1) It's not "Abbey 12", it's "Abt 12". Abt is for Abbot, which is the leader of a monastery. Abt, or Abbot, is titled to quadruples (or highest beer) because it was brewed for the Abbot of the brewery/monastery.
2) That Abt 12 is on the lees... so pouring out the last drop and getting yeast in it isn't desired. That's why there's "floaters" in there.
3) Your buddy obviously can pour a beer better than you. You want a tall head to kickup the aromatics and protect the beer from oxidation.
I just had it last night. My new favorite beer EVER. I like a bit of a head on it too, but like you, I like the sediment. I pour all of it in and I thought the little floaters and such were real sexy. I didn't pair mine with anything, but I'm sure cheese would go really nicely with it. This stuff is almost $5 a bottle, but I really want to go and stockpile it. Cheers!
hey guys its been a while. glad to see another review. you guys always get very interesting beers. love the cheese pairing. did i hear a smoke detector keep beeping in the background... time to change the battery. hahahah
Hey Damas, this is Chris (tehankh) from the share-a-beer.
I brought this brew up to you last week, and I just had this beer tonight at the share-a-beer with some French (smuggled, unpasteurized) brie cheese and had the same exact reaction.
I also had some prosciutto with the brie on a french baguette.
This beer is only rivaled by the original makers of the recipe, the monks of the Saint Sixtus monestary in Westvleteren, Belgium. That beer being Westvleteren 12.
Yea, you should have some pretty good ones available in your area. I have to put in a little travel time to get them. I have found that the American ones of the style are hit and miss though so be carefull.
I think I need to get me some of that. It sounds delicious, especially with the cheese. I'm starting to drink a few Belgian beers and am liking them a lot.
I have watched the ones with food pairings but never really done one. When Ben offered this combo I could not resist. My mouth was full, sorry I usually am full of words.
makes for an awesome review. Alls that is missing is the current temperature of Brussels. Unfortunately they don't carry this beer at bevmo. They do have the St Bernardus
If you can't find it, let me know, I could FedEx you some.
The only one I haven't had is the Pater 6, which if I'm not mistaken is the weakest of the bunch. It's not that I don't want to try it, but it only comes in 12 ounce bottles around here, and those 12 ounce bottles are around 5 or 6 bucks.
Call me crazy, but for the most part I try not to spend more than 2 or 3 bucks per 12 ounces on anything that's not gonna get me drunk after 3 beers, lambics excluded.
Gary just remember its kinda sweet. This rating is given in comparrison to others in the style. Out of 1367 reviews on BeerAdvocate it got an A and on RateBeer out of 1954 reviews it got a 100. It is worth a try.
I really love beer and cheese together. I'd love to try the Chimay cheeses, they sound brilliant. This is a great beer too, very similar to Westvletern 12 (I think they even use the same yeast, but I'm not certain) just cheaper and easily available.
Just had this last night at world of beer...no complaints. Now lets talk about that epic BEARD! Damn!

I used to be a Gormet Cheese manager at a very high end grocery store, never saw that cheese before!

haha, I had this exact same reaction to the St Bernardus Abt 12. This is by far the best Belgian ale I've ever had.

@heatx You might like the Rochefort 6, 8, and 10 as well.

Wow Belgium beer and Belgium cheese
makes for an awesome review. Alls that is missing is the current temperature of Brussels. Unfortunately they don't carry this beer at bevmo. They do have the St Bernardus
Tripel, which gets an A and A- on beer
advocate. So I'll try that and the cheese if I
can find it.
thomast0729 2 years ago
The St Bernardus Tripel is very good also, I have not been let down by this brewer. The Watou Tripel is the next one I am going to try and get.

The Watou Tripel is tasty too!

The beer is great. Since we did this review I have had it on draft and its has more of an alcohol bite and I liked it a little more.
