i'm gonna go ahead and disagree with julian here.
in the beginning he schools the student to add a ton of expressive tempo tugs when bach, a medieval composer, didn't write a ton of tempo changes into his compositions. it's okay when they're added, i actually prefer it, but a bach piece done period should basically be done to a metronome.
but then.... he tells her at the end that her six-note chord isn't faithful to the four-voice fugal structure! well, jules, that's just another romantic-era
you mean with the last chord? romantic style is largely about embellishment and she embellished the final chord by taking it out of the four-voice structure and just playing a full six-string chord. made sense to me. and i'm not sure how much "common sense" is gonna help in playing this type of classical music. i'm not even sure exactly what that means.
Man, Bach was Baroque, not medieval!! There are like a few CENTURIES of difference between them...no t to mention the endelss stylistic differences... well just that, I just couldn stand reading that Bach was medieval and not saying anything about it
hooray for you! i still say this julian bream character comes off as an overbearing jackass in this video, and i certainly haven't seen anything in the comments section to lead me to believe that his adherents are any better.
classical music is one thing. the people who play it are something else.
@highway234 He seems like an asshole but obviously no one is going to play it the exact same way that he does. When I watch these masterclasses, I wonder how good his ear must be. He does come off as "my way is right and anything else is wrong though" but he's the greatest
yeah, not to take anything away from his playing, i just think his approach as a teacher leaves a lot to be desired. course i guess it's hard to judge from such a short sample and anyway the way these classes are set up it's kinda hard for anyone to really shine.
i kinda like getting six thumbs down though, lol. usually it takes politics or religion to get people that worked up. :D
A large part of being a classical musician is knowing the ropes of hard core criticism early on. Like almost personal criticism. Especially from better players. Like as long as they remain critical, in regards to the playing, it's actually better for the intensity of the criticism to increase than it is for them to say "oh you played it great now let's have the next player".
Bream, my favourite classical guitarist after Segovia, and my favourite "character" in the CG world! I'm damn proud to be from the same country as him!
I don't feel like it has enough weight.
Ah, but the music has.

@dinosaurcaptain its called J.S Bach-Violin Sonata fugue BWV 1001
Kaneelkussentje 2 years ago
Close, but this is the BWV 1000 for lute (Bach's own transcription of the BWV 1001 in G minor from violin to the lute).

... reinterpretation!
i'd say to the student, either dismiss the first bit of advice, or the second. play it medieval or romantic, but don't mix the two.
then again, i mostly play AC/DC, so....

the fugal structure comment applies whether or not your playing periodically or romantically, its just common sense

yeah sorry, baroque, that's what i meant. i'm always getting those two mixed up.

Bach was not a medieval composer. That is the funniest thing i read on youtube all day. And that is saying something.

Imagine a master class with Bream! I'd be somewhere between sheer delight, hero worship, utter unworthiness and downright shiting myself.
