I'm only now discovering Houston Person and I am amazed that I haven't heard his name in jazz circles. That's probably more about me than it is about Mr. Person.
I went to grade school with Eric Person, his son. Eric brought his alto to 6th grade camp and I remember thinking it was sort of nerdy. Now he's a giant in his own right. Talk about revenge of the nerds...
Darwin? These guys are creating, not dissolving. Thank God. He's the one giving the rewards long after we stop playing down here on the ground. Good thing to have eternity to play to an audience of One. A bunch of family and friends might well dig joining in.
Oh, The 5 Spot!!! I remember it well, and miss it. Saw Jimmy McGriff there and George Benson stopped in, sang "Masquerade." Paul Shaeffer in the audience. Magical. Wish I'd seen this performance. Lovely.

The exceptional and elegant tune of this piece, with the marvelous and superb performance of Houston Person, are just out of this world.

If there is a better combination than a tenor sax, a Hammond B3, guitar, bass, & drums...I don't know what it is. Absolutely great!!!
edjudie 1 year ago
@edjudie Agreed. Tenor sax and Hammond B3 go together like sunshine and blue sky.

Yes, whoever invented ears ought to be rewarded. Was it Darwin?
Either way, Houston uses his pair very well.
