It is not that difficult. Start with simple paradiddle on snare: RLRRLLRLRLRRLL x 2 with regular hi-hat beat 1 3. The tom accents for the right hand are capital here: RlrrllRlrlrrll rlRRllrlrlrrll, the left hand accents on snare are like this (hi-hat hit between spaces) : rlrrLlrlr l rrLl rlrrLlrlrlrrLl than just add base drumm on every 1st and 11th note of each section. Than just work on the feeling and speed:)
I remember going from jam to jam with rodney in nyc.the jazz cultural theater, blue note.great times great music. I knew bac then hed be the shit. As another put it"he's a problem" lol wonderful rodney. Go get it!
I saw Rodney Holmes with Santana '98 and he played some crazy stuff together with bass player Benny R. They played RATM Bulls On Parade and it sounded better than original!!!
he is just one of the best around. I love the fact that he doesnt need MANY drums to sound BIG. Rodney is one to be commended as the chosen few drummers who has groove and taste
I agree, rudiments are important. All that clever sticking and those complex patterns advanced drummers play, whether on drums cymbals or cowbells, its all rudiment based.
how do you guys recon his toms are tuned? Hes got ambassadors over his starclassics. Does it sound like this resos are slightly tuned tighter than his batters? or slightly tuned lower?
he is so awesome...on the dvd he said he took lessons from frank malabe who is one of the best percussionists of all time...he wrote a book called afro cuban rhythms for drum set.....that is the best independence book to study in my opinion...anyways rodney is king
In this vid, he plays Zlidjian cymbals. But I know he plays AA Menil. I think he uses mostly the Byzance series of model, but I am not sure if that is true. Could some one tell me if that info is right.
if you type in rodney holmes... the first LESSON video you come across has this guy who says about his website where you can find the transcription for it.. its awesome
it is simpler than it looks...what makes it so hip,is his use of dynamics and choice of sound sources!sticking is RLRR LLRL RLRL RRLL.now for the cats that cant read, the bass drum falls on the first note of the first 4-note group and on the 3rd note of the 3rd group.hihat plays quarter notes w/the foot which means it falls on every first note of every group.i think all of this makes sense.good luck with it and remember, you dont have to phrase it exactly the same with rodney,MAKE IT YOURS!!!!
The snare accent falls on the first of the two left diddles (LL). Another cool detail is the open hat play with the left hand on "3e". This groove just goes to show what can be done with creative use of paradiddles and co.
just so you all know this is not a latin groove. he originally used the ride cymbal. i saw his clinic today and he specifically said it wasnt latin, so dont let the cowbell decive you.
I don't think its written out yet, because its more of a fill then a drum beat. If you practice it slow and put in the accents for a basic funk groove with the snare on two and four then try and switch the snare accent to a songo pattern you should be able to get it.

Furthermore your weak explaination of how to play the groove is not very helpful for pianodrummer89 as he asks for a specific notation of the patterns .
It's weird that the tom line that he demonstrates without the groove isn't the same one he plays with the groove. The last two notes on tom 1 are displaced by a sixteenth note:
It's not impossible mate, I managed to get it down (obviously not quite as well) after about 2 months of working on it for about 5 mins a day. Just break it down and get comfortable with all the parts first, before sticking them together.
The cowbell rhythmn is very, very fast though, still struggle with that. The hi hat also took me a while to get omfortable with. Worth learning it tho, it's great for showing off with!
