Your one story about e.coli nearly killing you is terrible but I and my family have been drinking it for 8 yrs now. Perhaps you had or still have very low stomach acid. 80% of americans do. Without proper stomach pH, you are susceptible to any virus, parasite or bacteria that comes along. With a proper stomach acidity, most of those organisms become food for you as they are protein based. They don't stand a chance once ingested by a healthy person. We have to weigh the pros and cons and decide.
92 cases.... yes but what percentage is that of the people who drink it? And how many more minor cases never even make it on to the public Health deptartment's radar? As someone who was nearly KILLED, hospitalized for over a month, a year recovery and now has a body inside and out that is permanently SCARRED and DAMAGED from the e.coli I got from RAW MILK from a LOCAL dairy... sorry but I think the risks are just too great... there are other ways of obtaining the SAME benefits without the RISK.
There are risks with drinking raw milk. There are also risks with drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes, but those are legal and people have a choice on whether or not to drink whiskey and smoke. As Americans, we should have the right to raw milk and pasteurized milk, each one has it's own set of risks.
Yes you should. You should have the right to drink it if you have weighed the risks and still so choose.
BUT, unsuspecting people shopping in grocery stores should also have the right to know that their food is safe. AND people who have heard only all the exaggerations about how raw milk is THE magical elixir should also have the right to HEAR the other side of the story BEFORE learning the hard way... and spending (or watching their kid spend) months in a hospital fighting for their LIFE.
Truth be told, many of these kids consume raw milk and prefer it. The key is obtaining raw milk from pasture-based dairies (not producers for conventional pasteurized milk that feed mostly grain to the cattle). Pasteurization destroys most nutrients available in raw milk (believe it or not, there are even folks who advocate pasteurizing breast milk . . . milk from herbivores likes cows, goats, sheep has been consumed for eons by humans).
Foodborne illness can occur from any food; surprisingly (though not really), the incidence of illness from dairy is low and from raw dairy even lower. There are an estimated 76 million cases of foodborne illness annually in the US--compared to 92 cases over a two-year period cited by murdocha is hardly cause for alarm. Know your farmer, know your food sources. Learn more and take responsiblity for your health--don't rely on slick marketing to dictate your choices.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Academy of Family Physicians, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, and many other health organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding (e.g. raw milk) for the first 6 months of life.
Breastfeeding and drinking unpasturized cows milk are two VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. A human mother's poop does not come out a matter of inches from where her infant is feeding..... it also does not pass by her breasts on the way to the ground.... she also does not sleep with her breasts on the same ground where her poop fell... need I go on?
No, the parents want raw milk and are using their children. This is awful and pathetic. Do we again have to point out the pathogenicity of raw milk? Campylobacteriosis, Bovine tuberculosis, Salmonellosis, Listeriosis?
I would bet even money these are the same parents protesting H1N1 vaccinations feeling sanctimonious about raw milk.
2005-2007 92 cases of illness all from consumption of raw milk.
these people should be ashamed of themselves.. wait till a few of them are at the hospital looking at their precious kids hooked up to a dialysis machine from an e.coli infection

Choose your risks, short-term immune-building or long-term chronic immune-suppressing.

these parents saw their kids being really ill, and then saw them recovering from diseases like autism with raw milk. I am one of them!

Kudos to you. Many people recover their health with raw milk and raw butter.
