thunderthumb59 I couldn't agree more with you, the good old days of free-form music before the suits forced disco down everyone's throats. EWF back then defied categorization; they were rock, jazz, fusion, & r&b.
@failedassassin -- in america, the mainstream radio of late 70s, and mtv thereafter, did not expose anything that was stimulating to imagination or intellect- they were extremely narrow minded and predictable, playing the $ame formula $ell-out things over and over, they cheapified culture and reduced the potential of all the artistic movements, this chain-reaction is why american music culture on the surface has been so horribly bleak since the late 70s, although underground great music strives
Whether or not you are into jazz, tell me how many popular groups in the last 30 years could even do a song like this? I have seen some people describe EWF as a "disco" act. What a joke. They could do just about anything.
@failedassassin well the record companies are resposible to b/c they are demanding bad music from the artist. it is all about money these days and bad music is really getting shoved down people throats now
Don'tcha just love this kind of music? So unique, so brave, so refreshing. You can cover almost any other artist (including the beatles, rolling stones, even stevie), but you can't cover Earth, Wind & Fire. You can only "sample" their music. There IS a difference.
You must be young or not a jazz fan, dude. You're right, people have a right to listen whatever they want to and I am not angry for people 'demanding' bad music when it comes to real good music, people in Europe have a more appreciation for the art than people over here. Think about it, who's really backwards here?
Dear listeners, behind this tune are the machinations of Eddie Harris & Charles Stepney. True music visionaries who deserve more investigation. Go check em out. They are giants.
i wish ewf did more interludes like these on each suceeding lp they put out, and and play the hell out of them live. they were easily capable of it anyway.
Your statement appears to be blaming or putting down EWF. But - the time this album came out "was when artists were allowed to express their artistic freedom until record companies decided to change that getting greedy. The same thing happened to Kool & The Gang, Genesis & others. And that's sad."

Ironic! Capitalists will say the Communist are against artistic freedom! Yet the same is true for Capitalists be it for different reasons! I guess if you travel far enough in one direction you eventually get back to where you started.
The versatility shown by these brothers will never again be duplicated. There was a time when our people reproduced ourselves, i.e. The Temptations, Four Tops, The Dramatics, etc, but no longer. However, I'm grateful for what we've left for generations to come like the sphinx in Giza! Salaam!
I think it reminds me more of 'Countdown' when Trane has his intro for about 15-20 bars, then McCoy Tyner sneaks with the rest of the rhythm section, he plays that melody and its over
@ricisrock I guess that the changes are quite similar to Giant Steps, you can hear those II-V-Is with the I for a whole bar, whereas the changes of Countdown have a higher density. Thats my opinion.
But I agree with you, when I hear the melody, which is kind of countdownish (or Tune-up-ish). I would love to hear McCoy playing Countdown with Trane, but on the record it is Tommy Flanagan on Piano.
Unfortunately the video is blocked for my region..
wish they had made this cut alot longer

@klwewf This is true. There is a lot behind the hit "Let's Groove" also. Columbia wanted a hit record fast and they just went in and recorded it.
