@jwallbanger yes their information is wrong, although the man taking care of it was right. Not all Agaves make tequila and it usually doesn't take them 50 years to bloom. They also are NOT all native to Mexico there are a lot that are native to Arizona and the southwest.
The stalks are used to make Didgeridoos(an Australian flute instrument) so it can live on. The natives of Mexico used the agave to make pens, nails and needles, as well as string to sew and make weavings.
dont be stupid that is not agave . is a maguey, and we make pulque out of maguey, no tequila. and that thing that came out of the maguey (flower) we call it quiote . why you guys dont search before , and that way dont look stupid.
I wonder what species that was... It looked like Agave americana or perhaps a cross between A. americana and A. expansa because they grow HUGE and that was a gorgeous flower stalk :D Great people to let it flower through the roof! I would have done the same :D
@alandon I never saw the plant. They kept showing a small one. It might be A. americana but it might have been another species. A.deserti for instance can get bloom stalks to almost 30 feet tall and are much smaller plants.
aww thats what happing to my grandmas plant its over 20 years old its massive too, anyone know if u can still make tequila out of it now, i didnt know what the hell it was coes i live in australia.
@WIEIED probably not. I believe that the species they make tequila out of they chop the bloom spikes off and they can survive it.. but I am not expert.

I may be wrong, but... There is a way to keep those plant alive, however, its too late now, they COULD HAVE cut off the flowering stalk as soon as it began. Thats what agave farmers do to extend the life.
@hrbear that is wrong. it might or might not make pups(clones of the plant) some species if the flowers aren't polinated will create bublils which are little clones of the mother plant.
@guest2424 not always. Most of the time in the desert once it starts the blooming process it's better to let it go, because the plant stores all the sugars and starches to create the bloom stalk. Cutting it off won't keep the plant from dying.

This plant can be used as an agave nectar as a natural sugar substitute. Organic Agave Nectar is available for sale online.
