) 22"

  • great :D

  • hard to do it slower XDD

  • hahaha! some dude was like "count it!!'

  • ppe po pu

  • rlrrllrlrlrlrrllrlrrllrlrlrlrrll

  • sounds so much better slower

  • do it slower

  • cool...

  • 1:15 that "UUUUUUUHW" :D

  • he sounded like a bottle rocket lol

  • yeah thats funny lol

  • In this vid, he plays Zlidjian cymbals. But I know he plays AA Menil. I think he uses mostly the Byzance series of model, but I am not sure if that is true. Could some one tell me if that info is right.

  • i feel the same way ManniVel. But id like to have the trascription of this. Can anyone get it?

  • if you type in rodney holmes... the first LESSON video you come across has this guy who says about his website where you can find the transcription for it.. its awesome

  • it gets boring near the end when he plays it so much.. but the first time i heard it it was sick i was much impressed :D

  • NOW DO IT EVEN MORE SLOWER!

  • one heck of a sick sounding groove!!

  • it is simpler than it looks...what makes it so hip,is his use of dynamics and choice of sound sources!sticking is RLRR LLRL RLRL RRLL.now for the cats that cant read, the bass drum falls on the first note of the first 4-note group and on the 3rd note of the 3rd group.hihat plays quarter notes w/the foot which means it falls on every first note of every group.i think all of this makes sense.good luck with it and remember, you dont have to phrase it exactly the same with rodney,MAKE IT YOURS!!!!

  • Rlrrll Rlrrll rlrl

    rlRRll rlrrll rlrl

    (Captial R's being the toms)

i think you'll find it works better...

  • Thanks for the tip, that definitely sounds right.

The snare accent falls on the first of the two left diddles (LL). Another cool detail is the open hat play with the left hand on "3e". This groove just goes to show what can be done with creative use of paradiddles and co.

  • thats about as slow as he'll show that monster

    beat! great video.

  • What a fucking beast!!!!!!!

  • i could totally do that(with my lying face on)

  • ooo god!!¨the best!!

  • Too bad he cant do that among Santana...he's mad good!

  • For you drumset music readers, I'm offering the transcription of this on my site.

  • Awesome creativity...

  • heart heart

anyone reading this? msg meeH! wM

  • Yes!! That's it!

  • yeah love the groove

  • "Can you count it?!"

  • just so you all know this is not a latin groove. he originally used the ride cymbal. i saw his clinic today and he specifically said it wasnt latin, so dont let the cowbell decive you.

  • yeah it's not what you hit, it's what u play!

  • carajo que lleva ritmo en sangre

  • hey in :49 sound the voice of that guy fran merante???

  • Tremendo negrooo!!!!

A ver si de verlo se nos pega algo xD

  • a lo mejor lo negro nadamas.

  • jajaja muy buena xD

  • Mst be one of the best dum grooves ever performed but there is just one thing that it needs ..... hmmm... maybe More Cowbell??

  • its a bit more challenging and fun to play it on a 1 rack, 2 floor setup... somehting about the arm movement...

  • Rodney has been one of my favourite drummers since I first saw him playing with Santana on the Supernatural tour.

  • same here...he was amazing and i just had to know who he was..

  • what band is this guy from, hes incredible

  • Plays with Steve Kimock band, also toured with Santana (I think). Much more of an independent drummer though.

  • can you count this?

    haha

  • I think it sounds a lot better slower

    amazing in any case

  • when played slower it has more of a groove feel

when played fast its good for a solo within a song so i agree with you on your comment but either way, i sure want to learn to do that

  • ya , you're right ~~!!~~

  • i agree

  • Correction:

    w/o groove: E &

    w/ groove: & A

  • He is monster...

    I'm black monster!!!zzz

  • can anybody send me the pattern of this groove, please?

  • I don't think its written out yet, because its more of a fill then a drum beat. If you practice it slow and put in the accents for a basic funk groove with the snare on two and four then try and switch the snare accent to a songo pattern you should be able to get it.

  • So what wrong with what I typed?

  • Well, first of all you wrote that it's a fill more than a drum beat - witch is wrong . It is two patterns mixed together resulting in a groove .

Furthermore your weak explaination of how to play the groove is not very helpful for pianodrummer89 as he asks for a specific notation of the patterns .

  • Ok Ok calm-ah-down-ah the fill part was a personal perference..

  • I transcribed it if you'd like a copy.

It's weird that the tom line that he demonstrates without the groove isn't the same one he plays with the groove. The last two notes on tom 1 are displaced by a sixteenth note:

    w/ groove: E &

    w/o groove: & A

  • This is amazing!

  • dude!

  • anyone have any sheetmusic to this? im havin a hard time gettin it down...

  • One of the greatest licks In all of drumming.

  • this guys got it down..

    great drummer!!

  • ...Impossible...

  • It's not impossible mate, I managed to get it down (obviously not quite as well) after about 2 months of working on it for about 5 mins a day. Just break it down and get comfortable with all the parts first, before sticking them together.

The cowbell rhythmn is very, very fast though, still struggle with that. The hi hat also took me a while to get omfortable with. Worth learning it tho, it's great for showing off with!

  • took me about a day. but i have it down at about 150 bpm. i think his is around 180? possibly?

Anywho, it's a really fun groove to play one you get it clean, and get into the rythm of it ^_^

    thanks for posting :)

  • BEASTMAN!

  • unreal....i can only wonder how people come up with amazing grooves like that

  • Got to think of something ti put together and try it out. Nothing us normal drummers can do, so other set the standard for us lol.

  • this was at the modern drummer festival in 2005

i saw it already on my dvd i bought yesterday =)

you all have to watch the whole solo it's incredible

    he's my absolute favourite drummer

  • sweet beat

  • amazing!!! seen him at a drum clinic a couple of years ago

  • Interesting... hes got a K Custom ride and an A custom crash...

    but still an amazing groove!

  • i use the same 2 types of cymbals :D hybrids & A customs

  • holy crap...he's amazing. What sick beat. I like it better slow

  • thats what she said

  • lol

  • this groove is becoming quite famous. he talks about its reputation on his website...
